While we haven’t permanently moved into our gardens just yet, alfresco spaces might soon need their own floor plans as we increasingly embrace multi-zone living. “People are happy spending more time at home and want to make their outdoor space as inviting and multi-purpose as possible, even with a small footprint,” says Anna Williams, director of Your Beautiful Home.

“More people are asking for a variety of zones in the backyard; destinations that create a sense of occasion in different areas and for different purposes.”

Whether your dream is a sunken fire pit or cool cabana, our experts provide you with all the inspiration you need to plan, create and decorate your own outdoor living spaces.

Create an outdoor kitchen

Promising extra cooking space, more mingling with your guests and no cooking odours inside, an outdoor kitchen elevates entertaining and turns everyday mealtimes into social occasions.

“Begin by looking at the available space, your everyday lifestyle and how much you entertain,” says Toby France, director of Exterior Architecture. “Be realistic about what you’ll use in an outdoor kitchen. Just a simple barbecue and bench space? Or everything from a fridge to a teppanyaki grill?”

Next, Toby says to consider design and materials. “Robust and low-maintenance materials, such as poured concrete, stone and stainless steel, withstand the elements and suit the ‘solid’ looking aesthetic of an outdoor kitchen.”

Remember to ask professionals about drainage, fire safety, minimum clearances and ventilation.

Plan your pool house

“Nothing embraces summer living like a pool house,” says architect Adam Hampton, director of Hampton Architecture. “Primarily a place to relax and entertain connected to the garden or swimming pool, they often have a flexible, open-plan layout to serve a range of uses, such as guest accommodation.”

Typically, a pool house complements your home and relates to your landscape and pool setting. Adam suggests elevating a structure with “tall ceilings, stacked doors, retractable awnings and shutters”.

Look to resort-style living for interior inspiration, suggests Anna. “Light, with timber accents and neutral, textured fabrics, tropical fans and soft lighting. Think about storage and fixtures like speakers, too. Essentially, create a gorgeous destination in your garden and make it feel like an occasion to go out there.”

Built-in joinery and fold-down beds help to maximise space.

Add a cabana

“Cabanas are great for extending the use of your outdoor space when it’s hot, providing privacy and shade, particularly by a pool,” says Toby. Practicalities aside, cabanas conjure visions of cocktails and the exclusivity of a hired daybed at a chic resort.

“You can create a shaded eating area, but more often it’s about relaxing,” explains Anna. “A large daybed always hits the spot, as do hanging chairs or bean bags that are easily moved. Layer them with outdoor cushions and add wall lights. Think about the things on holidays that make you smile – we’re trying to recreate that.”

The most common cabana design has three sides, and they are mainly built using masonry or timber.

Splash out on a shower

The backyard bliss of an outdoor shower isn’t just for coastal homes or pools. A refreshing duck under one on a hot day? Yes please. And with cold showers now part of our daily wellness routine (or still on our to-do list), where better to soak up the feel-good vibes of nature while boosting your mood, circulation and energy?

“Once you’ve considered water access, it’s about location and look,” says Toby. “For instance, do you want a ‘feature’ or simply an outdoor shower by the gate to wash sandy kids?”

In terms of aesthetics, consider a luxe metal finish and a design style for your outdoor shower that complements your home. “To create an attractive space, look to planting and a backdrop,” adds Toby.

“If you used a beautiful tile elsewhere, repeat that or try weatherboard, which works with many styles, then dress it up with towel hooks and a shelf.”

Lush greenery will bring the finishing tropical touches to your outdoor shower.

Pop in a fire pit

“As our concept of outdoor living expands, a designated fire-pit zone has become another outdoor ‘room’ where friends and family can gather,” says Adam. “You don’t need a lot of space and they’re ideal for underused corners of the garden, adding focus and a meaningful area.”

While a sunken zone isn’t necessary, Toby says it’s ideal for fire pits. “It has a more intimate and immersive feel, especially with in-built seating, and also offers protection from the wind.”

As for fire-pit planning? Confirm requirements with your local council and check if your proposed fire pit is a safe distance from your home and other flammable structures. Choose materials and designs according to their specifications, then weigh up the various heat sources, from dry seasoned wood to ethanol.

There’s something magical about the moment the weather begins to warm up; doors fling open, lunches spill onto patios, and living rooms extend seamlessly into the sun. For me, it’s the cue to give my outdoor space a little love; to swap tired seating for something that invites you to linger longer as the afternoon fades into evening.

It’s no wonder then that Temple & Webster’s Director of Insights and Trends, Lucy Sutherland, predicts outdoor furniture to be huge this Black Friday. “With summer and holiday entertaining around the corner, Aussies will be upgrading their outdoor dining and outdoor lounge settings to create spaces to feel welcoming, easy and ready for gathering,” she says. “The pieces that play well outdoors or lend themselves to festive entertaining are going to be very popular.”

Even though Black Friday falls on Friday, November 28 this year, many of our favourite home brands selling have already started their sales, including MCM House, James Lane and King Living. And we’ve got our eyes on quite a few of their stunning outdoor pieces. If you’re among the many Aussies predicted to be freshening up your outdoor space this Black Friday, we’re sharing all the details on the sales here. What pieces brands are offering at discount, what those discounts are, and when you should buy to avoid missing out.

Your sale snapshot

 • Many brands have already started their Black Friday deals on outdoor furniture, including MCM House, James Lane and King Living
 • Experts predict outdoor furniture to be a top-selling category for Australians this Black Friday
 • In particular, pieces that are made to last in our harsh summers and that work for festive entertaining will be popular

In short, you could be getting up to a thousand dollars of savings on outdoor furniture this Black Friday. So if you’ve been thinking about a new outdoor dining set, or just a coffee table or side table to rest your morning tea and newspaper when you sit outside in the mornings, be sure to take advantage of these massive discounts from now until Cyber Monday.

Advice for shoppers

For some outdoor furniture brands and stockists, Black Friday sales don’t extend to delivery costs. Check those fees before buying, as you might want to throw a few other furniture or homeware updates in your cart to make the shipping fee worth it. Also, once you’ve ordered your outdoor furniture, if you have some you’re getting rid of, book the council pickup right away. It might have to be scheduled weeks from then, and you don’t want to be stuck for too long with the old piece.

What outdoor furniture will be on sale for Black Friday?

We’re predicting nearly all major brands selling outdoor furniture and their stockists will offer Black Friday discounts. They include MCM House, Freedom, Temple & Webster, Koala, James Lane, Castlery, Luxo Living and King Living. Some Black Friday sales we already know about are MCM House’s 25-50% off everything, James Lane’s 30-60% off select items and King Living’s up to 60% off Australian designs, plus savings on selected pieces when you buy two together.

How do you set up an outdoor seating area?

Before you start adding everything to cart, ensure you have a clear purpose and plan for your outdoor seating area first. Is it a place for relaxation or entertainment? Or is it primarily used for alfresco dining? Once you’ve figured out the purpose of your outdoor lounge setting, you can begin to think about the different furniture and decor pieces to consider.

Measure your space – although this may seem obvious, measuring the amount of space you’re working with is crucial with any design job. You don’t want to overestimate your space and find yourself with a lounge set that is too big or small for your needs.
Choose your furniture pieces – when looking for outdoor lounge furniture, finding water-resistant and hard-wearing pieces is a must. Along with durability, you want to ensure your outdoor lounge seats are sufficiently padded for comfort, too.
Choose your seating arrangement – find a way to add chairs, day beds and coffee tables that invite conversation and easy movement. The easier it is to enjoy your outdoor area, the more time you (and your guests) will spend there.
Add some personality – an outdoor throw cushion can go a long way. Don’t be afraid to add your own personality with some thoughtful touches like a throw cushion, blanket or an outdoor coffee table lamp.

What brands are best for quality outdoor lounge furniture?

Some of the best brands for quality outdoor furniture that can withstand the elements are Early Settler, MCM House, King Living, Castlery and Freedom. However, all of the outdoor furniture options we’ve listed above have been screened for quality materials, and the brands are ones we consider trustworthy. This means that you can shop our top picks with confidence.

What outdoor furniture can withstand the elements?

For furniture that can withstand the elements, look for pieces designed specifically for outdoor use, with weather-resistant frames, quick-dry cushions, and UV-stable finishes. Pieces made from materials like powder-coated aluminium, teak, or all-weather wicker are built to handle sun, rain, and humidity while retaining their beauty year-round.

What materials are best for outdoor furniture?

Teak, aluminium, and synthetic wicker are standout choices for their durability and timeless appeal. Teak naturally resists moisture and ageing, aluminium won’t rust, and high-quality wicker adds texture without sacrificing resilience. For cushions, opt for fabrics like Olefin or Sunbrella that resist fading, mildew, and moisture.

While the Northern Hemisphere dreams of snow, we’re setting tables poolside, surrounded by lush gardens and warm breezes. For those who love to entertain with style, this season is all about elevating tradition with a fresh, contemporary twist. Think crisp green and white palettes that nod to heritage, layered with bold stripes, shimmering metallics and sparkling glassware for that festive edge.

It’s the perfect backdrop for long lunches that stretch into golden evenings, where conversation flows as freely as the champagne. Whether you’re reinventing heirloom pieces or adding playful pops of colour, the key is effortless elegance – a look that feels curated yet relaxed.

Ready to inspire your next celebration? Here’s how to create a chic outdoor setting that captures the spirit of Christmas and the beauty of an Australian summer.

“Choose a theme for your festive celebration,” says Home Beautiful editor-in-chief Elle Lovelock. Colour is a strong driver to bring a whole look together. “Green and white nods to tradition, but here we’ve elevated the palette to suit a contemporary setting – bold striped outdoor chair cushions lend a chic poolhouse feel, while shimmering metallics and gleaming crystal add the festive sparkle needed to mark a celebration.”

“Consider all five senses when creating your table setting and environment,” says stylist Nonci Nyoni. “Curate an inviting atmosphere that your guests will want to spend time in – candles or flowers for scent and visual interest, background music and lush fabrics of varied textures for touch and of course, a tasty meal!”

“Use objects of various height’s to add interest to the tablescape – lamps or candles for height paired with shorter vases, glassware and decorative bowls,” says stylist Nonci Nyoni.

“My mum just loves this the green and white setting, she has green plates but has been inspired to go out and buy another dinner set to style up with them.”

