As a self-proclaimed hot sleeper who is yet to adjust to the Sydney heat, I’ve done my fair share of research into the best temperature-regulating bedding, and cotton percale sheets sit right at the top of my summer essentials list.

Serving as the perfect antidote to balmy, restless nights, this particular kind of bedding has quickly become a core bedroom must-have, especially for rooms without good air conditioning. The secret to cotton percale’s cooling magic? A simple weave, with threads alternating one-over-one-under. It may not sound like a high-tech solution, but it is an effective one, and creates that crisp, breathable, and colder quality that we hot sleepers adore.

While many of us wait for temperatures to reach unbearable highs to update our spring sheets, savvy shoppers know that now is the very best time to buy. With the scorching Australian heat moving in, cooler nights and luxurious linens have never felt more luxurious.

01

Bayley Washed Percale Sheet Set, Relish

from $125.99 (was $179.99), Sheridan

Best for: Cooling statement sheets

If you’re searching for the perfect cotton percale sheets to add to cart, I’m nominating Sheridan’s Bayley Washed Percale Sheet Set, partially because I love a bundle (and this one covers all my bases with a flat sheet, fitted sheet and two pillowcases), but also because of the airy, soft and extra breathable fabric used to create this vibrant summer set.

And despite sale season having been and gone, this luxurious set is still heavily discounted; shoppers can take this summer sleep essential home from just $125.99. And with an average rating of 4.6/5 stars, these sheets are ones you can trust. Just ask the five-star reviewer who described the set as Super soft, super comfy, beautiful, soft and lightweight covers,” before adding, “they wash really well too – minimal creasing so they look great straight on the bed. I bought a second colour as I was so happy with these.

Product image of Sheet Society Jude Organic Cotton Sheet in Sunday Stripe, ranked as one of the best cotton percale sheets and now part of Black Friday bedding sales

02

Jude Organic Cotton Sheet, Sunday Stripe

from $85, Sheet Society

Best for: Bedding that’s cool in more ways than one

When it comes to great bedding, we all know that Sheet Society is a true crowd favourite. Personally, I’m opting for their Jude Organic Cotton sheets or, alternatively, a Kane Bamboo set, for my own bedroom refresh (as I’m already well stocked with dreamy percale options), but I adore this striped set in a percale cotton weave.

As the title doesn’t explicitly say so, I want to confirm that, yes, this set is percale cotton. Occasionally, brands won’t state this in their product titles, instead opting for a simple ‘cotton’ classification. To check, head to the product description; they usually have the particular kind of weave stated there.

Product image of Linen House Winton Seagrass Sheet Set, ranked as one of the best cotton percale sheets and now part of Black Friday bedding sales

03

Winton Seagrass Sheet Set

from $64.99 (was $129.99), Linen House

Best for: A complete and luxe sheet set under $100

If I didn’t already know and love Linen House, I might think their 2025 Boxing Day sale is too good to be true, especially since it’s still going strong well into 2026. Offering generous discounts off almost everything, savvy bedding shoppers can take home high-value sets (like the Winton Seagrass Sheet Set) for under $70; this is the kind of sale that really gets my attention.

Including 1x flat sheet, 1x fitted sheet, and 1-2 pillowcases (depending on the size you purchase), this bundle includes everything you need for a cooler, restful night, even in the Australian heat. Even better, it boasts an average rating of 4.8 stars, and many raving reviews such as this one:

“To climb between the Cotton Percale Sheets 3000TC is absolutely bliss. To feel such crispness and freshness induces sleep, relaxing the body to perfection. The colour Winton Mid Blue and quality are superb matching the pallet already in my bedroom décor.”

Product image of Adairs Fresh Navy Stripe Sheet Set, ranked as one of the best cotton percale sheets and now part of Black Friday bedding sales

04

Fresh Navy Stripe Sheet Set

from $90.99 (was $119.99), Adairs

Best for: Pattern lovers

When it comes to bedding upgrades, Adairs is one of the first retailers I turn to when embarking in search of high-quality bedding. And with generous discounts and additional savings for members of their Linen Lovers club, it’s definitely worth perusing their offerings (particuarly those in the clearance section) frequently.

