Family and true friends will never judge the state of your home, but if you want to put your best foot forward, here are nine areas of your home to prioritise before guests arrive. And if you’re feeling energised after these items are ticked off your to-do list, try fake-cleaning your house in 15-minutes, or cleaning your entire home in less than an hour.

1. Smell

People often become immune to the smell of their own home, but it’s the first thing your guests will notice. Before they arrive make your home smell fresh and clean by opening up the windows and allowing fresh air to circulate, empty rubbish bins, light some candles, run an air purifier (if you have one) or boil some water with orange or lemon peels.

2. Entryway

The first place your guests will land is the entryway. Entryways are prone to clutter, becoming a dumping ground for shoes, bags, jackets and papers from the letterbox. Do a clean sweep of the area before your guests arrive to ensure they feel welcomed and calm, rather than overwhelmed and stressed by a chaotic entrance.

3. Kitchen

When family and friends come over, everyone tends to congregate in the kitchen – so make sure it’s clean! Our kitchen cleaning checklist will ensure everything is in order before your guests arrive. At a minimum, put away clutter, wipe down the counters and ensure dishes are washed and stored away.

4. Bathroom

A clean bathroom is a must when expecting house guests. Wipe down the sink, vanity, and bathroom mirror. Clean and disinfect the toilet. Ensure the shower screen is free from grime and don’t forget to put in a fresh hand towel. Top up the hand soap, make sure there are extra toilet rolls within easy reach and make sure there’s air freshener available too.

5. Chaotic fridge or pantry

There are two types of hosts: those that wait hand and foot on their guests, and those who expect guests to treat the house as their own, welcome to take whatever they want from the fridge or pantry. If you fall into the latter camp, do your best to keep the fridge and pantry organised so snacks and drinks can be found quickly. 

6. Coffee cups

One thing you’re guaranteed to offer your guests is a drink. Your guests will handle their cup fairly closely, so things like coffee or tea stains in the mug, fibres from a lint-y tea towel on a glass or even lipstick marks that the dishwasher just didn’t quite tackle, will be noticed. Same goes for cutlery and crockery if you’re hosting a dinner party. Somewhere convenient to set their cup down while seated in the living room is also something your guests will appreciate.

7. Dust and pet dander

Even if your home looks fairly clean, if there’s dust and pet hair around, guests with sensitive noses will notice (and their sneezes will be a dead giveaway). Don’t be so hard on yourself to make every nook and cranny immaculate, and if your house is less than perfect, guess what? It’ll probably make your guests feel more comfortable about their own less-than-perfect home!

Vacuum cleaners, microwaves, ovens, rangehood filters and dishwashers often undergo heavy and often daily use, so showing them some love will help ensure they run smoothly and help prolong their life span.

Colin Jones, Appliance Category Expert at Appliances Online, says, “Spring is a great time for cleaning the home, however many households tend to forget their home appliances in their spring cleaning routine.

“There are some simple tricks and tips to help maintain and prolong the life of your home appliances, particularly those that we use regularly.

“With the use of some everyday household items, your appliances can be cleaned to look and smell like new again, bringing them back to life and ensuring they continue to run efficiently.”

How to clean your oven

This step-by-step guide to cleaning your oven will leave it looking shiny and new again without having to use oven cleaners.

Mix ½ cup baking soda with water until it is a spreadable paste-like consistency.

Using a brush, smear the entire inside of your oven and oven door, and leave it overnight (trick: you can also use this to clean your oven racks and trays).

In a spray bottle, mix a combination of vinegar and water and spray the inside of the oven, using a damp cloth to remove the residue. Some harder to remove bits may require a scraper to remove entirely.

Don’t forget to clean the grimy oven window, while you’re at it!

How to clean your microwave

Your microwave may develop a bad food smell from overuse throughout the year and it is a good idea to include it in your spring cleaning.

To clean your microwave, place 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with some freshly squeezed lemon juice in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 5 minutes. Remove the bowl and use a clean cloth to wipe the surfaces down.

Don’t forget to wipe down the microwave door.

How to clean your range hood filters

Range hood filters are a key part to your range hood and should be kept clean in order for your range hood to work properly.

Remove the filters and place them in the sink with a combination of hot water, detergent and ¼ cup of baking soda.

Leave them to soak for 15-20 minutes, if they are extremely dirty you may need to scrub them with a dish brush or scourer.