Elle Lovelock, Home Beautiful editor in chief
“Choose a colour palette of 3-5 colours to work within for all the homewares pieces you’ll use in your table setting,” says Nonci Nyoni. (Credit: Photography: Brigid Arnott / Styling: Nonci Nyoni)

Nonci suggests personalising each plate setting with handwritten name cards, “To make them feel extra special this festive season!” Elle agrees. “Reinvent your vintage homewares like plates and napery by mixing and matching with more modern pieces,” says Elle. “Extend the season’s treats to each place setting with individual chocolate gifts for everyone. Each year we wait with bated breath to discover the bonbon offerings from our favourite brands. These are another festive addition to the table with colour, pattern and texture.

“Heirloom plates play nicely with pops of coloured glass and fun décor pieces.”

Elle Lovelock
“Don’t clutter the table with too many items to allow guests to interact freely with each other across the table and be able to easily reach for things during the meal,” says Nonci. (Credit: Photography: Brigid Arnott / Styling: Nonci Nyoni)

Nothing says summer sophistication quite like fresh flowers. “Blousy white roses are always a good idea,” says Elle. “Garden roses are in full bloom at this time of year and you can buy them by the bucketload at market – a surefire way to add elegance to any occasion.” Cluster them in simple glass vases for a relaxed look or pair with silver accents for a touch of glamour. Whether scattered along a long lunch table or arranged in generous bunches, seasonal blooms add instant elegance and a sense of occasion that feels both timeless and fresh.

Beyond the table, consider editing the decor in your entertaining spaces to reflect your chosen theme. Ditch cushions that don’t match, take the plunge to invest in new outdoor furniture cushions, outdoor rugs or umbrellas.

Here's what you should include in it.

The post Everything you need to know when planning an outdoor kitchen appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Adding an outdoor kitchen to your home is a worthwhile investment for many reasons. It’s a smart way to increase your living space and make your alfresco area more usable throughout the year.

The addition of an outdoor kitchen means you’ll likely spend more time outdoors with loved ones, which can only be good for you!

If you’re wondering if it’s worth the effort if you’re going to move one day anyway, the answer is yes. Outdoor kitchens are known to increase the value of a property and give you a worthwhile return on investment if you ever decide to sell.

Before you get started with your planning, we answer a few key questions about outdoor kitchens.

How much does a full outdoor kitchen cost?

The price range for outdoor kitchens is wide, depending on how you approach it. If your budget is tight, do your research to find something on the more affordable end of the spectrum, especially if you’re handy enough to install it yourself.

Otherwise, an experienced landscaper would be able to create an outdoor kitchen for you, including building outdoor kitchen cabinets and installing a barbecue, sink and fridge with the help of an electrician and other trades.

Keep in mind that a roof or pergola can increase costs, up to $20k+, depending on the materials used. The same goes for a deck, which can be a surprisingly significant cost. It might be helpful to ask for a breakdown in the quote and keep in mind that certain aspects may require council approval, which can add time and fees, too.

How to build an outdoor kitchen on a budget?

There are definitely lower-budget options when it comes to an outdoor kitchen. You can buy outdoor barbecue kitchens off the shelf for under $600, not including joinery, if you fancy having a go at outdoor cabinetry yourself. The more minimal you go, the more affordable it will be – you might want to just install a simple bench and barbecue on a deck alongside a dining table.

Decide on your budget first, then look at what materials you’re interested in using and whether they’ll fit in with it. For example, the popular choice of a poured concrete benchtop might be on your wish list, but not necessarily in your price range. You’ll also need to factor in the costs of a licensed plumber and electrician.

Do you need planning permission for an outdoor kitchen?

Depending on what you’d like to include in your outdoor kitchen, you may need council approval. If there are retaining walls above a certain height or you’re including built structures like a roof or a deck of a certain size, this would need to get the tick of approval before building commences.

Check with your local council to find out what can be done without approval and what would need to be submitted via landscape architect plans. For the latter, you may need to undergo a series of tests (at your own expense) to confirm things like whether you’re in a bushfire prone zone and therefore would need to use non-combustible materials to be compliant.

Keep in mind that if you go through the process of getting council approval, you will need to comply to the proposed plan and any specifications they make, such as particular trees not being removed if requested or driveway position requirements. The occupation certificate will only be issued if these requirements are met.

In short, it’s a lengthier and more costly process and easier if you (or your landscape architect) are able to develop a design that doesn’t require council approval. This often can’t be avoided though, and will be a smoother process if you go in informed.

These outdoor kitchen ideas will help you get started.

1. Choosing a barbecue

A barbecue is the obvious choice for an outdoor kitchen, but there are many different types. A built-in barbecue offers a seamless look as it’s integrated into the joinery. A barbecue with a hood helps keep heat inside and cook food through while grilling.

Some barbecues have a rotisserie, which allows you to cook large pieces of meat for a crowd. Think about the number of people you’ll be cooking for, what your go-to entertaining meals are and how often you’ll use it to help you make the best decision.

If the space is enclosed without much ventilation you may need a rangehood. “An electric barbecue requires minimal ventilation, while a charcoal or solid fuel unit will need vented extraction,” explains Russell Crosdale from Winning Appliances.

“To create an intimate feel here, the walls and ceiling were painted black, which also provides crisp contrast to white cabinetry housing a full outdoor kitchen and Beef Eater barbecue. “It took us a long time to find the perfect black, the paint we tested either had a blue tinge, or just wasn’t black enough,” explains Justine, who finally chose Resene Black. 2. Should you get a pizza oven?

A pizza oven is great for entertaining, thanks to the showmanship of prepping pizza dough, getting the wood-fired oven roaring and watching the bubbles form as the cheese melts. While there are many electric pizza ovens designed for indoor use, they’re not suitable for outdoors. Generally, you want to go for a gas option for outdoor use.

Alternatively, you could invest in a wood-fired pizza oven. These can be built from scratch by someone with expertise in the craft or bought and installed in your outdoor kitchen. Talk to your landscaper about what would best suit your space and the expertise available.

3. Have you thought of these?

Kitchen servery window: It’s helpful to have your outdoor kitchen situated near your indoor kitchen so it’s easier to transport items in and out easily. A kitchen servery window makes this even easier. This one has bi-fold windows that can be slid across to close them when not in use and opened up to invite conversation or to pass plates, condiments, salads and utensils through.

Lighting: When planning lighting for your outdoor kitchen, be sure to combine both task and ambient lighting. The functional task lights might include downlights that point at the barbecue so you can see what you’re doing, as well as lights along a path to get to the outdoor kitchen safely at night. Ambient lights help for when you want to enjoy the outdoor area at night without turning on a glaring bright light above. Softer lighting choices are beneficial for these instances.

Fan: Sitting outside on a dry, hot day is much more pleasant with a fan’s light breeze to cool you down. It’s an inclusion that’s surprisingly often overlooked but makes a big difference.

4. The benefits of privacy screens

Most of us want privacy in our backyards and decorative screens are a great way to achieve this. They’re also a good way to create zones or outdoor rooms for a more intimate feeling without building solid walls.

A popular place for a screen is behind the barbecue in an outdoor kitchen. Simple coloured slats create a sleek look that finishes the space and provides an added layer of privacy.

5. Can you use a regular fridge outside?

It’s so convenient to have a fridge in your outdoor space. You can stock it full of beverages for when people come over, reducing the need to have an Esky filled with ice. It’s not a good idea to use a regular fridge outdoors due to exposure to the elements. Look for fridges designed specifically for outdoor use as they will be more weatherproof.

Throwing a party? The secret to a memorable night isn’t just the food and drinks – it’s how you arrange your furniture. From cosy seating clusters to styling tricks that guide guests where to sit, Home Beautiful editor-in-chief Elle Lovelock and Coco Republic Head of Interior Design, Anna DiNapoli share their tips in our step-by-step guide on how to make your home flow beautifully and keep the conversation going.

“The most important factor is how you plan to use your outdoor space day-to-day,” says Anna. “If you love sharing meals outdoors, hosting dinner parties, or barbecuing with friends, a dining setting is essential. If your lifestyle leans more toward relaxation, quiet moments with a book, casual drinks, or sunbathing, a lounge area may be more rewarding. Family dynamics also matter — young children may get more use out of versatile lounge pieces, while those who entertain regularly often benefit from a dedicated dining table.”

Step 1: Choose smart fabrics

“If you’re investing in new pieces, think about how they’ll perform when guests are in the mix,” says Elle. “Washable or protected fabrics are a must – you’ll thank yourself later if red wine meets the sofa. These days, even outdoor fabrics work beautifully indoors. Many are so soft and refined you’d never guess they were designed to withstand the elements, but they’ll stand up to the realities of entertaining.”

Materials and weather conditions play a key role – particularly when choosing between dining and lounging furniture. Anna’s advice is to ensure your outdoor furniture withstands the elements where it will live in your home. “In sunny climates, UV-resistant fabrics and powder-coated aluminium frames help prevent fading and wear. In coastal areas, rust-proof materials like stainless steel or aluminium are crucial,” Anna warns. “Lounge settings often feature cushions, which may need covers or storage in wet weather, while dining tables are usually easier to maintain year-round. Matching materials to your climate and maintenance preference ensures longevity.

“Timber offers a warm, natural look but requires maintenance to stay pristine.”

Step 2: Blur the line between indoors and out

A seamless party experience often flows between the living room and the garden. “To keep the look cohesive, ensure your outdoor furniture echoes your interior style,” says Elle. “Whether that’s matching materials, colours or shapes, a sense of continuity creates harmony and makes the transition from one space to the other feel effortless.”

Anna agrees that cohesion is key here. “Use complementary materials, colours, and finishes across both settings so they feel unified rather than separate. Define zones with rugs, planters, or lighting — placing the dining area closer to cooking zones and the lounge near a view, pool, or firepit.” Select furniture that can be arranged in various flexible configurations. “Low-profile dining tables or “chat-height” tables can double as both dining and lounge-friendly solutions,” says Anna. “Layering textures and maintaining a consistent design language ties the two functions together seamlessly.”

(Credit: Coco Republic)

Step 3: Encourage conversation

In terms of furniture layout, you may need to choose between lounging and dining furniture. “The biggest mistake I see when people set up for guests? Lining seating up against the walls like a waiting room,” says Elle, who instead recommends grouping furniture to promote interaction. “Pull armchairs and sofas closer so people naturally face one another – it makes chatting so much easier.” Anna agrees, adding that space will dictate the functionality of your outdoor entertaining zone. “In smaller balconies or courtyards, you may need to choose one primary function — either a table for dining or a small sofa for comfort. Larger spaces, such as gardens or terraces, allow for both, but creating zones is crucial. Dining areas work best near kitchens or barbecues for easy hosting, while sofas are often placed to take advantage of views, shade, or sunlight. Flow between areas should feel natural and uncluttered.”