This Fresh Navy Stripe Sheet Set sits as my top pick. Between the playful pattern and fresh fabric choice, it serves as the perfect summer set (and proves you don’t have to sacrifice ‘fun’ designs when opting for practical fabrics). And with extra sizing options available that cater to deeper mattresses, you’re bound to find your perfect fit. While the set only has one review, its been given 5-stars, with the happy customer describing them as “lovely, soft sheets. Really easy to put on the bed and wash up nicely. Highly recommend.”

  • Australian cotton

05

Hemmed Sheet Set, Cream/Olivine & Etched Peony

from $254.15 (was $299), Boll & Branch

Best for: Truly luxurious bedding

Boll and Branch is a new find for me, and I couldn’t be happier to be across their beautiful bedding. While their percale sheets aren’t the most affordable on the market, their high-quality linen is a great investment that’ll last for years and continue to soften with time.

This stunning Olivine and Etched Peony variant would effortlessly weave into any bedroom, and the visible quality has the potential to elevate an entire space. If you’re going to update your bedding this Black Friday, treat yourself to the premium option (especially when it doesn’t come with a premium price tag).

What’s the difference between cotton and percale cotton?

Cotton is the base material, whereas the term ‘percale’ refers to the type of weave used and how the piece was made (rather than what it’s made of). Cotton and percale aren’t mutually exclusive; in fact, they go hand-in-hand.

What’s so special about percale sheets?

Australians love cotton percale sheets for their ability to regulate temperature on warmer nights. Being crisp, cool and airy (and having breathable, moisture-wicking qualities) makes them a perfect bedding option for warmer climates. They also look pretty luxurious, too.

What are the disadvantages of percale sheets?

Like linen sheets, percale cotton sheets tend to wrinkle easily. If you like a perfectly smooth bed, this may result in you spending a little extra time ironing and steaming.

Which is better, linen or percale?

Linen and percale are both great choices for summer bedding, and making the right choice for you ultimately comes down to personal preference. Both linen and cotton percale sheets are airy, cooling, and durable, but I find the latter proves more silky and luxurious than linen.

What fabric composition should I opt for?

When looking at sheets, you’ll want to decide on which material works for you. There’s no material for bed sheets that is objectively ‘better’ than the other – this is because it’s all up to your personal preference. Below are some common materials you can find bed sheets in.

Linen
Synonymous with ‘lightweight’ and ‘breathable’ is the popular textile for bedding – linen. Linen that is woven in Europe – Belgian or French Flax, for example – are great indicators of superb linen quality. Moreover, it’s a great option for summer or hot sleepers due to its natural moisture-wicking properties.

Cotton
Cotton is another very popular textile for bed sheets. It’s incredibly soft while still having the same moisture-wicking properties seen in linen sheets. The quality of cotton sheets can be determined by how long the staples are within the fabric/fibre. The longer the cotton staple, the better quality the sheets are. Egyptian cotton is known to be the premium offering of cotton sheets as its staples are extra long in comparison.

Bamboo
Also known as bamboo rayon, is also a great fabric to opt for when choosing your next sheet set. Bamboo sheets are breathable with temperature-regulating properties so a restful night’s sleep is most definitely on the cards.

Silk
As luxurious as bed sheets get are silk sheets. Not only are they soft on the skin, but it’s also a great choice for those who have sensitive skin. However, silk is an expensive material that also needs special attention when it comes to maintenance and care.

Is thread count important?

If you’ve been looking at thread count as your main deciding factor when it comes to buying new bed sheets, we’re here to add some insight. Although thread count is a key element to consider, it really isn’t the be-all and end-all of finding a good quality sheet set.

Thread count refers to the number of threads woven together per 10cm² of fabric. The general consensus is that sheets that sit around the 500TC mark are the best (for cotton sheets). It’s also important to note that thread count is not generally a good indicator for linen sheets and are often rarely listed. However, as a rule of thumb, a high thread count for linen sheets is discouraged.