Once done, place the filters into your dishwasher on the hottest temperature (this will flush out built-up grease in between the filters).

Once the cycle has finished, take the filters out and leave to dry completely before placing back into your rangehood.

How to clean your dishwasher

Clean your dishwasher filters and eliminate odours for better wash results.

Place a cup of white vinegar in the top rack of your dishwasher, or pour directly into the dishwasher drain and run a short cycle. This will loosen trapped food particles causing the odours, giving you a fresher smell-free dishwasher.

Remove filters and soak them in warm water for 10 minutes. Give them a good rinse under hot running water and place back in your dishwasher. Throw ½ cup of baking soda down the drain hole as well to freshen it up.

Remove the spray arms and check there are no food particles blocking the spray jets. You can use a wire to clean out the holes of any hard deposits that can prevent them from working properly.

How to clean your vacuum cleaner

To ensure your vacuum continues to run smoothly, the filters should be cleaned regularly at least once every three months.

Open up your vacuum, remove the filter and tap it against a hard surface to shake off loose dust. Using a dry brush, gently remove the remaining dust. Ensure this is done outdoors so the dust doesn’t end up back inside!

Any fine dust remaining can be rinsed under a cold tap, hold the filter under the running water until it runs clear (be sure to check for electrical components or attachments before rinsing in water).

Leave to dry in direct sunlight, and ensure the filter is completely dry before placing it back in the vacuum.

At the same time, give your vacuum’s dust container a good rinse of any residual dust and grime, remembering to let it dry completely before reassembling.

The need for a good spring clean is inevitable each year but an entire spring cleaning list can seem overwhelming at first. We have a handful of tips and tricks to get your spring cleaning started.

1. Freshen up your bedroom

Spring’s arrival is the perfect opportunity to refresh your bedroom.

• Open up the windows and let some fresh air in
• Swap out your heavy winter doona for your lighter one
• Add spring colour to your bed by bringing out your colourful linens and cushions
• If you have extra time, rearrange your bedroom furniture and use the chance to vaccum underneath

2. Style a vignette in your kitchen island

Start with the busiest room in the house and one you return to time and again each day to act as a touch point to reinvigorate your resolve with each visit.

• Clear off your kitchen island or a central point in your kitchen and remove any clutter collected there
• Give the surface a thorough wipe down for a blank canvass to work with
• Create a vignette from a selection of your favourite objects
• Add an indoor plant or bunch of fresh flowers to finish the display

3. Clear the clutter and place a plant at your front door

With a welcoming entrance you’ll want to continue the theme indoors and it will spark your spring cleaning resolution anew each time you enter your home.

• Clear away shoes, umbrellas, recycling and clutter from your verandah, vestibule, or front door
• Sweep and wash down the flooring for a blank canvas to work with
• Buy new or bring from elsewhere a large pot or a group of smaller potted plants to create a lush display

4. Clear off your dining table

Who doesn’t experience the detritus of the days of the week collected together onto the dining surface, threatening it to disappear from view? A clean sweep is in order!

• Clear away flotsam and jetsam from homework, craft, reading matter and meals from your dining table
• Give the surface a little love with a clean and polish
• Place a decorative item in the centre of your table to establish a focal point and demarcate it as a “no junk” zone!

Are vacuum mop combos worth it?

Vacuum mop combos are designed to bring the best of both worlds together. From saving you time to freeing up storage space, you’ll find that with a wet and dry vacuum mop, you no longer need to juggle multiple tasks and devices. My honest robot vacuum mop review

When it comes to having clean floors, I’ve always been strictly a mop twice with boiling water, detergent and methylated spirits kind of gal. But as a working mum with a crawling toddler on the loose, a never-ending pile of laundry to deal with and messy meal times to stay on top of, cleaning the floor required time and energy I just did not have. Also, having wet tiled floors was a pretty big slip hazard for my little one who just loves to explore. I’d been contemplating investing in a robotic vacuum mop for a while, but was still not convinced it would be worth the investment. 

I reached out to Ecovacs for help and they sent me a DEEBOT x1 Plus, a premium robotic vacuum mop that came with two cartridges (one for vacuuming and air-freshening, another for vacuuming and mopping), a cleaning brush and an auto-empty station. It took me an afternoon to set it up but once that was done I started the machine and it set straight to work mapping my home, vacuuming as it went. 