“Remember, it’s hard to join in if you’re stuck on a long sofa at one end, so break up big seating zones into smaller, more intimate clusters.”

Elle Lovelock

(Credit: Coco Republic)

Step 4: Set the right number of chairs

At the dining table, more isn’t merrier. If you’re hosting four at a six-seater table, take away the spare chairs. “Empty seats create a sense of absence and can make guests feel awkward,” says Elle. “A perfectly filled table feels warm, welcoming and just right.”

To make the most of your space, consider how you will use it most to hit the comfort factor where you need it most. “Dining chairs are upright and structured, supporting proper posture for meals,” says Anna. “They’re ideal for eating but less suited to long hours of lounging. Lounge seating, on the other hand, is deeper, cushioned, and designed for comfort — perfect for reading, napping, or relaxing with friends.

Dining vs lounging furniture: the pros and cons for your alfresco zone

Pros

 • Dining: Perfect for meals, structured seating for larger groups, creates a clear entertaining hub
 • Dining: While essential for entertaining, may see less frequent but more memorable use
 • Lounge: Adaptable configurations, encourages relaxation, suitable for both small and large gatherings, often more comfortable for long use
 • Lounge: Offers more versatility for daily use

Cons

 • Dining: Limited flexibility, requires more space, may not be used daily unless meals are consistently taken outdoors
 • Lounge: Not ideal for full meals, usually needs side tables or low tables to function well for drinks and snacks

Step 5: Get the cushions right

Cushions can make or break a sofa when entertaining. They should support guests so they can sit up straight without sliding down, but don’t go overboard with outdoor cushions. “If people are perching on the edge because there’s no space to sit, you’ve gone too far,” says Elle. Strike a balance between comfort and practicality.

Step 6: Be the guide

When guests arrive, don’t leave them hovering with a glass in hand. Welcome them, pour a drink, and guide them to where you’d like them to sit. It sets the tone immediately and makes everyone feel at ease.

(Credit: Coco Republic)

Step 7: Create moments of movement

How do you determine whether guests would benefit more from a dining table or relaxed lounge seating? “It depends on the type of entertaining you do most often,” says Anna. “For long lunches, special events, or dinner parties, guests will appreciate a formal dining setting. For cocktail evenings, afternoon grazing platters, or casual weekend get-togethers, lounge seating encourages mingling and creates a relaxed, social atmosphere. Many hosts choose both if space allows, creating a natural flow from dining to lounging.”

If space is tight, break up proceedings throughout the day. “One of my favourite entertaining tricks is to stage the evening in different zones,” says Elle. “Begin in the living room or outdoor lounge with drinks and canapés, then move to the dining table for the main event. It keeps the energy fresh and makes the night feel like a little journey.”

Step 8: Define your zones

Help guests identify where to gather by styling with intention. A vase of flowers, a drinks tray or a plate of canapés signals, “This is where you belong.” These little markers make seating areas obvious and inviting, and they double as gorgeous styling touches.

Hosting is all about making people feel comfortable, and your furniture layout plays a starring role. With a few simple tweaks, you can transform your home into the perfect backdrop for a party that flows beautifully from start to finish.

Dancing flames, close companions and a cool winter’s night. Our warming fire pit ideas confirm there’s no better way to extend the time spent in your garden than with the addition of real flames.

Create your own warm and cosy outdoor destination that is equal parts sculpture, gathering place and chill-out zone, all in your own backyard. Designs can range from charming and cosy to bold and bespoke. Read on to find out the latest and greatest fire pit ideas and which ones will work best for your outdoor space.

Planning your fire pit

Before you take the plunge and buy or build your own fire pit, consider the design and size of your garden or courtyard, in order to figure out what type of fire pit will best suit the space.

Planning is vital – you’ll need to choose whether you want a fixed or portable model, then think about your budget, style and fuel.

1. How to choose fuel for your fire pit

Think about the heat source and intensity you’re after. “The most effective heaters are ones designed to produce plenty of radiant heat,” says Daryl Crowley, dealer representative at Jetmaster. “We recommend considering a gas fireplace in the early planning stages, to ensure the right gas and power provisions are allowed for.”

If it’s a large garden and you love a raging bonfire, a big Corten steel fire pit is the go. “Or you may want something low-maintenance and not have to worry about collecting and chopping wood,” says Paddy Milne, owner and founder of Victorian outdoor design hub The Scape Artist. “Just light your ethanol-fuelled fire pit and away you go.”

A wood-burning fire pit

A wood-burning fire pit is hard to beat in your outdoor entertaining area, but keep in mind that council regulations require the use of proper kindling and dense hardwood, otherwise too much smoke is created. Burning garden vegetation, damp wood, toxic materials or waste is prohibited, so a supply of clean wood is essential.

A weatherboard home in the background with large evergreen fir trees and a cosy outdoor firepit surrounded by stone and brick in the foreground.
“Burning a fire is great to keep the mozzies away,” says landscape designer Adam Robinson. Tim Trussell from Northcote Pottery suggests using natural insect repellents by burning sage or rosemary in your fire pit. “This also adds a delicious perfume to the surrounds,” he says. (Photography: Jenna Kensey)

Gas burning fire pits

“Gas and wood heaters provide the most radiant heat and work the best in external settings,” says Daryl Crowley. A gas-fuelled fire pit can run on plumbed-in natural gas – more cost-effective if it is available – or LPG bottles. It can burst into life with the touch of a button, even using smart-home technology.

Ethanol fire pits

Without messy coal, soot and smoke to impact you or your neighbours, ethanol fire pits are environmentally friendly, elegant and economical. “Ethanol is clean-burning, renewable energy,” says Simon Cullen, sales manager at EcoSmart Fire. “It’s a fire controlled within a cylinder – safer than having a wood fire in your backyard.”

For a modern aesthetic, ethanol fire pits are ideal for decks, small courtyards or even a balcony, as you need to be quite close to its flames to feel the warmth. Best of all, they require little-to-no installation so they can be filled, lit and enjoyed in less than 30 minutes.

2. Where to position your fire pit

Once you’ve locked in the type of fire pit and considered the logistics, turn your attention to the details as a fire pit promises good times ahead. “It’s about making something special out of every day,” says landscape designer Michael Bates of Bates Landscape.

Create an entire relaxation zone with inviting seating placed around your fire pit, where the best garden vistas can be enjoyed. “Far enough away to be clear of overhanging trees, yet in view so it will draw people out from the house,” says Michael. Contemporary gardens may suit a minimal metal tray or an oversized steel bowl to bring weathered texture. A heritage garden calls for a classic, decorative dish.

Again, planning is important. Measure up before you buy, allowing 1.5 to 2 metres all around your fire pit to ensure safety and comfort, and avoid damage by using a stand, to elevate your fire pit over heat-resistant surfaces such as tiles, sand, stone or gravel.

3. Seating around your fire pit

Seating around the fire pit is essential. Bench seats, outdoor sofas, chairs and ottomans are all flexible and portable options. “Consider non-precious seating, such as timber or stone,” says landscape designer Adam Robinson from Adam Robinson Designs, which can withstand the weather and plenty of outdoor fire action. In terms of where to position it, “Flexible seating rather than fixed, allows for snuggling closer to the fire in the cooler months, and the ability to move a little further away when it’s warmer or you have the fire raging,” Adam suggests.

4. What style of fire pit is right for you?

It’s possible that your fire pit will stay in position in your garden all year round so when collecting fire pit ideas, the style you choose should work with the rest of your landscape design.

“Not only do they take the chill out of outdoor entertaining,” says Tim Trussell from Northcote Pottery. “They are a feature piece in their own right and are sure to become the heart of the garden.” From a custom-made fire globe to a traditional clay chiminea or a rustic portable wood-burning fire pit, shop around for the size, style and price point to suit your needs.

5. Fire pit safety and maintenance

Annual maintenance keeps your fire pit burning safely. All models, including ethanol and gas, will happily sit out in the weather and have drainage holes for water to pass through. Cast iron needs little care, whereas lighter steel constructions and those in coastal locations are more prone to rust. Gas fire pits have a glass safety screen, child lock and safety cut-out functions, while ethanol fire pits are cool to touch everywhere except the flame – great for families with young kids or pets.

Check council regulations in built-up areas before you finalise plans for a wood-burning fire pit, which come under the same ruling as braziers, chimineas, pizza ovens and barbecues. In rural areas, consult your local Rural Fire Service, as a permit may be required.

Safety always comes first so have a fire extinguisher on hand and ready access to water, and supervise children at all times. Do not burn your fire pit during high winds or a fire ban, and fully extinguish your fire after each use. So you’re all set for the next cosy occasion.

STYLE TIPS:

Our top tips to create wow-factor with your cosy masterpiece:

 • Use LED lighting to highlight architectural features and hard landscaping
 • Invest in custom-made bench seating to hug the edge of your fire pit
 • Add a cover so your fire pit doubles as a coffee table
 • Design your own fire pit surround to complement nearby landscaping materials
 • Nestle your fire pit into a slope or hillside to avoid interrupting the view from the house

I found the perfect outdoor dining set for my small garden https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/shopping/reviews/outdoor-dining-set/ Tue, 20 May 2025 06:42:37 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1269551 It passes the compact backyard test.

The post I found the perfect outdoor dining set for my small garden appeared first on Home Beautiful.

When we finished landscaping our outdoor space, I knew I needed a dining set that would enhance – not compete with – the calm, neutral palette we’d chosen: textured stone, soft whites and deep greys.

I wasn’t after anything oversized or fussy, just something modern, fresh, and compact enough to suit our smaller area. I spotted the Freedom ‘Biscay’ outdoor dining set after seeing it in a shoot with MasterChef’s Khanh Ong (he was sharing his ideal dinner party setup), and it stopped me in my tracks.

The tone, the texture, the shape – everything aligned. It had that soft white finish with stone-fleck detail that looks built for modern Australian backyards. I took the plunge, added some white dining chairs for more relaxed seating, and now I use the stools all around the garden. It’s one of the best additions I’ve made to the space.

Freedom ‘Biscay’ round outdoor dining set verdict

 • Our rating: 9/10
 • Why we rated it a 9/10: It has a fresh, modern aesthetic that ties in with natural materials beautifully. It’s compact, practical and versatile enough for smaller spaces, with stools that can double as side tables or garden seating. At $1395 for the table and four stools, I think it offers great value for money.