While trying to track down the perfect sofa earlier this year, one Aussie furniture brand stood out from the competition. Offering furniture that strikes the crucial balance between quality and design, Koala has well and truly earned their spot on my list of go-to brands, and now that their Black Friday sale is officially live, I think it’s about time I tick off my wishlist items (and I highly suggest you do the same).

As of Monday, the 10th of November, Koala’s 2025 Black Friday sale is officially live, with sitewide savings of up to 30%. I’m already eyeing up their Torquay Modular Sofa, which is currently over $900 off, but there are plenty of generous discounts to enjoy across mattresses, bed bases, and even outdoor sets. So, if you’re planning an interior upgrade, there’s never been a better time to commit.

The details:

  • Koala’s 2025 Black Friday Sale is now live, with sitewide savings of up to 30%
  • Representatives from the brand predict that the Torquay Modular Sofa will sell out fast
  • Koala’s most-awarded mattress is currently under $1000

Koala’s tips for smarter shopping

The most effective way to prepare for monumental sales is by tracking down exclusive insider insights from those who know what’s coming. That’s why, ahead of Black Friday, we turned to Madison McAlpine, Koala‘s Brand Manager, for her expert predictions and advice on how to shop smarter this sale season.

Koala’s hot tip for Black Friday Sale shoppers: “Stock up on an extra set of covers for the Torquay, Bangalow or Koala Sofa Bed while they’re on sale. Then, when it’s time to refresh your style, you can easily swap them out.”

And if you’re waiting until the sale drops to take your favourite Koala couch home, keep this one insight in mind: Madison predicts that their Torquay Modular Sofa will be one of the first items to sell out this over the Black Friday season, claiming that it’s already “flying off the shelves.” This means that if the Torquay is sitting on your wishlist, it might be time to head to checkout.

Koala’s 2025 Black Friday sale started on the 10th of November and offers sitewide discounts of up to 30%.

What are the best Koala products to shop for during their Black Friday sale?

Black Friday mattress sales and couch sales generally offer shoppers the biggest discounts. However, popular items like the Wanda Sofa Bed, Luxe Mattress, and Torquay Sofa aren’t predicted to last long, so make sure you’re ready for checkout as soon as deals drop.

Why is Koala furniture so popular?

Koala is an Australian-owned company that creates comfortable, thoughtfully designed, and durable furniture that suits most interior aesthetics. During their biggest sales, their furniture usually drops to a very affordable price point, so savvy shoppers can take home beautiful furniture without breaking the bank.

Upon downsizing recently, I found myself facing a conundrum — my new home has no storage. That’s right: no laundry room, no built-in wall storage and, worst of all, not enough space for my clothes.

While a small bedroom can feel like an interior lover’s nightmare, it’s actually the perfect opportunity to get creative. The solution to small-space living? A storage bed.

Whether you live in a small apartment or simply want to reduce clutter, storage beds let you keep your belongings organised and out of sight — and they’re far from an uncommon solution.

“There’s definitely been an increase in customers looking for beds with storage functionality,” says Emily Davis, Buyer at Temple & Webster. “More people are looking to max out their sleeping space with a king bed, which doesn’t always leave room for additional storage furniture. A bed with gas-lift storage or built-in drawers is a great solution. Under-bed storage is also especially useful for stashing extra bedding or throw cushions.”

So whether your linen hoarding has gotten the best of you or you had no storage space to begin with, we’ve curated a guide to the best storage beds in Australia — from gas-lift options to under-bed drawers.

What factors should you consider before buying a storage bed?

Before purchasing a storage bed, make sure to measure your space and account for the floor area needed for pull-out drawers versus a gas-lift bed, as well as your intended use for the storage.

As Davis puts it: “Drawers can be easier to access, but you tend to get much more storage space with gas-lift beds as the entire base of the bed can be utilised. Gas-lift is a great hidden storage solution too as it’s hard to tell a gas-lift bed from a non-gas lift-bed just by looking at it. It makes a great hiding space for presents!”