Once the robot had perfected the map of my home and detected all of the rugs, it was time to test out the mopping function. All I had to do was fill the tank with distilled water, install the mop pad, hit power and off it went. I recommend following the instruction manual which says to soak the mop pad with water first (something I decided to skip) for a more thorough clean. It automatically mopped around the rugs!

Do robotic vacuum mops really mop properly?

As the machine only uses cold water, I would describe the mopping function as more akin to dusting with a damp cloth than a traditional mop and bucket. It’s certainly not a deep clean, but it will keep dust and minor messes at bay in between proper mops.

The cleaning power of some robotic vacuum mops can be enhanced with the use of a specially formulated robotic mop cleaning solution, while other brands warn against using detergents of any kind. I have to admit I was tempted to add a splash of white vinegar to the water tank and a drop of essential oil and diswashing liquid to the mop pad, but doing so is not recommended as it could cause corrosion in the machine over time. 

Despite this, I was impressed by how clean the floors felt underfoot after Alfred had done his thing. While the oscillating function was quite effective at buffing away light stains, I wouldn’t recommend using it for large spills or heavy-duty cleaning. 

Do robot vacuums really vacuum properly? 

The vacuuming function works really well – the robot’s low profile design made easy work of cleaning under the table, the lounge, beds and other furniture. But does it do the job as well as you would yourself? Well, that’s subjective. 

A deep clean where you raise a sweat, delving into every nook and cranny and lift and furniture and objects would get a better result but the point is that with regular, automated cleans, the need for a deep clean is not only less often, it’s so much easier to tackle specific areas because everywhere else is, well, clean!

Using voice commands 

Unlike more affordable robot vacuum and mops on the market, The Deebot x1 Plus has its own built-in voice command assistant. Simply say ‘Ok Yiko’ and you can direct it to start cleaning, pause cleaning straight out of the box. This is great if you don’t have many smart home appliances.

If you’d prefer to incorporate the Deebot into an existing smart home ecosystem (such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home, for example) you can do that too. I was able to personalise the vacuum’s nickname (I went with ‘Alfred’) and after making a couple of taps in my Google Home app, the Deebot now responds to commands such as ‘Hey Google, tell Afred to return to the charger’ and away the vacuum goes. 

What are the pros of a robot vacuum and mop? 

Vacuum mops are handy devices that are well worth the money if maintaining a clean floor currently feels unmanageable.  

• Some models vacuum and mop at the same time, making the task quicker and easier.
• Once you’ve downloaded the app to your smartphone, you can set an automatic cleaning schedule. So you can set it to clean while you’re asleep, while you’re at work, or just before guests arrive.
• Advanced models may come with a docking station that empties the dust canister automatically. Top of the range models even have a water refill station. 
• The DEEBOT has a ‘Home Patrol’ function which sends the machine off on a reconnaissance of your entire home. Very handy for keeping an eye on pets while you’re out or seeing what’s under the sofa without having to get down on all fours.

What are the cons of a robotic vacuum mop?

• You know how you do a quick clean up before a cleaner arrives? You have to do the same thing for a robot vacuum mop. Spend 5-minutes to make sure there are no cords lying around and lift anything off the floor that shouldn’t be there. In saying this, you’ll soon make a habit of not leaving things on the ground, which is actually kind of a pro.
• Advanced models can easily traverse minor changes in floor height, but if you live in a house that has flooring at significantly different heights (such as an older home with an extension you access via stairs or a step), you may have to manually pick up the robotic vacuum to get the entire area clean. This might be more trouble than it’s worth. Similarly, if you live in a two-storey home, you will have to lift the robotic vacuum upstairs. 
• The mopping function is great for in-between cleans, but won’t replace a traditional mop and bucket. Depending on the model you buy, the mop pad may beed to be removed, cleaned and dried after each use to prevent mildew. The Ecovacs DEEBOT x1 Omni and Dreame W10 Self Cleaning robot vacuum and mop are an exception to this rule, as it rinses and dries the mop pads automatically after each clean.
• More affordable options will have to be manually emptied and refilled, which can be annoying if your machine aborts mission mid-clean because of an empty water tank or full dustbin.
• Be warned: kids and pets may (initially) be terrified of the robot! You can get around this by scheduling the machine to run while you’re asleep or while you’re out of the house.