Pros

 • Beautiful stone-like finish and colour that suits modern outdoor spaces
 • Compact round table ideal for smaller patios or courtyards
 • Versatile stools that can be used throughout the garden

Cons

 • No umbrella hole (something to consider for very sunny areas)
 • Stools don’t have backs, which may not suit longer meals without extra chairs
 • Flat-packing requires a bit of assembly time

What’s so special about the Freedom ‘Biscay’ dining set?

It delivers designer-level outdoor style in a compact, practical format – with finishes that mirror natural stone.

Key features:

 • 4-piece set includes round table and four matching stools
 • Table and stools made from lightweight yet sturdy concrete-look composite
 • UV-resistant
 • Designed for outdoor use
 • Complements modern landscaping palettes
 • Seen in styling features and editorial shoots, including with Khanh Ong

I love the look of the mix-and-matched table and chairs, while keeping the space cohesive by still using the stools for extra seating. (Image: Rebecca Hooton)

‘Biscay’ dining set: materials and size

 • Table + stools made from: Lightweight concrete-look composite
 • Table dimensions: 110cm diameter x 76cm height
 • Stool dimensions: 38cm diameter x 45cm height
 • Colour: White with stone-like flecks

How to use the ‘Biscay’ dining set

No complicated steps here:

 1. Assemble the table following the included instructions (you may need two people for ease).
 2. Position in your desired outdoor space.
 3. Use the included stools or mix in your own outdoor chairs for flexible seating options.

Results from our test

From the moment it was set up, the Biscay set felt like a seamless extension of our landscaping. The soft white finish and organic texture blend effortlessly with our stone pavers and rendered garden beds, while the round table encourages a relaxed, conversational vibe. It’s compact enough not to dominate the space but substantial enough to feel generous when entertaining.

The stools are surprisingly sturdy and double as handy side tables when we’re not dining. After a few months of use, I can say it wears well, cleans easily with a damp cloth, and always looks fresh. We often mix in our white outdoor chairs when we want to linger longer over meals – and the combination feels both stylish and functional.

What do the experts think about the Freedom ‘Biscay’ outdoor dining set?

While former MasterChef contestant Khanh Ong has praised the set in styling shoots for its modern elegance and outdoor appeal, home experts love it too.

In a piece for Homes To Love, writer Kate Gibbs notes:

“With its terrazzo-look inlay and solid fibre and cement construction, this five-piece outdoor dining set is made to last. The table and four stools have a unique and stylish charm.”

While House & Garden included it in a round-up of the best outdoor furniture:

“This five-piece set features a chic terrazo look throughout that will look right at home in any modern outdoor entertaining area. Crafted from long-lasting fibre and cement, this set is a durable pick for the outdoors.”

Freedom Biscay dining set

Overall, is the ‘Biscay’ outdoor dining set worth it?

Absolutely – especially if you’re after a piece that blends functionality with design flair. The round table makes the most of tighter spaces, and the tone is spot-on for modern, neutral palettes. It’s not the cheapest set out there, but for the quality of finish and versatility, the price feels justified.

It’s the kind of piece that feels both stylish and timeless – an ideal base to build your outdoor entertaining style around. And because it works just as well with stools as with added chairs, it gives you room to evolve how you use the space over time.

Where to buy the Freedom ‘Biscay’ dining package

 • Freedom, $1395 (was $2099). They’re flying off the shelves, so see if they’re still in stock in your area.

Alternatively, you can buy the ‘Biscay’ stool and table as individual items.

When the weekend rolls around, there’s nothing better than taking the party outdoors. Whether you’re gathering around a big dining table under the trees or setting up a spontaneous spread on the deck, entertaining alfresco is all about relaxed charm. With the right touches—think easy table styling, fresh drinks and a menu that’s more “serve yourself” than silver service—it’s surprisingly simple to host with flair. And if the weather turns? A good indoor–outdoor flow means the fun doesn’t have to stop. From casual catch-ups to last-minute lunches, here are six gorgeous ideas to make weekend entertaining feel effortless and chic.

A white exterior of a home. A stone clad fireplace has a chimney that reaches to the white terrace that stretches above the alfresco barbecue kitchen and dining area. There's a strong indoor outdoor connection with alfresco dining and alfresco lounge furniture with a barbecue.

Modern alfresco living

For a contemporary outdoor space made for easy, elegant entertaining, position a generous outdoor sofa and armchairs around a low coffee table—perfect for relaxed drinks and conversation—within reach of an outdoor dining table. This invites guests to linger over long lunches or alfresco dinners. An undercover BBQ area means cooking is part of the fun, come rain or shine, and a striking outdoor fireplace adds warmth and atmosphere as the sun sets. With everything close at hand it’s ideal for hosting friends and family with laid-back style.Remember to draw up your bar cart to save trips back and forth to the kitchen.

Effortless outdoor elegance

Set the scene for effortless outdoor dining with a nature-inspired table that feels fresh and inviting. Start with crisp white crockery as a clean canvas, then layer in natural textures—think linen napkins, timber boards and earthy ceramics. Directors’ chairs add relaxed elegance and are easy to pull up for extra guests. Finish with a simple arrangement of garden blooms or foliage in a glass vase for a touch of laid-back beauty that ties it all together.

Golden hour gatherings

Extend your living space beyond the back door with a big outdoor table – a must for an alfresco zone – along with chairs or bench seating for outdoor entertaining. String up the fairy lights for when the sun dips below the horizon, and dress your table in seasonal hues and top with a central flower arrangement. Keep things simple with a refined colour palette to match your favourite table linen.

Beautiful all year round, this home truly comes into its own in summer. Conveniently located off the dining domain, the sunny spotted-gum deck – perfect for indoor-outdoor living.

Keep it casual

Especially for impromptu entertaining, bright colours and accessories add flair to your table and make guests feel welcomed, with a minimum of fuss. Add a pot plant to your tray or table for a touch of portable greenery. A small pot of rosemary not only looks good, but it’s a hardy plant that will thrive outdoors.

Cosy undercover soiree

A big, comfy outdoor lounge is the perfect addition to any outdoor oasis. Recline and relax on warm nights with a friends and a shared bottle of wine while the kids play in the pool. A small table allows guests to pop their drinks down somewhere and can also be used to add to the ambience of your outdoor retreat. A small vase filled with fresh blooms or a potted plant is a beautiful focal point.

Bring the outdoors inside

If bad weather hampers your entertaining efforts, bring the outdoors in with lunch or afternoon tea staged just inside your alfresco zone, where nature will form a backdrop to lush green and white styling with touches of texture.

Modern monochrome

Create a dramatic table with a modern monochrome palette of tableware. Layer rattan placemats with charcoal plates or black accents and bowls in all white. Add textural interest with metallic candlesticks and grey or natural linen napkins. Pile lush fruit onto a plate for added drama with grapes, berries and passionfruit for a fresh centrepiece.

Deck out your patio (and stay sun-safe) with these sturdy patio umbrellas https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/outdoor-ideas/large-patio-umbrellas/ Thu, 12 Dec 2024 23:42:00 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1053746 A summer must-have.

With longer and warmer days, we’re finding ourselves enjoying our time relaxing outside more frequently. Whether that’s sunbathing in your backyard on a lazy Sunday afternoon or hosting a classic BBQ, there’s just something sacred about a backyard get-together that is intrinsically Aussie. That’s why it’s a good idea to make sure your backyard or patio is summer-ready. And how do we do that? You ask. With a large outdoor patio umbrella, of course.

What is the most wind-resistant patio umbrella?

When it comes to patio umbrellas, finding one that is wind-resistant is a must. There’s nothing worse than seeing your umbrella topple over with a single gust of wind – not only is this a safety hazard, but it could also damage other pieces (like dining tables and chairs) that you also have occupying your patio. So, how do you know a patio umbrella is wind resistant? Here are a few key elements to consider, below.

 • A durable frame – this may sound obvious, but what your patio umbrella is made out of is, well, make or break. Consider materials like aluminium, fiberglass or steel as they provide structural integrity to withstand most winds.
 • Reinforced joints – your umbrella should be reinforced where possible.
 • Design – most wind-resistant patio umbrellas have an aerodynamic shape that allows wind to easily flow around it (rather than catching it). Some designs may include vented canopies or special wind vents to reduce wind pressure.
 • Heavy base – a house is as good as its foundation. This saying rings true when it comes to finding a high-quality patio umbrella. A stable and heavy base is crucial to ensure your patio umbrella is firmly on the ground.

How do I choose an outdoor umbrella?

Choosing an outdoor umbrella requires considering key factors for Aussie conditions. Start with size—ensure the canopy provides ample shade for your space. Look for materials like UV-resistant fabric and rust-proof aluminium or steel frames to withstand Australia’s harsh sun and coastal climates. A sturdy base is essential for stability, especially in windy areas. Consider adjustability, such as tilt and crank mechanisms, for customised shade throughout the day. Style matters too—opt for designs and colours that complement your outdoor decor. Finally, think about portability if you’ll be moving it between spots like the backyard, pool, or beach.

How do I protect my outdoor umbrella?

Protecting your outdoor umbrella ensures it lasts through diverse weather conditions. Always close and secure the umbrella when not in use, especially during windy or stormy weather, to prevent damage. Invest in a durable, weatherproof cover to shield it from sun, rain, and dust when stored. Clean the canopy regularly with mild soap and water to prevent mould and fading. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbing too hard. If your umbrella is portable, store it indoors during the off-season or extreme weather. Lastly, ensure the base is sturdy to prevent tipping and check for any loose fittings or wear.

Spring is the perfect time to breathe new life into your patio area, transforming it into an inviting outdoor retreat. With or without vast verandas and lush green views, you can spruce up even the smallest deck or courtyard with our affordable outdoor ideas for patios to make the most of your alfresco space.

The ultimate outdoor room affords plentiful seating options – generous outdoor sofas, well-worn leather armchairs, and a large daybed piled with blankets, throws and comfortable cushions for supreme comfort outside on chilly evenings.

Then, as the weather warms up, your patio becomes an extension of your living space, ideal for relaxing, entertaining, and enjoying the fresh air. To make the most of this seasonal refresh, sweep away the remnants of winter with a clean and declutter using our quick tips below. Then ease into sun-kissed spring days that bring the promise of holidays.

How to freshen your patio for spring

 1. Clear the deck – literally! Declutter your outdoor room and give all surfaces and flooring a wash down
 2. Create a neutral base with heavy timber furniture, anchored by a stylish outdoor rug to invite gathering
 3. Top sofas with plump, generous seat cushions, covered in breathable natural linen fabrics
 4. Continue the ties to nature with natural rattan armchairs positioned in conversational groups alongside sofas
 5. Decorate sideboards and surfaces with rustic vases – filled with fresh flowers for a burst of spring
 6. Punctuate cushions covered in outdoor fabrics of elegant olive and apple greens
 7. Drape throws here and there for extra softness and to provide a cozy warmth on chilly evenings

If you’re in the mood for a makeover, consider adding a pop of colour to celebrate the season. The addition of bright or patterned cushions, outdoor rugs, and vibrant planters can instantly uplift the area, creating a cheerful atmosphere. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns and colours – spring is all about embracing the joy of renewal and growth.