Construction, quality and materials are also important to consider to maintain longevity of the bed. Newer beds comes with removable and washable fabric, such as the Eva Delve bed frame. You also cannot go wrong with a timeless design, such as a bedframe with a natural wood.

Are gas-lift storage beds safe?

Yes, gas-lift storage beds are generally safe when designed, assembled and used correctly. Reputable models typically feature robust frames and dependable lift mechanisms that are tested for everyday use. To reduce the risk of accidents, always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for raising and lowering the storage compartment, regularly check bolts and fittings, keep lift pistons clean, and supervise young children when in use.

Should you choose a gas-lift bed or drawers?

Floor space and storage capacity are two of the main factors to consider when choosing the right storage bed. However, as Davis notes: “Drawers tend to be more affordable as they have a much simpler design with less complex parts. Gas-lift beds require a more complex mechanism to lift up the bed base and close it, and the mechanism needs to be of a certain quality which increases the price. Having said that, they’re a fantastic investment in the long-run, providing ample storage especially for things that you don’t need to frequently access. Think out-of-season clothing or even Christmas decorations.

From choosing soothing colour palettes that grow with your child, to selecting clever storage solutions that keep chaos at bay, the right design choices can make or break your plans for the perfect nursery. We spoke to mum of two and interior designer Kathryn Lea Barnes from The Curated Edit on the best way to approach the design and decor to create one of the most beloved rooms in your home.

“Designing a nursery is one of those exciting things you dream about during pregnancy. But once the baby arrives, you quickly realise that beautiful doesn’t always mean practical. I’ve found the best nurseries are those that feel calm, look great, and actually make life easier. If it’s a space you love, then those hours spent there in the early days are even more enjoyable. Here are five tips I wish every parent knew before setting up their nursery.”

(Credit: Bold Baby)

1. Choose furniture that grows with your baby

“Babies grow fast, and their needs change just as quickly. That’s why I always recommend starting with flexible, future-proof pieces when designing a nursery.

One standout is the Bold Baby cot, which is a highly practical statement piece. Not only does it convert from a newborn suitable cot into a toddler bed, but it also features interchangeable coloured side panels, so you can update the look of your space without replacing the whole cot. Whether you’re refreshing the room for a second baby or just want a new colour scheme, this simple detail makes a big difference and means you’re buying high-quality once. Bold Baby cot is all about colour and personality, and being able to customise its look to suit your style.

To complement it, I always suggest using a dresser with a removable change table top. These are widely available and make so much sense; they double as your main change station in the early months, and once you’re out of the nappy phase, the topper lifts off and you’re left with a classic chest of drawers that fits anywhere in the home. Starting with pieces like these means your nursery isn’t just cute for a few months, it’s a space that adapts, evolves and grows with your child (and your style).”

(Credit: Bold Baby)

2. Plan the room layout for nighttime ease

“This is one I always come back to. You want a space that feels good at 2 am, not just in daylight. Make sure everything is within arm’s reach – nappies, wipes, wraps, and a fresh sleep suit. Have a chair that’s genuinely comfortable for feeding and has good arm support (trust me, your back will thank you). If it rocks, that’s a bonus!

Soft lighting nearby you can adjust at arm’s length and won’t keep your baby awake. Think about how you move through the space when you’re half-asleep, and set it up for that.”

“It’s important too that your nursery space reflects your own individual style.”

3. Use layered lighting to support sleep

“Lighting isn’t just about style; it sets the mood for both you and your baby. During night feeds, I found that a dimmable lamp made all the difference. It was enough light to see what I was doing without waking everyone up. Once the baby is no longer a newborn, they become very sensitive to light, so the darker the room, the better for naps. I recommend a cassette blackout blind that is fitted to your window, paired with blackout/sheer curtains in front of it. Keep the window finishes neutral so you can adapt the room as the child grows.”

4. Choose a colourful, yet soft palette

“If you’re like me, you want the nursery to be colourful, inviting, but not too over-stimulating. You don’t need loud colours or big themes to make a nursery feel special. Thoughtful and fun use of colour and pattern within the space means you’re creating a room that both the child and the parents find enjoyable.”