My hacks for getting the most out of a robot vacuum and mop

Personalise the clean: Everything about the way the Deebot cleans can be tailored to your specifications. I like to set the water flow level to ‘high’, vacuum power to ‘max’ and have set it to clean every area twice. 

doing this, but I did end up putting a drop of dishwashing liquid and essential oil directly onto the mop pad. I feel like it makes the floors come up so much nicer and leaves my whole house smelling clean and fresh. 

Carry it upstairs: I’m not sure why, but I was initially nervous to give the robot free reign upstairs. Now that I’ve tried it, I regret not doing it sooner. I live in a two-storey house, and while carrying the robot upstairs is kind of inconvenient, it sure beats lugging a steaming mop bucket up there (and back down again). The robot is excellent at getting rid of dust bunnies under beds and low furniture (it saves my back, too!). I have a baby gate installed at the top of the stairs, so this prevents the Deebot falling while cleaning. If you don’t have a gate, you can place a temporary boundary in front of the stairs the first time the Deebot cleans (it will map as it goes) and then adjust the map in the phone app to set a virtual boundary for subsequent cleans.

Get multiple reusable mop pads: One thing that might hold you back from using your robot more often is not having multiple mop pads. Invest in a bunch of mop pads from the get-go and you’ll be able to run the mop more frequently and even change out the pad for different rooms so the mop doesn’t use the same pad in the bathroom and then starting cleaning the living room (it just seems a bit unhygienic). You can also program the robot to clean the bathroom and laundry last, if that’s what you prefer.

The verdict

Does the robot replace my trusty stick vacuum and mop and bucket? Not entirely. But, I’ve been living with the Deebot for a few months now and can confidently say that I hardly ever reach for them anymore. Now that the robotic vacuum cleaner takes care of the floors, my entire house is so much cleaner. 

My cleaning schedule now looks like an hour or two on the weekends tidying up, scrubbing down the bathroom, dusting surfaces and reorganising my home while the floors pretty much take care of themselves.

Having a robotic vacuum mop is kind of like outsourcing the chore to a teenager, only better. It doesn’t talk back, does a way better cleaning job and you can call out or tap a quick message into your phone to have the whole house vacuumed on demand. No questions asked. You’ll still need to deep clean every now and again, but the task is so much easier as daily dust and grime never gets the chance to build up. 

While cheaper models will get the job done, if you want a truly hands-free experience (which is the whole point of getting a robot), I recommend spending that little bit extra for a machine that can empty its own dust compartment, refill the water tank and clean the mop pads automatically. 

In the end, I’m so grateful to have Alfred taking care of the floors in my home. There’s nothing like coming home to clean, dust-free tiles without having to lift a finger. Now, when I leave my house, I try to make a habit of picking up any clutter off the floor so Alfred can have free reign while I’m away.

Since the onslaught of floods in Sydney and along the east coast a few years ago, HB stylist Lucy Gough had no fewer than 26 industrial-sized units in her house post to remove accumulated water in the walls, floors and furnishings. As her son lives with some respiratory issues, Lucy now swears by her home dehumidifier. “We use it once a week in each room – bedrooms, kids’ room and living spaces,” she says. After running it for four hours, the reservoir collects around a litre of water from the air in each room – though Lucy’s machine is capable of removing up to 16 litres of moisture in just 24 hours.

“Compressor dehumidifiers, also known as refrigerant dehumidifiers, draw air in, cool it to condense water into a water tank, reheat it, then expel the warmer air back into the room. This makes them ideal for warmer areas,” says Colin. 

Desiccant dehumidifiers, on the other hand, “use a wheel to absorb moisture from the humid air, while an internal heater heats the damp sections to condense the water into a tank. Since they don’t utilise a compressor, desiccant dehumidifiers often have a lower noise level when compared to other models.

1. Start with a clean sweep
Remove everything – yes everything!! If it’s a hot day, keep an Esky or cooler on hand to store perishable items like dairy and meats while you work.

2. Wipe it all down
Clean every surface—walls, drawers, shelves and door compartments—with warm soapy water. Don’t forget the little nooks and covered sections. Let everything air dry or finish with a soft, clean cloth before returning items.

3. Take stock

If the skirting boards are covered in a light layer of recently acquired dust, the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner may do the trick.