Incorporating greenery is another essential step. Potted plants, hanging baskets, and even a vertical garden can bring life and texture to your patio. Opt for a mix of flowering plants and lush foliage to create a balanced, vibrant space.

Finally, consider your lighting. As the days grow longer, soft ambient outdoor lighting will allow you to enjoy your patio well into the evening. String lights, lanterns, or even solar-powered options can create a cosy, welcoming glow.

With a few thoughtful touches, your patio can become a beautiful, functional space that’s ready for all the joys of spring.

Review: Gozney Arc pizza oven – my new obsession https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/lifestyle/gozney-arc-pizza-oven-review/ Fri, 09 Aug 2024 04:39:52 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1253977 From dough to delicious: we'll never order out again.

The post Review: Gozney Arc pizza oven – my new obsession appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Friday nights have always been pizza nights in our house, but the sizzling success of getting a Gozney Arc pizza oven has just taken things to the next level. Read on for our review of this must-have for pizza lovers.

When the kids were small, my husband would always pick them up from school on Fridays and come home to make quick and easy pizzas. Pita bread bases with no-fuss, choose-your-own toppings, followed by a movie to finish a busy week. Family bliss.

The kids are older now and we often entertain adults on Friday nights, so it follows that my husband has coveted a home pizza oven for some time. He’s been making his own dough for years, and our New York trip for my 40th birthday was punctuated by drop-ins to Grimaldi’s under the Brooklyn Bridge, and visits to Lombardi’s on Spring Street in Lower Manhattan. These New York-style pizzas embody the fresh, simple nature of quality ingredients, blended with the enjoyment and shared experience of eating pizza with friends – something we’ve been yearning to replicate at home.

A home breadmaker from way back, my husband was frustrated with the shortcomings of pizza stones in the oven or on the BBQ – the heat was never intense enough to achieve a crispy crust without firing it quickly under intense heat, and it was impossible to achieve a flick of smokey char around the edges. Enter the Gozney Arc

Gozney Arc pizza oven review
Start me up. The Gozney Arc is quick to heat to 500ºC and hold it to cook perfect pizza at home.

Gozney Arc review: The irresistible appeal of our own home pizza oven

 • Our rating: (10 of 10)
 • Why we rated it a (10/10):

Pros

 • Gozney has produced a quality product, beautifully engineered from end-to-end – design, build and finish that creates crunchy, delicious pizzas in your own backyard.
 • It’s a cheap night in. Since good pizza costs $25 each, this is a fabulous cost saving for the household – you can make 5 pizzas for the cost of a store-bought or restaurant pizza.
 • It’s more beautiful than other leading brands! Its stylish silhouette has added a touch of wow factor to our alfresco space.

Cons

 • The gas connection on the Gozney is the new version, so fitting to your LPG gas bottle may require a trip to your local Swap’n’Go outlet.
 • Without the Gozney accessories, your pizza-making game will suffer.
 • You’ll never have a Friday night to yourself again.

What’s so special about the Gozney Arc?

A lot of research has gone into creating the Gozney Arc, and we think they’ve nailed it. Gozney has thought of everything needed for an enjoyable experience of making outstanding pizza at home, from the compact design, efficiency of the gas burner and ergonomics of the tools (the pizza cutter alone is a triumph of object design). Invest in the accessories from the get-go and it all starts to make sense. If you love pizza, this will be both a lifestyle win and an economic saviour for your household. If you cook four pizzas at home with the Gozney Arc every week, you’ll pay off the cost of your pizza oven in just six months!

 • 2-layer insulation
 • In-built digital thermometer
 • Easy-to-use controls
 • Booster or wheeled stand with winged platforms and covers all sold seperately

How to use Gozney Arc

We can’t recommend highly enough the Gozney online resources for training, tips, recipes and technique guidance. Watch all of the videos and the rest is just practice to make perfect pizza. The hardest thing is getting your pizza-forming skills up to scratch – the pizza oven does the rest of the work for you.

Don’t overload the topping! This is a rookie mistake that your kids can make on a store-bought pizza base, but if you’re making your own dough (and why wouldn’t you?), an overloaded pizza base will collapse under the weight of heavy toppings. It’s no fun scraping a soggy mess off the stone floor of your pizza oven.

Hot tip:

Once your base is formed and topped, press the two peels into action – a broad, flat placement peel, then the smaller turning peel to keep it constantly moving in a circular motion. In no time you’ll have the quintessential stance of a pizza chef – feeding a pie into the mouth of a flame-hot oven. The more times you do it, the better you’ll become and the more fun you’ll have!

Gozney Arc pizza oven review
The proof is in the pie. Get the dough right and Gozney does the rest to make perfect home pizza every time.

Experiment with different pizza recipes and getting your temperature right so that you cook the base without burning it and the top is cooked properly. We found that if the base is fine but the toppings need a little extra cooking, using the turning peel to lift the pizza high in the oven and finish it off worked a treat.

8 top tips for perfecting your homemade pizza

 1. Make a double batch of dough and freeze half for next time, so you just have to defrost and go again.
 2. Mise en plus: have all your topping prepped and lined up in bowls ready to go – particularly if you’re feeding a number of people.
 3. Don’t overload your pizza toppings.
 4. Use semolina on your benchtop when stretching and forming your pizza base to avoid sticking and aid the placement from benchtop to peel.
 5. Keep your pizza moving – turn after just 30 seconds to avoid burnt sections and don’t stop until it’s all cooked.
 6. Keep lifting the base to achieve “leopard spotting” and avoid burning.
 7. Don’t walk away! It takes only 2 minutes to cook a pizza, so it needs your constant attention.
 8. Test as you go – the pizza chef always eats last!

Where to put a pizza oven in your backyard

Because it has no door, your pizza oven needs to be positioned where it will be protected from wind. A strong gust will blow out the flame and constant wind will make the temperature fluctuate.

Gozney gas fitting doesn’t work?

If your Gozney pizza oven doesn’t fit your gas bottle, check the connection fitting next to the regulator. The latest models have a different thread, but your local Swap’n’Go outlet should have both types and you can simply swap old for new.

What do the experts think about Gozney Arc?

Don’t get fooled into thinking you have to get the largest pizza oven money can buy. You can only cook one pizza at a time, and in the Arc it takes no more than two minutes, so this is all you can handle to keep the pizzas coming hot and heavy. We think the Gozney Arc is the perfect design for a home pizza oven, so unless you’re a professional pizza maker and you want to invest in the Dome, which is larger, more expensive (at $2,999) and allows for wood-fired cooking, we don’t see any reason to even go to the Arc XL. Larger pizzas are more difficult to manage while cooking. The Arc does the job brilliantly.

Overall, is Gozney Arc worth it?

Sì! È meraviglioso! Now, all you have to do is convince Chris Bianco to drop by and give you a few tips #chefstablepizzaedition

Where to buy Gozney pizza oven and accessories

Get the gear. Gozney makes beautiful accessories that you can’t do without. If you’re getting the oven, our advice is to invest in the entire pizza-making experience with the right tools. You’re playing with fire here, so you want a safe, seamless process that’s enjoyable.

There’s nothing like an open fire for bringing light and warmth into a space. And when entertaining outdoors, a fireplace or fire pit is quite literally a beacon, inviting children and adults alike to gather together and to linger. The added bonus? A fireplace or fire pit allows you to enjoy your alfresco entertaining area right throughout the year. Whether you have acres of garden to play with, a roomy deck or a stamp-sized courtyard, there are fireplace options aplenty to suit your home and lifestyle. Read on for Home Beautiful’s top tips for planning a cosy makeover of your outdoor entertaining area.

How to choose your outdoor fireplace design

The size and type of outdoor fireplace that’s right for you will primarily be led by your area’s dimensions and local fire codes and building regulations. “Size matters,” says landscape designer and horticulturalist Elizabeth Weyer of Elizabeth Weyer Outdoor Design. “A fireplace needs to be in scale with the surroundings: too small and it will lose impact; too large and it may overwhelm the space and potentially restrict movement around it and also around the garden.”

Next, consider the aesthetics, including views from the house, explains landscape designer Anthony Wyer, principal of Sydney firm Wyer & Co. “A built-in fireplace makes a great focal point that you can design an entertaining area around,” adds Kathleen Murphy, landscape designer and co-owner of Kathleen Murphy Landscape Design, who recommends factoring in flexibility. “Including a pizza oven, removable grill plate [for a fire pit] and side benches maximises the possibilities for entertaining.”

The best outdoor fireplace materials

Brick, stacked stone, concrete, terracotta, galvanised or Corten steel and cast iron are all excellent options for outdoor fireplaces. “My preference is for natural, organic forms and handcrafted materials wherever possible,” says Anthony. Kathleen concurs: “Rustic materials age well and create a relaxed feel,” she says. “They also tend to be more forgiving with the elements! My go-tos are Corten steel and recycled brick, with recycled timber for seating.”

How to choose the right fuel

Wood: For ambience and long-lasting, consistent heat, a real wood fire is hard to beat. But the smoke produced by a wood-burning fire can be overwhelming in small spaces and annoying to neighbours. To reduce smoke-related health hazards, always use wood fuel that is well-seasoned and avoid burning stained, treated or painted timber, especially with open fire pits. A built-in fireplace should include a chimney to help draw the smoke away; have it swept annually to keep it working efficiently.

Gas: Clean-burning and quick to get going to start heating your space, gas is a great choice for outdoor fireplaces, especially on decks, and also for portable heating options. Built-in models must be installed by a professional.
Biofuel: Like gas, biofuel (also known as ethanol or bioethanol) is a clean-burning fuel, and no smoke means no associated health hazards or environmental pollutants to worry about. Unlike gas, however, bioethanol is a renewable resource, making it a more eco-friendly option. They don’t require electrical connections or gas lines, and a vent or chimney is similarly not needed.