(Credit: Kathryn Lea Barnes, The Curated Edit)

5. Invest in timeless pieces

“One of the best choices you can make when setting up a nursery is to focus on pieces that will last beyond the baby months. A beautiful armchair, a quality rug that complements your colour palette, a bookcase, the right cot-to-bed combo. These are all items that can work just as well in a toddler room, playroom, or even another part of your home. Avoiding overly themed or baby-specific furniture and decor means you won’t need to start from scratch every time your child’s needs or interests shift.

For personality and fun, I love using removable wall decals or stickers. They’re a brilliant way to bring in a playful element without locking yourself into a permanent look. Whether it’s rainbows, trees, animals or geometric shapes, decals add that super fun touch while still being easy to peel off and replace later on.

As your child grows or their style changes, you want to be able to easily update the space with minimal effort. This is the perfect way to keep the room evolving, without compromising on the timeless base you’ve created.

Designing a nursery should feel exciting, not overwhelming. Start with what makes life easier for you and build in the beauty from there. If you’re stuck, don’t stress; you don’t have to get it all perfect. A little warmth, a little thought, and some clever pieces can go a long way.”

If you’re looking for new ways to ensure a restful night’s sleep is on the cards, every night, then you’ll be familiar with the recent phenomenon of weighted blankets.

Also known as calming blankets, weighted blankets are filled with materials such as glass beads or plastic pellets that make them heavier in comparison to traditional blankets. The added weight provides pressure to the body as you sleep – like a warm hug – which means tossing and turning before you finally reach deep REM sleep is reduced.

Weighing from 3kg to 14kg (depending on the size), it’s recommended that a weighted blanket is around 10 per cent of your body weight for health and safety reasons. However, once you’ve found your perfect weight (as in the end, it is still down to personal preference), unwinding and cosying up on the couch or bed after a long day will be comfier than ever.

To help you upgrade your sleep routine, we’ve rounded up the best weighted or calming blankets to help you relax in no time.

Is it okay to use a weighted blanket every night?

Once you choose the right weighted blanket that suits you, it is generally okay to use every night. Daniel Noyed from the Sleep Foundation notes that as long as the person using the blanket has enough strength and physical dexterity to lift the blanket off themselves when necessary to prevent suffocation or entrapment, a weighted blanket is generally considered safe to use.

Do weighted blankets actually work?

Weighted blankets are therapeutic blankets that are designed to mimic deep pressure stimulation or pressure therapy. A 2020 study from the Sleep Research Society found that participants who slept with a weighted blanket found that they fell asleep 13% faster, rated their sleep quality 14% higher, felt 17% more rested in the morning, and experienced 36% fewer interruptions during the night. Many noticed a calmer bedtime routine too, feeling less stressed and more relaxed as they drifted off. In another study, researchers found that 63% of participants reported lower anxiety after using a 30 lb weighted blanket, and 78% said they preferred it as a calming tool. As with any sleep aid, it’s important to select the appropriate weight (around 10 per cent of your body weight) and ensure the blanket is comfortable and suits your personal preferences for the best results.

Decorating can be a delight, especially when it comes to children’s bedrooms. Most little ones prefer colourful, creative spaces so it’s an opportunity to truly let your imagination run free. Play with pattern, pick a lively palette and, for truly individualistic interiors, incorporate a few vintage pieces.

Of course, all children grow up and as such, one of the most important considerations is longevity. Consider decor that is easily adaptable as your child develops. Stripes and checks are perennial favourites, and a velvet bedhead can be updated with increasingly sophisticated linen. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to embrace your inner child.

Clever furniture

Vintage children's bedroom furniture can be hardy.

Children’s furniture has to be hardy enough to withstand play. As such, Amy Spargo of Maine House Interiors used vintage pieces in her daughter’s bedroom, including rugs. “They’re well-constructed and have already been used, so you don’t have to be too precious,” she says. “Also, they lend a sophistication, preventing the room from becoming too babyish.”