2. Dust while you mop

The key to all stain removal is to avoid putting the item in the “too hard” basket to launder with care when you have more time. Different types of stains require different treatment but, no matter the type of stain, what’s best is to address the stain quickly. The other important tip is to first treat a non-oily stain with cold water, rather than hot which may ‘set’ the stain into the fibres of the fabric.

Here are tried and tested methods for seven of the most common stains.

1. Makeup stains

The downside of a fabulous concealer that lasts all day is when your favourite white blouse wears it too. Collars, necklines and drips can all be refreshed by:

• Putting dishwashing liquid straight onto the stain and gently rubbing with a little water on a damp cloth or your fingers.
• Rinse in cool water and repeat the process, then rinse with hot water.
• If you’re in a rush in the bathroom, another good trick is to use micellar water or shaving cream with the same method.

2. Oil stains

Greasy tell-tale marks down the front of clothing sometimes seem impossible to move, and shadows of an oil stain may stubbornly reappear wash after wash.

• Apply dishwashing liquid directly to saturate the stain and allow to sit
• Gently rub the stain with an old toothbrush
• Rinse with warm water and repeat if necessary
• Wash in hot water according to care label on garment

3. Grass stains

Whether it’s the kids’ cricket whites or a linen blouse after a particularly vigorous garden party, grass stains sustained by direct impact on the lush green stuff can wreak havoc on elbows and knees. Grass is an organic matter so before you reach for the stain remover, first:

• Soak the garment in cold water before applying any products
• Pre-treat to loosen the stain before washing
• Apply liquid laundry detergent directly onto the stain
• Gently rub the affected area
• Wash as normal in washing machine

For stubborn stains, try rubbing alcohol or bleach, depending on the fabric. Use according to instructions on the label and don’t use bleach regularly as it will break down the fabric over time.

4. Sweat stains

White shirts and school tunics, sundresses and sports uniforms all bear the brunt of high exertion. Follow an American Mum’s trick and attack yellowing by:

• Making up a solution of two parts hydrogen peroxide to one part dishwashing liquid
• Apply the mixture directly onto the stain, then cover with baking soda
• Scrub the area with an old toothbrush, then leave for an hour or overnight if possible. Wash as usual in washing machine

Address lingering odours by dipping underarm area of garment ahead of washing in a solution of 1 parts vinegar to 1 parts water and allow to sit for 20 minutes. Wash as normal.

5. Beetroot stains

The health benefits are not to be ignored but you can’t miss a beetroot stain. Treat as soon as possible:

• Blot stain with paper towel from outside inwards to avoid spreading
• Mix one tablespoon of laundry detergent with two cups of water
• Hold a sponge or cloth to the back of the stain and blot repeatedly with the solution until stain disappears
• Wash as normal in washing machine

6. Tomato food stains

Tomato-based sauces are fraught with danger, clinging not only to your pasta but your favourite top as well! Remove tomato-based food stains caused with a little help from nature:

• Wash article as normal as soon as possible after stain occurs
• Hang outside in direct sunlight to dry naturally
• That’s it! Leave in the sunshine for several days if necessary to move stubborn stains.

This method works just as well for removing stains from tablecloths and napkins.

7. White shoes

Just because your white sneakers don’t see any action on the sporting ground, doesn’t mean they don’t cop a knocking on the street. Spot clean marks as they appear to avoid a big scrubbing session down the, err, track.

Pods: Laundry pods are convenient and easy to use, taking the hassle out of measuring your liquid or powder detergent. Pods are best for standard, everyday loads. However, if not dissolved properly they can lead to residue on your clothes. To avoid this, make sure to place them directly in the drum and not in the detergent drawer. What’s so special about Ryobi 18V HP wet & dry hard floor cleaner?

Full disclosure: I was skeptical about this type of machine from the start. I’m a reluctant housekeeper at best and generally a pretty lazy one. I have a small inner city cottage with limited storage space, so it would be hard to convince me that this machine deserved to take up space in the cupboard under the stairs.

There’s a real buzz in the household cleaning appliance space around these wet and dry vacuum cleaners though and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Do they really vacuum and mop your floor in one go?

How to use Ryobi 18V HP wet & dry hard floor cleaner

Charge the battery, then simply plug and play. Fill up the clean water reservoir and add cleaning solution.
Note: when filling the water reservoir, make sure you have the solution bottle open and handy so you can add to full water tank with one hand.