Consider new outdoor fireplace designs

The latest construction and fuel technologies have enabled a raft of interesting outdoor fireplace designs. “I love the Escea Outdoor Wood Fire Table,” says Elizabeth. “It’s ideal for decks and courtyards thanks to the smoke-free flame. You can cook over it, and I like that the fire is up off the ground, which makes it safer for young kids.” Other options include the portable Milkcan ‘Tucson’ fire pit, which includes a coffee table attachment, and the Buschbeck ‘Rondo’, which is an enclosed fireplace, barbecue and pizza oven in one. If you’re keen on a bioethanol model, check out the range at EcoSmart Fire.

The regulations governing outdoor fires – including barbecues, chimineas, fire pits and fireplaces – vary from state to state and from council to council, so it’s important you’re across the ones relevant to your area before you even pick up a brick. Keep the following tips in mind:

 • Never leave a lit fire unattended, or leave children unattended near a fire.
 • Choose the appropriate fuel type, fireplace style and size for the area it will be used in.
 • Keep all combustible materials (including grass, leaves, fuel and furniture) at least three metres away from the fireplace.
 • Ensure the fireplace or fire pit is on a level, non-combustible surface such as gravel, pavers or concrete.
 • Keep a metal lid, bucket of sand, hose or fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergency.
 • Good lighting is essential around a fire area, both to ensure safety while the evening is in full swing and to guide revellers home once the fun is done. A standard outdoor spotlight will do the job, but for something more stylish, try an outdoor floor lamp, string lights or light-up seating.

When gathering pieces to create your outdoor oasis, outdoor dining sets, an outdoor firepit, a low to the ground coffee table, a portable BBQ, are just some of the few things that spring to mind. And, without realising, one of the most crucial elements of an outdoor space – an outdoor rug – is quietly forgotten.

Lucky for you, we’re here to put a spotlight on, in our opinion, one of the most important pieces within an outdoor setting, a waterproof outdoor rug

A rug – indoor or outdoor – is a great addition to any space. It can be used to separate spaces within an open plan room, or it’s a great way to add a bit of colour (and protection) to an outdoor setting. And, when it comes to choosing an outdoor rug, there are many factors that come into play such as size, shape and its weather-resistant capabilities.

What makes an outdoor rug waterproof?

At the top of our ‘wants’ when it comes to an outdoor rug is ensuring it is water-resistant or waterproof.

When purchasing an outdoor rug, it’s easy to assume all rugs are waterproof—however, this is not necessarily the case. Some are made to be used during the peak of summer (when rain is less common) and aren’t crafted to withstand a rain shower.

So, when selecting an outdoor rug (especially when the weather in Australia is…moody, to say the least), it’s vital to find one that is waterproof and weather-resistant.

Materials

Starting with the foundation, we’d recommend looking for rugs that are made out of synthetic materials like polypropylene. It’s tempting to opt for an all-natural fibre rug, however, oftentimes these are not as weather-proof as its synthetic counterparts and doesn’t end up lasting very long – costing you more, in the long run.

Polypropylene has moisture-wicking properties and is also fade-resistant – which is great when placed outdoors.

However, if you do prefer choosing an all-natural fibre rug, look for signs that it is breathable. Steer clear from all-natural rugs with backings such as rubber that prevent air from flowing through them easily.

Relaxing alfresco is the stuff of life in Australia and setting the scene with comfortable, purpose-driven furnishings can take your entire outdoor zone from drab to fab. The inclusion of an outdoor coffee table as part of the mix creates a heavenly area to rival your interior decor and the right one will provide a surface to display plants and platters, a place to pop your drinks and even somewhere to put up your feet if that’s how you roll.

Investing in furniture designed for the outdoors and made to withstand the rigours of weather as the seasons change makes good sense. Buy once, buy well. Choose a style with your unique outdoor conditions in mind – such as salty sea air, frosty winters or harsh sunlight – and your outdoor coffee table is more likely to stand the test of time.

In terms of material, timber may be the obvious choice, however powder-coated steel, recycled plastic, concrete and natural stone all feature in the growing market of outdoor furniture. Better still, choose one that can be used inside too and repeat the same table outside for a cohesive transition from living room to alfresco zone. If space allows, consider outdoor furniture sets complete with an outdoor sofa, armchairs, and outdoor coffee table and matching side tables. Why not add an outdoor rug to anchor the area and raise the style stakes?

What do you put on an outdoor coffee table?

When choosing your outdoor coffee table, go large! Try for as much surface area as possible to style with lighting or candles and leave room for food plates and drinks. When not in use, place your best potted plant in the centre to show off your green thumb and tie in with the surrounding garden. An outdoor coffee table in a holiday home by the coast or in the country may warrant a display of collected shells, driftwood, or unusual flora from local walks, but keep it simple and the collection uncluttered.

How tall is an outdoor coffee table?

An outdoor coffee table should measure the same height as indoor coffee tables – around 40-45cm high, but contemporary styles are sometimes as low as 30cm. Since you’ll be accessing food or drinks from a seated position most of the time, consider the relative height of your outdoor sofa or armchair.

How much space do you need to walk around a coffee table?

For ease of movement while keeping everything within easy reach, position your outdoor coffee table approximately 50-60cm from the front of your sofa and armchair seats. Ideally, leave 50cm on each side of your coffee table to provide ample room to walk around it.

The heart of the home is making a move and it’s headed outside. It’s no secret that Australians have an affinity for the outdoors, and now our homes are evolving to follow suit. This means alfresco ideas are front-of-mind when renovating. “Outdoor spaces have developed into extensions of the home, becoming more inclusive than ever before. These spaces are extremely versatile and can quickly convert from being intimate to a space of entertainment,” says Russell Crosdale, BBQ and outdoor culinary expert at Winning Appliances. With warmer weather upon us, there’s no better time to create an outdoor entertaining area to relax and entertain in the comfort of our own surroundings. Here are all the backyard ideas you need to plan an alfresco oasis that can be enjoyed all year round.

Planning your outdoor area

The first step to success in any renovation is careful planning, and the outdoor entertaining area is no exception. “In terms of budget, planning and execution, the outdoor living space should have the same time and considerations applied to it as the indoor,” says Matt Leacy, landscape designer and co-founder of Landart. Size and budget are the obvious starting points, but you’ll also need to determine exactly how you intend to use the space. “For example, do you want it to be an outdoor kitchen and dining, lounging, or you may want all of the above,” says Matt. “These elements are going to dictate the size and layout of the area you are wanting to transform.”

“Consider how the space might complement your lifestyle, how you intend to use it, and the flow both inside and out.”

Anthony Wyer, Wyer & Co

3 things to keep in mind when planning an outdoor area

Connection “You can create the most amazing outdoor space, however, if there’s no natural flow to it, or a strong enough visual connection, then you may have wasted your time and money,” says Matt.

Aspect “Ensure that the proposed location of the living area has a good aspect. Taking into account where the sun is in the middle of winter and summer is really important … also take note of where the prevailing winds come from. If you get this wrong, that might also rule out sitting in your space at certain times of the year,” says Matt.

Garden “The garden can be used to create intimacy, wind breaks, striking visuals, and to provide an overall sense of wellbeing by introducing the scent of flowers and the sounds of birds,” says Matt.

How do I choose the right furniture for my outdoor space?

From designer dining settings to weather-resistant lounge suites, outdoor furniture has come a long way. “Go with whatever will look best and suit the space and design aesthetic you’re going for – for sleek and modern, use powder-coated steel and aluminium. If it is more of a relaxed, coastal vibe, look at natural timbers or something woven,” suggests Matt. Hardwoods such as teak, merbau, treated pink and red gum, are among the most commonly used for their durability, while resin wicker is a more durable choice than natural wicker for woven furniture. “Then look at how exposed the pieces will be to the elements and therefore how durable they will need to be,” he says. For staple items, such as an outdoor sofa and dining table, invest in the best quality you can. “It will generally save in the long run by not having to replace them as quickly – which is also great for reducing landfill,” adds Matt.

“With cushions and fabrics, opt for pieces that are fade- and water-resistant, and made for the Australian climate.”

What are the best materials for outdoor flooring?

Balance practical with prettiness when choosing materials and surfaces for your outdoor space – the aesthetic of the space is important for an alfresco oasis, but it will need to withstand the elements, too. These are the pros and cons of the main material options for outdoor flooring:

Concrete This is a versatile, low-maintenance and durable option perfect for the dinner-party hosts who entertain often and dine outside. It can be expensive to install well, prone to cracking if it’s poorly poured and isn’t the most child-friendly option given slip factor and hardness.

Tiles Available in natural or porcelain, outdoor tiles are stylish and practical and come in a variety of shapes, colours and sizes. Crazy paving is a very popular option. Tiles are generally low maintenance and easy to clean, and natural options, such as limestone, keep their cool in hot weather.

Paving Brick paving is a timeless choice and one of the most enduring options, but installation can take longer than other options and weed control will need to become part of the maintenance routine.

Decking Timber decking is a long-time favourite and can be budget friendly with a low-carbon footprint, but it’s high maintenance and requires regular cleaning, resealing and painting. It is also more likely to be damaged by weather. Composite decking is made from a mix of wood fibre and plastics, and creates a similar aesthetic with less maintenance and greater durability. It’s often more expensive than traditional timber and can sag and buckle.

What do I need in my outdoor kitchen?

While kitchens of any kind need to be hardy, the outdoor cook zone has a lot to stand up to. Bench space is crucial for food prep and serving, but you’ll need a benchtop that’s up to the task. “Make sure your benchtops and furniture are resistant to damage from rain and humidity. In coastal areas, choose materials resistant to salt and water – and choose materials specifically designed for the Australian outdoors and exposure to the sun,” says Linda Hannah, Caesarstone Asia Pacific general manager of marketing. Engineered quartz, such as the Caesarstone Outdoor Collection, is a highly durable surface. For a natural stone, opt for something non-porous such as granite and bluestone, but be sure to seal it to reduce stains. Stainless steel is a hard-wearing and budget-friendly option, though it can be hard to keep clean (hello, fingerprints), while concrete is another low-maintenance choice.

“The best materials are durable, UV and weather resistant, and stylish.”

What are the best outdoor kitchen appliances?

Alfresco cooking has evolved from a humble barbecue to fully equipped outdoor kitchens with Bluetooth-enabled appliances. “With constant advancements in technology, outdoor spaces have become extremely innovative … we are seeing more people install ‘traditional’ kitchen appliances outdoors, such as dishwashers, fridges, sinks, and taps,” says Russell. “When shopping for appliances for your outdoor space, the most important thing to consider is the product’s materials – materials such as marine-grade stainless-steel appliances can help the longevity of the product, which is especially important for those living by the ocean. However, certain products must not be used outdoors, as they can become damaged, rusted, or weathered.” Most outdoor appliances will still require some shelter and protection, but the space also needs to be well ventilated for cooktops and some heaters. “If your outdoor space is enclosed and lacks ventilation, you may want to consider purchasing an exhaust hood,” says Russell. Don’t forget to consider the energy source of your cooking appliances and whether you’ll require an electrical output or natural gas connection.