A children's bed that doubles as a sofa.

Another clever inclusion is multi-purpose furniture. “We designed my daughter’s bed to also function as a daybed, or a sofa,” says Amy. The canopy is dowel wrapped in ‘Elena Paisley Stripe’ and topped in ‘Piet Performance Linen’, both from Schumacher.

Window treatments

A green and white nursery.

Unfortunately, there are no guarantees when it comes to a child’s sleep schedule but window dressings, which effectively block natural light, are a start. Tahn Scoon of Tahn Interiors says of the dressings in this nursery, “curtains and blinds are heavily lined and go a little beyond the architraves.”

The starting point for this space was the ‘101 Dalmatians’ fabric, a collaboration between Disney Home and Sanderson. The playful illustrations are used on the bedding and cushions.

Alcoves and nooks

These alcoves are a clever way of creating seperate spaces in a shared bedroom.
The brief called for a bright, joyful space. As such, the walls are painted in Paint & Paper Library Desert Rose, and the window frames in Farrow & Ball De Nimes. (Credit: Photography: Martina Gemmola)

Alcoves are a clever way to create a sense of privacy and zoning in shared bedrooms. This bedroom by Anna Haines of Anna Haines Design is shared by two young sisters. The nooks were cleverly created to house the girls’ beds. For extra cosiness, the front of the nooks are clad in vertical tongue and groove, while the recessed walls utilise horizontal panelling. Shelves allow each child to personalise their own space. “The girls are charmed by the nooks,” says Anna.

“The nooks strike a good balance between function and design” Anna Haines, interior designer.

Two of the most effective ways to save space are incorporating bunk beds and utilising clever, built-in storage. Anna Haines has managed to combine both in this young boy’s room. “We wanted the bunks to feel robust and refined. The two large drawers at the base feature finger pulls, avoiding the need for knobs and making them accessible for little hands,” says Anna. The blankets and rugs are vintage finds while the pear artwork was done by the 7-year-old.

Extra sleeping space

Sleepovers are often the highlight of a child’s social calendar but it can be hard to create a room that caters to extra sleeping space without impeding daily function. In this bedroom, Claire Sá, director of De Rosee Sa, used a single-over-double bunk configuration as it achieves this purpose without overcrowding. Stairs connect the bunks instead of a ladder.

“The stairs offer greater safety for younger children,” she shares, adding that the “ensuite provides a sense of comfort and independence.”

Aerin’s my only daughter so I leaned into the princess theme with a crown canopy” Lauren Mahoney, interior designer.

Lauren Mahoney of Studio Trio gave her daughter the royal treatment with a crown canopy from Pottery Barn Kids. While decorative, it had a practical purpose. “We have a heritage Federation home, and the ceilings are 3.2 metres high,” says Lauren. “The canopy draws the eye up and helps fill the space.”

Jane Churchill ‘Messina’ wallpaper adorns the walls above wainscoting, finished in Resene Dust Storm. “Walls are often overlooked but they can really elevate your interiors,” says Lauren.

Understanding your needs should be your prime consideration. If you have a bad back or suffer other aches and pains, you need to make sure you’re supported in all the right places, and make sure the comfort layers will relieve pressure.

“You could look for natural Talalay latex, as this has excellent pressure-relieving qualities, it’s supportive and derived from nature, so it is antimicrobial and hypoallergenic,” suggests Rachel. If you run hot at night, choose materials that will draw heat and moisture away from the body.

Tips for selecting the best mattress

  1. Take health issues into account
Do you have health issues? If you suffer from things like sleep apnea, get professional medical advice beforehand as to what mattress type (e.g. firmness) would be best for you.
  2. You get what you pay for
Quality comes first. Purchasing a high-quality mattress may cost a pretty penny, but it’s an investment that is worthwhile.
  3. Seek advice from a specialist
An outlet that specialises in mattresses is more likely to have specially trained staff than one where it’s only part of the business.
  4. Count the springs
If it’s a spring mattress, investigate how many springs there are (the more, the better). Just make sure the comfort layers suit your needs.
  5. Try before you buy
With all the different types of mattresses available, don’t be afraid to shop around in the form of free trials. If you’ve only slept on one type previously, you may find another type now suits you more. See if the brand offers a trial period for a new purchase.