To start, tilt the handle down and press the power button. It won’t operate if you try to turn it on when upright. Press “solution pump” button to activate wash mode.

Unit has good maneuverability and drives itself with a nice kinetic motion. For best results, work backward to avoid walking on the wet floor. This motion is not intuitive but makes sense once you get the hang of it. Because it feels like you’re vacuuming, you’d usually walk forward as you clean.

When finished cleaning (or if the alarm sounds indicating it’s full), empty the dirty water container. I’d suggest you do this onto the garden, otherwise you have to pick the collected floor debris out of the sink.

Use the self-cleaning stand for a wash after each use (make sure you’ve left enough battery power to do this). For a thorough clean, hand wash all the pieces, air dry completely, then replace onto the unit. Leave rollers in the dock to dry upright.

Store the unit away in the cupboard. It’s pretty compact so doesn’t take up alot of room – about the same area taken up by a mop and bucket, that you didn’t have to hand wash before you put them away.

Results from our test

My floorboards at home are over 100 years old and have a water-based finish and big gaps that would catch the rollers. I decided to test the Ryobi 18V HP wet & dry hard floor cleaner at our weekender as it has a lovely open-plan kitchen/dining/living area (6650 x 5100mm – approximately 34m square) with a high gloss Estapol, polyurethane finish on timber floorboards. I didn’t think the floor wasn’t very dirty but machine performed well and filled the dirty water tank with dark brown water showing it was more soiled than I thought. It lifted light foot soil, dirt and leaves and mopped the floor at the same time, leaving it clean and smelling nice. There were a few streaks, but I was hyper aware when testing and normally this wouldn’t bother me at all.

Note: Twisting or angling the machine down too far to reach under furniture kinks the hose and the unit sounds an alarm and stops working. A good safety feature, but a bit limiting. I had chairs inverted onto the dining table and the backrests hung down making for a lower, but not unreasonable clearance, and it kept beeping and stopping.

Another beep-and-stop situation was when I attempted to suck up anything bigger than a corn kernel. It’s because of the rollers – they make a nice, smooth cleaning action but hinder the ability to suck debris like a hose vacuum would. The good news is you won’t accidently suck up Lego or the back of your earring.

A deeper clean or concentrated effort to tackle sticky corners or pick up food spills would be far more unpleasant to clean up with this machine, and I knew from Tahni’s experience with the Dyson Wash G1 not to bother using this kind of machine to clean actual mess. It does clean it up, but transfers the mess to the machine that you then have clean afterwards.

Does this type of machine clean the floor? Yes, it does. Does it simplify your life? Not really. 

Overall, is Ryobi 18V HP wet & dry hard floor cleaner worth it?

The Ryobi 18V HP wet & dry hard floor cleaner is certainly not a “game changer” for me. You might think it’s worth it, but at $699, it’s not something I’d invest in to be honest. If I’d kept the unit, I know I’d think twice before I got it out each time and would instead just send around my robotic vacuum cleaner, which does the same job, then reach for my spin mop and bucket.

I’d recommend it for light, regular cleaning and to save on having two cleaning appliances – perhaps in apartments where cleaning duties tend to be lighter and there’s less storage space.

Krissy says she doesn’t want to be precious about her soft furnishings and chooses outdoor fabrics even for indoor purposes. This means the fabrics are hardier and more resilient to dirt and even mould. She says that by using this fabric on her dining chairs, they are easily wiped over after spills and can be spot cleaned.

2. Opt for white

While it sounds counterintuitive, Krissy loves white fabric for her sofas. “I love using a lot of white because you can just throw it into soak and then into the washing machine and it comes out like new,” she says. “And it’s the same with all of our bed linen.”

3. Buy extra fabric

Krissy often buys extra fabric for her chairs and sofas. “If you get a couch made, just get additional fabric,” she says.

“Then rather than having them fitting perfectly, then you just pull them off and wash them. I could change those covers a couple of times a week because of the dogs. You’ve got to be able to have a house that’s lived in. I never want something for show. For me, it’s very much got to be a house that everyone can sit on the couches.”