Why is lighting so important in an alfresco entertaining area?

“Lighting is everything,” says Matt. “I can’t emphasise that enough. It is one of my favourite parts of a successful outdoor design and it has become that way for many of our clients, too.” A layered lighting plan is essential – for practicality’s sake as well as ambience and atmosphere. A general, overhead light source is the first step, but you’ll want to incorporate task lighting for food prep and cooking areas as well as ambient lighting to help set the mood when the cooking is complete and it’s time to relax. “Ceiling lights and fans can all be installed as part of the final finishing touches of your outdoor space, but the provisions for these have to be installed earlier,” warns Matt. At the planning stage, map out your main ceiling lights, ceiling fans to keep the space cool in summer, and some downlights over the cooking zone. Outdoor floor lamps can be a handy addition for retrospectively introducing ambient lighting, while feature lights in the garden can make a design statement. “Look to illuminate the key features of your landscape. This could be a striking tree, running waterfall, pool area or pathway, sculpture or artwork,” says Matt.

What are some shade ideas for an outdoor area?

Transforming your outdoor space into a seamless extension of your interiors could be as simple as installing awnings and outdoor blinds. “Consider awnings for functional entertaining areas of the garden where it is necessary to limit exposure to the elements,” says Anthony Wyer, founder of Wyer & Co. “They will help to delineate zones and create intimacy, ensuring the outdoor space is appropriate and functional year round.” Not only can an awning offer more shade and UV protection for your outdoor space, it reduces the impact of wind and even blocks the sun from reaching your home for more efficient cooling inside. Options range from an outdoor blind with a sun-blocking fabric with a pulley rope system to automated retractable awnings that can double the amount of shade and shelter you have access to.

It’s always a juggle to balance beauty with practicality – especially when it comes to creating the perfect outdoor space for a young family. However, this garden, located in Concord, in Sydney’s inner west, manages the challenge with aplomb, delivering a new and elegant poolside area to a newly renovated family home.

Landscape designer and horticulturalist Lyndall Keating of Garden Society worked with owners Frank and Anna to create a classic entertaining space using a subdued colour palette of green and white. “The house had just gone through extensive renovations,” explains Lyndall. “We had previously completed the front garden, and then the owners put in a pool as part of the renovation, so we returned to complete the poolscape and the surrounding back garden.”

GET THE LOOK

The creation of a functioning entertaining area for the family, which includes three young children, was the primary focus of Frank and Anna’s brief. The pool house is an extension of the garage, so design challenges included incorporating a driveway for practical reasons, while still keeping a sense of elegance in the layout. Glass fencing means that the pool blends seamlessly with the surrounding garden, helping to create a smooth transition between the pool and pool house.

“We extended the tiles in strips and we planted dichondra plant tiles in between as an instant coverage,” Lyndall says. The result is an area that feels dry underfoot, even when you’ve just stepped out of the pool and are dripping wet. Lyndall explains, “There’s also a nice softness, so it cools the area down in the heat of summer.”

Lush garden plantings

Mature plants were included, especially for the trees and the hedging plants, which means that the garden already has an established look despite being less than two years old. “More established specimens give you that instant grown-in feel,” says Lyndall, explaining that it prevents the garden from experiencing an awkward developing stage.

While the outdoor area flows seamlessly, there are three distinct zones designed to fit the family’s lifestyle. “The top tier is the outdoor alfresco area with the outdoor fireplace and pizzeria; the second is the pool, which is on a mid level that also incorporates the garage; then it’s one step down into the pool house,” explains Lyndall.

Anna was involved in the choice of plants, asking for a few favourites and requesting white flowers to complement the lush greenery, resulting in some fragrant plantings, including star jasmine, trellised in a diamond pattern for added interest. “White and green is a classical statement that really never goes out of fashion,” says Lyndall.

“There’s a sense of slight formality with the wire work in the pool but everything else was kept loose for joyful movement in the garden”

Summer is just around the corner, and once again life will migrate outdoors. Whether it’s a long lunch with friends, a relaxing morning coffee amongst the trees, or cocktails under the stars, there’s plenty of ways to utilise your slice of the great outdoors. From a sprawling backyard to a compact courtyard, with the right planning you can create a functional outdoor room that will be the perfect setting for the occasion.

First, plan your layout as you would any interior by taking into consideration what you will use the space for most often and occasionally. Then, add furniture, lighting, and decorative features to bring the vision to life. Unsure where to start? Let’s take a closer look at the most common uses and styles of alfresco entertaining zones…

DREAMY LONG LUNCHES

Meals outside just taste better. If you have the space, even for a two-seater dining table, you should consider adding one as it will immediately turn your garden, back deck or patio into an alfresco dining zone. Choose a non-fixed, lightweight style which is equal parts versatile and durable. Then, amp up the comfort factor with chair covers or pillows and throw rugs for when the sun retreats. Portable or fixed outdoor heating lamps will also entice guests to linger longer, as will adequate shade coverage – so position your table under a pergola, awning, or invest in a free-standing umbrella.

Your outdoor dining space should be just as comfortable as the indoors so consider accessories such as a heat lamp and ceiling fan, as well as adequate lighting.

INFORMAL LIVING

Create seamless indoor-outdoor flow by designing a laidback conversation space, complete with comfy lounges, rug, coffee and side tables, ottoman and throw pillows – all the creature comforts you’d find indoors. Nowadays, outdoor materials and fabrics can better withstand the elements, such as those in the Zara Collection from King pictured below. The fabric covers are water-resistant as well as fade- and mildew-resistant.

Solar garden lights are a cost-effective and non-obtrusive way to light this space. Place them below feature trees and alongside plants to highlight focal points in your garden.

The Zaza Outdoor features high-performance outdoor fabrics, available in a range of colours and patterns. The covers are easily removed for professional cleaning or can be replaced if you’re after a new look. Seen here with the Luna Outdoor Chair in Eucalyptus.

RELAXED BARBECUES

If you want to regularly host events – such as Christmas lunch – and entertain large groups, then an outdoor kitchen is a must. For this, you can go as basic or extravagant as you like, depending on space and budget. Start with a bar fridge, storage for plates and cooking essentials, and a built-in barbecue, then luxe it up with a woodfire pizza oven, additional beer and wine fridge, and sink.

To bring the outdoors into the space, place potted plants around or add a vertical garden, especially if your area looks out over an unsightly fence. Water features will also add to the ambience and a string of fairy lights will make the space feel magical after sunset.

A casual sofa setting offers additional informal seating for large groups. Just be sure to add a coffee and side table to perch drinks.

DRINKS BY THE POOL

You don’t need a swim-up pool bar to enjoy cocktails by the water, but what you do need is a pair of relaxing sun lounges or day beds and a freestanding umbrella. Add a small occasional table to hold drinks while you dip in the pool and your set-up is complete. From lightweight aluminum to durable wicker with sink-in pillow-tops, our pick is the Jasper Sun Lounge by King which features WeatherWeave, a high-quality outdoor fabric handwoven by the brand’s artisans. It’s soft to the touch for comfortable lounging but withstands the elements; resistant to fading or degrading over time. Bonus, the lounge has hidden storage underneath for towels, hats, sunscreen…. or a spare cocktail shaker.

Candle lanterns add character as well as light. Position them in safe areas around the pool to accommodate for those late-night swims.

QUIET CORNER

Whether it’s a bench seat nestled amongst foliage or a hanging egg chair on the deck, a solitary space to enjoy a book, a coffee, or just a moment’s peace and quiet is a valuable addition. Choose a spot that’s tucked away – right down the back of the yard or side garden – then add plenty of comfy soft furnishings and potted plants to up the tranquillity factor. There are no design rules for this space other than it should bring you joy; it’s yours to imagine and create.

Seating of any kid is the easiest way to create an inviting outdoor space, but even more so in the form of a cosy hanging chair.

When Brisbane couple Justine and Matt began house hunting, they didn’t cast the net wide: instead, they narrowed their search to just one leafy inner-city suburb. Inspired by friends who had moved from the Gold Coast to Brisbane, the couple were after a similar lifestyle change where they’d spend less time commuting and could walk their children Beau, Elli, Louella and Cruz to school. “Matt and I loved the suburb, but every house that came on the market sold really quickly and we kept missing out,”recalls Justine.

The home exterior is flanked by greenery.

Although building wasn’t something they’d considered, when the couple chanced upon a tiny 1930s bungalow on a huge block in the area, they realised it was the perfect opportunity to knock down to create their dream home. For Matt, an experienced custom home and luxury pool builder, it was also a chance to build something for his own family.

Within the large open-plan living and dining spaces, furniture selections were key in defining separate zones. In the kid-friendly living area, a generous King Living ‘Neo’ Modular Sofa provides plenty of space for everyone to spread out, with Adairs cushions and a Malmo Linen throw in Honey adding a dash of colour. A favourite purchase was a luxe velvet sofa from Coco Republic.

“We’d renovated in the past, however, Matt had never built a new home for us, so we really embraced the freedom to start from scratch and come up with a place we absolutely loved,” says Justine.

Although most furniture was bought specifically for the home, a timber coffee table the family has had for years works perfectly, with the steel legs providing a black accent, which is a recurring theme throughout. For a similar table try Provincial Home Living.

The pair rented the bungalow for a year, allowing them time to perfect plans and design a striking two-level, open-plan home with flowing outdoor areas geared around the pool and entertaining.

The front ‘good room’ is Justine’s tranquil haven. “I wanted it to feel luxurious and feminine,” she reflects of the space filled with pieces from Coco Republic, including a velvet sofa and marble coffee table atop a wool ‘Steele’ rug. Although rarely used, thanks to Queensland’s temperate climate, the fireplace from Restoration Station adds to the formality, while Justine chose the ornate silver mirror from Reflect Mirrors for “a touch of Hollywood glam.”

“Matt spent a lot of time observing how the sun moved across the block, and the north- easterly aspect informed where rooms and windows were placed,” explains Justine.

A deep square island topped in Carrara marble from Precision Stone Services sees plenty of action in this busy household of six. “It’s where we all gravitate,” says Justine, pictured with Matt, of the bench teamed with chic stools from Provincial Home Living. “Because it’s so big, there’s plenty of room for the kids to do their homework at the bench and we can chat while I’m making dinner or snacks.” Opting for a modern yet timeless Shaker- style look, the couple chose joinery by Cabinet Fit that was colour matched to the walls in Dulux Lexicon Quarter, with pewter hardware coordinating with a pendant from Beacon Lighting. A glass splashback was an inspired choice. “It allows us to see through to the front door and stairs, which is really handy and makes the kitchen feel even more like a central hub,” adds Justine. Herringbone floors are a chic touch.