How often should you replace your mattress?

How often should you replace your mattress? It’s a common question many ask. It’s recommended you change your mattress every seven to 10 years, according to Rachel Beard of A.H. Beard.

“Sometimes we can feel it in our body first before we can see the physical signs of having to replace a mattress,” says Rachel. “If you’re constantly waking up with aches and pains, your mattress may not be delivering the correct level of comfort and support. Or, if you’re constantly hot throughout the night.” Also, if there are significant body indentations, spills or stains, it’s probably time for a replacement.

New innovations in mattresses

A new mattress will give you the benefit of new technology, designed to give you a much better night’s sleep. “A new innovation has been the introduction of a second layer of pocket springs. This additional layer adds to the back support, improves airflow and assists in reducing partner disturbance,” says Wowbeds founder and sleep expert Gary Ginsberg, adding: “Mattresses are now using a variety of features working in parallel to reduce heat, ranging from ventilated sides to materials like cool gel memory foam.”

How to make a mattress last longer

A mattress is a big investment so you need to look after it. “A mattress protector is always the best way to keep your mattress clean, both from normal use as well as the odd drink spill,” says Gary.

“Rotate your mattress from head to toe every three to four months to ensure you get even wear.”

Rachel agrees: “Certain mattress protectors can also help with temperature regulation. Also, ensure you use a supportive base. This helps provide the best possible support for the mattress and will help prolong its life.”

What are the benefits of a wool quilt?

Wool quilts are a highly desirable bedding choice for those who seek comfort and warmth. Below are some key benefits that make wool quilts a popular choice in Australia.

Insulation

As it’s a popular material for winter bedding, it goes almost without saying that wool is renowned for its outstanding insulation properties. Its unique structure creates tiny air pockets that trap heat, providing excellent warmth during chilly nights.

Breathability

Although wool quilts trap heat to keep you toasty warm all night long, they are still incredibly breathable. That means you won’t wake up from overheating in the middle of the night.

Hypoallergenic

Wool fibres naturally resist dust mites, mould, and mildew, making wool quilts an excellent choice for individuals with allergies or sensitivities.

How do I know if my bed frame is good quality?

Choosing a bed frame that is well constructed from durable materials will be key in finding one that will last you a long time. Bed frames can be made up of a combination of materials.

These are the most common materials usually found in bedframes:

  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Fabric

All of which are great materials when looking for a bed frame. Thick wooden or metal bases are durable and prevent your mattress from sagging. Upholstered bed frames add warmth and texture to your room while providing extra comfort – especially if you often sit up and read from your bed. Bed frames with upholstered bed heads are often filled with foam and fibre for extra cushioning.

Choosing the material from which your bed frame is made is personal. However, if you’re looking for one that is sturdy and strong – opting for a bed frame made from durable metal like steel is an excellent choice. Along with this, look out for a bed frame with a good amount of slats – in other words, it shouldn’t look sparse, and the gaps between the slats are no bigger than seven centimetres.

How much should I spend on a good bed frame?

The price of a bed frame can vary. But generally, you should expect to spend around $1000 – $1500. More luxurious models can be upwards of $2000.

What type of mattress topper is best?

Whether it is about firmness, breathability or reducing pressure points – the material you choose will be the biggest factor when choosing a mattress topper.

Memory foam mattress toppers are designed to contour to your body and can provide some pressure relief and support. However, depending on the material and the cover, memory foam mattress toppers may retain heat. If the mattress cover is made of a natural material such as cotton, this should not be an issue. There are also gel-infused memory foam mattress toppers that will keep you cool in summer.

Latex mattress topper are bouncy, durable and are naturally hypoallergenic which is great for allergy sufferers. They are quite firm and heavy which might take some getting use to if you sleep with a soft mattress.