4. Make your own cleaning products

Krissy hates using chemicals around the house so makes her own mixtures to use for cleaning. Her favourite is her all-purpose spray, which is a mixture of:

• 1 tablespoon soap
• 1 litre hot water
• ¼ cup white distilled vinegar
• Juice of 1 lemon
• 10 drops of lavender essential oil

Mix ingredients together and pour into a trigger spray bottle. Shake and use to spray and wipe down surfaces.

The secret to spotless oven racks, in all honestly, is to clean them regularly enough that grease and grime doesn’t build up in the first place. Smaller oven racks can simply be placed in the dishwasher (you may have to remove the dishwasher basket to accommodate larger racks) on a hot cycle, while larger racks can be wiped down with hot soapy water and a non-scratch scour after each use.

Missed the boat on regular oven rack upkeep? That’s ok. It’s still possible to make your oven racks look as shiny as they did the day you first installed the oven. Here we run through 4 methods to make your oven racks shine, ranging from all-natural cleaners to more potent formulations. 

1. Bicarb soda and castile soap

Does the thought of soaking oven racks in harsh chemicals make you nervous? If you’d like to stick to non-toxic oven cleaners, reach for that $2 box of bi-carb soda to banish odours and dissolve grease, naturally. 3. The bathtub method

If you have a large, or double oven, you may not be able to fit the oven racks in the kitchen sink. This is where a bathtub can come in handy. But, before you try any of these methods, protect the bottom of the bathtub with a towel to prevent scratches. Here are some ways to make oven racks sparkle using a bathtub: 

Natural

Place oven racks in the bath tub. Sprinkle oven racks with a generous amount of bi-carb soda and fill the tub with hot water until the racks are just covered, adding a few squirts of natural dishwashing liquid into the bath as it fills. Soak the racks overnight before scrubbing and rinsing clean. 

Dishwashing tablets

Place the oven racks in the bathtub and fill with enough hot water to cover the racks. Dissolve a dishwashing tablet in the water. Allow the oven racks to soak for an hour or overnight before scrubbing and rinsing clean. 

Alternate version: Wrap oven racks in aluminium foil and place a dishwashing tablet inside the foil. Place the foil-covered racks in the bath and fill with hot water until the racks are submerged. Allow to soak overnight before carefully unwrapping the aluminium foil, and scrubbing and rinsing clean. The aluminium foil is thought to increase the shine of the racks and prevent rust spots. 

Napisan or laundry boost powder

Place the oven racks in the bathtub and fill with enough hot water to cover the racks. Sprinkle a scoop of Napisan all over the oven racks. Allow the oven racks to soak for an hour or overnight before scrubbing and rinsing clean. 

An unattended, filled bath tub can pose a drowning risk for young children. Take care when using this method for cleaning oven racks.

• Only use cold water—hot water will produce the opposite effect, forcing the blood to thicken and set in the fibres of the carpet
• Dab the stain instead of rubbing it—rubbing will only push it deeper into the carpet

The best way to get blood out of carpet

1. Apply cold water to the blood stain
2. Dab the bloodstain with a clean rag
3. Repeat until the blood stain has been removed
4. Allow the area to air dry or dry with a fresh, dry rag

If the stain needs a little extra help then you can repeat this process, this time using a dishwashing liquid and cold water solution. Simply add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to some cold water and blot at the stain.

How to get dried blood out of carpet

If the blood stain is very stubborn, or has already dried, then you might need a stronger cleaning option, such as hydrogen peroxide or a baking soda and water paste.

Before using a hydrogren peroxide solution, its important to test the solution on a very small, discreet area of the carpet to make sure that it doesn’t cause any discolouration. If you deem it suitable, you can apply a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution to the blood stain and let it sink in for a few minutes. Then dab the stain with a clean cloth until it has completely dissapeared.

If your carpet does react to hydrogen peroxide, or you simply prefer a gentler solution, then a baking soda and water mix is your next best bet. To make this solution, combine baking soda with a little water to make a paste. Then, apply the paste straight onto the stain and let it sit for around half an hour, before starting the cold water method from the beginning.

3. Clean stained food containers by squeezing lemon juice onto stained plastic, rub with the cut side of the lemon, let dry, and then rinse off.
4. Refresh your bathtub with a paste made from baking soda, cream of tartar and a little lemon juice. Wipe paste all over the bathtub and allow it to sit for 30 minutes. Rinse clean with water and a soft cloth.
5. Clean brass and copper with the cut edge of half a lemon dipped into salt and rubbed onto the surface.