Two years since the house was finished, sun-drenched spaces are enjoyed daily, with doors and windows flung wide open.”With four kids, we wanted everyone to have plenty of space, so they’ve all got their own bedroom upstairs, and downstairs, everything happens in and around the kitchen and pool,”says Justine.

Recycled red bricks add a rustic backdrop to wine storage within the butler’s pantry.

While Matt’s craftmanship is reflected in the build, Justine’s sophisticated yet family-friendly styling shines throughout the interior, where black French oak herringbone floors, Carrara marble kitchen and bathroom surfaces, handcrafted tiles and chic furniture epitomise effortless elegance.

In the dining area, watery hues inspired a commission piece titled Cloud Valley by artist Rachel Prince, which complements a replica ‘Skygarden’ pendant light from Mica Lighting.

Interior selections were carefully considered and layered over time.”For the first 12 months after we moved in, the front living area was completely bare so I could get a feel for the space and see how it would be used,” says Justine, who relished turning it into a luxe’ Hamptons meets Hollywood’ retreat.

The dining setting from Provincial Home Living adds classic charm.

Picking up several Master Builders awards, the couple appreciate the industry recognition, yet Justine reflects the ultimate reward is enjoying what they’ve created together.

A Coco Republic ‘Rawson’ bar cabinet is restocked at Christmas, for after-dinner drinks with friends. On the wall, a pair of prints from Olive Paddington is a nod to Hamptons sophistication.

“To build our forever house here is a wonderful feeling,”she says.”Even on holidays we don’t often feel the need to getaway, it’s just so lovely being here.”

Cocooning and elegant, Matt and Justine’s bedroom on the upper level is a luxurious retreat. A custom bedhead in Warwick Velvet Dolce Onyx fabric sets the tone for the moody palette, as do Coco Republic bedside tables topped with a lamp from The French Corner, alongside an armchair from Black Mango.

“We wanted our bedroom to feel distinct from the rest of the house and I love the dark moodier feel.” ~ Justine

A VJ wall in Dulux Black Caviar teamed with timber battens defines the large ensuite in the main bedroom and provides the ideal backdrop for a Rachel Prince artwork, titled ‘Afterglow’.

A luxe Carrara marble vanity drops down to form a make-up area, complete with a pretty mirror from Reflect Mirrors and stool from The French Corner.

“The first thing I do every morning is open the house up, so there’s that connection to the outdoors” ~ Justine

Elli’s bedroom features a bedhead from One World Collection.

Justine originally had another bath picked out, but at the last minute switched to a classic Victoria + Albert ‘Elkwick’ bath, paired with Bastow Georgian tapware from Reece. “I just loved the elaborate, feminine style and I’m so glad we got it,” she says of the bath, which sits atop Nero Marquina subway tiles from The Tile Mob.

This light-infused guest bathroom embraces the home’s classic black and white palette, with textural surfaces creating layers of interest. Continuing the same joinery from the kitchen, the vanity features Carrara marble, 2-pac cabinetry and Dulux Lexicon Quarter on the VJ walls. White subway tiles from The Tile Mob help bounce light around the room, which is further enhanced by a wall cut-out designed to capture garden views. A stool from Magnolia Interiors, in the shower zone, provides a moveable platform for display.

“Matt loves plants and has spent a lot of time adding greenery, which has really brought the house to life and made it more homely.” ~ Justine

The setting for Christmas lunch and summer-long entertaining, the outdoor kitchen and dining area gets a workout during the festive season. “We host Christmas for our extended families and it’s more like a pool party,” says Justine. “We start the morning with mimosas and croissants followed by a swim. My family brings fresh seafood straight from the trawlers and we enjoy lots of salads and king prawns cooked on the barbecue, while the kids play in the pool for most of the day. An Eco Outdoor dining table is teamed with Nardi chairs from Outdoor Furniture Ideas.

Cane chairs teamed with Coca Mojo cushions are the perfect place to kick back after lunch and relax.

The resort style pool, which spans the width of the backyard, provides cool relief in summer and creates a beautiful outlook that can be enjoyed from almost any spot in the house. Key to achieving the look was sourcing the recycled red bricks, which reminded Matt of his childhood growing up in Canberra. “Red bricks are more common down south, but here their weatherworn patina works well to give our relatively new home character,” he says. Passers-by have even stopped to enquire about the rustic bricks, with more than 14,000 sourced from a recycle yard in NSW. The raw colour also contrasts beautifully with the pool interior tiled in Bisazza blue-gold metallic mosaics. Citrus trees in urns from Graceville Imports soften the brick expanse

A favourite spot for the family is the well-appointed Cabana overlooking the pool. “The kids are in and out of the water all day long and I find it really relaxing to be out there,” says Justine. “We often cook and eat outside in the cabana. We regularly have friends or family over for a swim and dinner and it’s so easy to entertain with the pizza oven and outdoor kitchen.” Furnished with pieces from Coco Republic and a second-hand Pretzel chair, reupholstered in Warwick Outdoor fabric, the neutral scheme, grounded with Eco Outdoor ‘Garonne’ limestone pavers, makes the surrounding red bricks and plants pop. For a similar Pretzel-style chair try Naturally Cane. And the pizza oven and wood holder? They’re from Bunnings

Perfect for a special afternoon tea or to round off a dinner party, this lemon, poppyseed and honey cheesecake is a crowd-pleaser.

The cream cheese filling is deliciously light, thanks to the addition of Greek yoghurt and zesty lemons. Garnish with fresh fruit (we chose three figs halved lengthways and drizzled with honey) to complete this delicately crafted dessert. And if you love this recipe, don’t forget to try this lime and poppyseed yoghurt cake too!

Lemon and poppyseed cheesecake with figs on top

Ingredients

Filling

Method

1.

Preheat oven to 180oC. Invert the base of a 23cm springform pan. Grease, then line the base and side of pan with baking paper. Put walnuts, pistachios, sugar and cinnamon in the bowl of a food processor. Process until coarse crumbs form. Add ground almonds. Pulse until combined.

2.

Add butter and process until combined. Press into the base of prepared pan. Use a flat-based glass to press down firmly. Put pan on an oven tray and bake for 15-20 minutes or until lightly golden. Allow to cool slightly.

3.

To make the filling, reduce oven to 150oC. Put half of the cream cheese in the clean bowl of a food processor and process until smooth. Gradually add remaining cream cheese through the food chute, while processing, until smooth.

4.

Add sugar, honey, yoghurt, eggs, juice and zest, and process until smooth. Scrape down sides with a spatula halfway and process until lump-free. Add poppy seeds and pulse until smooth. Pour over base.

5.

Bake for 45 minutes or until just set in the middle, avoid opening the oven door during cooking. Allow to cool in oven with door ajar for 30 minutes. Refrigerate in pan, covered, overnight.

6.

To serve, remove from pan and transfer to a serving plate. Arrange figs on top. Drizzle with honey. Sprinkle with pistachios. Cut into wedges to serve.

TIP: You may experience slight cracking upon cooling. This is partly due to the low-fat content in the yoghurt and overcooking. It is important to not continue to bake after 45 minutes if cheesecake is set in the centre with a slight wobble. It will continue to cook on cooling with door ajar. Cracking does not affect taste.

7 great ideas for using decorative outdoor screens https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/outdoor-ideas/entertaining-areas/7-great-ideas-for-using-decorative-outdoor-screens-22715/ Mon, 08 Oct 2018 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/7-great-ideas-for-using-decorative-outdoor-screens-22715 Transform your outdoor entertaining zone

The post 7 great ideas for using decorative outdoor screens appeared first on Home Beautiful.

Outdoor rooms are perfect for summer entertaining areas – think about how to make them beautiful with decorative outdoor screens – an attractive and versatile solution decorating solutions.

With the rise of the outdoor room in Australian homes continuing to dominate our summer entertaining areas, designers and homeowners alike are thinking more carefully about how to make them beautiful.

We solve 7 outdoor decorating dilemmas with the clever and versatile use of decorative outdoor screens.

Problem 1: Outdoor entertaining spaces open to neighbouring properties

Solution:

A decorative outdoor screen is the perfect solution to providing privacy for your outdoor spaces. Whether a freestanding structure or an addition to the architecture of your home, it can work to demarcate areas for entertaining from other areas of the garden and create a visual barrier between yours and adjacent homes.

Problem 2: Outdoor room feels too separate from indoors

Solution:

Extend the visual and architectural line of the internal walls effectively by using a finish such as plantation shutters on your outdoor screen to reflect your choices of indoor decorating to tie the two zones together.

Problem 3: Outdoor kitchen zone

Solution:

Use a custom-built decorative outdoor screen to demarcate a food preparation zone from the rest of the entertaining area. This slatted screen works three ways:

 1. Adds architectural interest to the framework of the pergola and

 2. Serves as a splashback to bbq cooking area

 3. Allows air flow throughout the entire alfresco zone

Problem 4: Limited space for fencing structures

Solution:

Rather than a stand-alone structure, think about how a decorative outdoor screen can do double duty by placing it in relation to other hard landscaping in your back yard – around garden beds, dividing walls or perhaps a pool area. “Blade walls or feature screens can be incorporated into your design to double as a pool fence,” says Creative Director of Secret Gardens Asher Cole, suggesting choosing colours to “…work with the existing palette of colours in the surrounding landscape or architecture”.

Problem 5: Dated front facade

Solution:

Use a decorative outdoor screen as an affordable way to soften the look of the front of a home without the need for major construction. This timber screen creates privacy for the front door and connects the front of the home to the verandah by using the same timber. A pathway directs visitors through the lawn to the entrance.

Problem 6: Featureless finishes

Solution:

Just as wallpaper creates a ‘wow’ factor indoors, the use of decorative outdoor screens to soften outdoor zones creates an eye-catching focal point against the blank canvas of rendered and painted home exteriors. Custom metal laser cut screens will age with time and provide a welcome patina to the space.

Problem 7: Lack of visual interest

Solution:

Add some pizazz in your outdoor pool cabana area with a prefabricated decorative outdoor screen in a trending pattern or finish. Tie in other elements in your pool area with planting and soft furnishings.

Whether freestanding, wall-mounted or structurally integrated, using screens allows for air-flow and creates a subtle ambience in your own signature style.
