When making interior trend predictions, the key is to collate as many perspectives as possible and attempt to identify where themes are beginning to overlap. And after reaching out to representatives from a range of Australia’s leading home brands, I can see plenty of elements popping up in every conversation. The hero trends? Deep colours, personality-led interiors, and bold, statement-making design choices.

Kate McGlone, Winnings‘ Group Design Manager, predicts that three key interior trends will emerge in 2026: “Rich, confident colour palettes, bold, high-gloss sophistication, and the elevated laundry.”

She states that design enthusiasts should “expect to see rich tones of purple and mustard make their way into interiors next year.” However, if you want to go deeper than decor, her high-gloss mention might add some more excitement: “Think darling high gloss finishes and intentional joinery. Whether it’s through statement kitchen cabinetry, accent furniture or a striking feature wall, this look is all about embracing bold opulence to bring depth, confidence and individuality into the home.”

Similarly, Temple & Webster‘s Director of Insights and Trends, Lucy Sutherland, sees 2026 interiors angling away from the quiet minimalism we’ve grown so used to, and towards “individuality and emotional connection.” She states that “we’re seeing a real shift away from that overly curated, ‘one-look-fits-all’ style toward homes, and are now seeing spaces filled with more warmth, personality and meaning,” adding that “comfort, character and authenticity are the new markers of style.”

In the past, I’ve made the all-too-common mistake of amassing a collection of furniture and objects that I liked the look of, without really thinking about how they might work together. The result? This time, being a little older and just a tad wiser, I know exactly what I want to create and how to do so, and I’m bringing you along for the journey.

Forecast: Earth-toned palettes are evolving

It’s no secret that organic palettes have dominated interior trends in 2025. However, as we move into 2026, I’m predicting a vibrant evolution: one that deepens this timeless trend, rather than departing from it. The way I see it, richer shades of brown, green, and ochre are poised to take over from the muted neutrals we’ve grown so comfortable with, ushering in an era of design that favours impact over “safe” subtlety.

This moody palette delivers the same bold impact as more vibrant colour schemes, yet feels far less intimidating to adopt; unlike plum and rust hues, also spotlighted at Milan Design Week 2025, these calming tones are rooted in nature, and prove much easier to implement into your space. That said, working with moody, earthy tones doesn’t mean you need to avoid the season’s favourite reds. In my living room, I’ve mixed rich greens with deep red accents, and although the pairing may read a little festive on paper, the finished look is surprisingly elegant.

The idea that soft, neutral palettes may soon be swapped for a richer variation of the trend is one that’s echoed by experts at the forefront of interior forecasting; Shaye Ford, Interior Designer at Miss Amara, says to “Expect a rise in earthy, darker shades; deep terracotta, burgundy, olive greens and chocolate browns; adding warmth and sophistication while still feeling grounded,” adding that she expects “warm, neutral tones” will remain as foundational staples.

And for those of us planning to weave these deeper neural shades into our own homes, it’s important to bear in mind that bolder tones are less forgiving than their softer predecessors. Successfully walking the line between ‘decadent’ and ‘smothering’ requires consideration, planning, and a keen eye for balance. My trick? Introduce statement pieces in deeper colours, like cocoa and olive, then lift the look with lighter accents. Think glints of gold, natural textures and paler décor in sage and cream. Alternatively, you can flip this advice on its head for a less-committal approach; pair a cream sofa with a colourful rug or cushions, or apply the same philosophy to your bed styling.

However, since relocating to my new Sydney abode, I’ve been working with exactly eight kitchen cubbys (many of which are filled with linens, towels, and pet essentials) and two drawers worth of bathroom real estate. Needless to say, I’ve been scrambling to find design-led storage solutions that align with my aesthetic and offer much-needed space for my things. Thankfully, I’ve finally found one that ticks all my boxes, and with endless colourways on offer, it fits into any home.

The brief

When tracking down any key furniture find, I start by creating a list of non-negotiables to narrow down the search. And for this particular piece, I had three key criteria to tick off.

1. Visually pleasing: As I’m currently undertaking an interior overhaul, I’ve promised myself not to settle for furniture that I don’t love looking at, regardless of how practical it may be.
2. Generously sized: It had to be deep enough to store my favourite dinnerware, coffee table books, and any other not-so-small trinkets that I no longer have the bench space for.
3. Quality: When it comes to storage, I need furniture I can depend on; a sturdy piece made from high-quality materials. After all, I’m not looking to start my hunt all over again if the piece I choose can’t withstand the weight of what’s inside.

And, as always, I did my due diligence, sifting through customer reviews, combing through social posts, and even heading to Reddit to look for the brutally honest truth. With all of this in mind, one piece rose above and earned pride of place in my humble kitchen: The Mixer by Mustard Made. And now that I’ve tried it out for myself, I’m ready to deliver the verdict on just how good this piece really is.

My winner: Mustard Made’s ‘The Mixer’

Standing just 100cm tall and 75cm wide, my final choice isn’t the largest storage solution on the market, but for what I had in mind, it fits the bill perfectly.

For those who know me, it’ll come as no surprise that I opted for the sage colourway, and I absolutely adore how this statement colour looks in my (otherwise quite neutral) kitchen. And having now filled The Mixer with my favourite dinnerware set, a cocktail kit, glasses, tea towels, and cookbooks, I’m pleasantly surprised at just how many things it can hold despite not being a full-sized cupboard.

However, my favourite feature might just be the fluted glass panels. Striking the perfect balance between concealing and revealing all that lies inside, I feel like I can still display my favourite pieces while still getting away with just a little bit of disorganisation. The only thing that I’d change about The Mixer is that it requires a little bit of assembly, though I openly admit that this wouldn’t be an issue if I were better at following (very clear) instructions.