Wool mattress toppers are perfect for temperature regulation by keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. They are also naturally hypoallergenic which is perfect for allergy sufferers.

Cotton mattress toppers are soft, breathable and natural. Cotton is highly recommendation and very common among mattress toppers, however they are often more on the softer side which might mean less support.

Feather and down mattress toppers are plush and luxurious, providing extra cushioning for your sleep. Feather and down mattress toppers are also made of natural materials for those with allergies.

When choosing a mattress topper, consider how firm or soft you want your mattress to feel. If you tend to overheat during the night, opt for a natural material such as wool or cotton. For hypoallergenic properties, latex, wool, or organic cotton are good choices. For long-lasting durability, a latex or memory foam mattress will do the trick.

What are the benefits of Egyptian cotton sheets?

The quality of cotton sheets can be determined by how long the staples are within the fabric itself. The longer the staple, the better the quality. So, considering Egyptian cotton sheets are the best on the market, it makes sense that it offers extra long staples in comparison to other fabric types.

But what’s the fuss with these long staples? Well, the long staple fibres create a silky-smooth texture that is comfortable against the skin, providing a cosy and inviting sleeping experience… we’ll take three, please.

Plus, they are also durable (thanks to their long staples, no less) and are naturally breathable, meaning it’s a great option for all seasons.

16 teenage bedroom ideas they’ll love for years to come https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/bedroom-ideas/teenage-bedrooms/teenage-bedroom-ideas/ Tue, 04 Feb 2025 05:50:58 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/teenage-bedroom-ideas And how you can involve them in the design process.

The post 16 teenage bedroom ideas they’ll love for years to come appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
So you’ve blinked, and your child is suddenly a teenager. Adolescence is a whirlwind of growth and change, but one change your teen may actually welcome is a bedroom makeover that reflects their personality and interests.

“Teenagers really have their own strong ideas on what they want their rooms to look like. It’s generally the same as getting a brief from an adult!” says Lynda MacDonald, interior designer and founder of The Design Chaperone.

If you’re stumped for teenage bedroom ideas that your child will a) actually like and b) continue to like for years to come, these teen bedroom ideas from Lynda as well as Lana, co-founder of Three Birds Renovations will help you collaborate with your kids as you navigate the design process together.

How to decorate a teen bedroom

1. Create a mood board

“Your child is far more likely to get excited about their new room if they’re part of the process. It can be very exciting for them to change their room and show their friends their own personal space,” says Lynda.

A practical way to get your child involved and find common ground between ‘trendy teenage room decor’ (what they want) and ‘classy teenage room decor’ (what you want), is to create a mood board together.

It’s a strategy Three Birds Renovations swear by. “In the same way we teach our Three Birds Reno School students to create vision boards for each room of the home, we encourage children or teens who want to be involved in their bedroom design to create a vision board of their own,” says Lana.

“Create something that’s as perfect now aas it will be in five years’ time,” says Lana. (Credit: Photography: Three Birds Renovations)

One place you can search for inspiration with your teen and create a vision board is Pinterest. According to Sprout Social, there are 23 million Gen Z users on the site – which means there’s bound to be something on there they’ll like.

Create a shared board together and start pinning images you both like. Once you’ve pinned a bunch of images, hopefully recurring themes and ideas will become apparent and you can use this information as the foundation for your design.

2. Settle on storage solutions

Teenagers accumulate a lot of stuff, so its no surprise one of the top requests from parents designing teen rooms is to maximise storage. Three Birds’ go-to storage hacks for teen rooms include:

  • Baskets and wall hooks – “Quick and easy ways for teens to clean up their belongings.”
  • Multi-purpose furniture – “Bench seats with storage inside, beds with drawers in the base and shelves instead of bedside tables are all excellent ways of maximising storage while minimising clutter.”

3. Start with a neutral base

So how do you let your teen feel in control of their space while keeping the room in line with the existing style of your home? Make a neutral base colour a non-negotiable. Warm whites are always a safe bet, otherwise soft, pastel colours and earthy tones such as brown and beige won’t clash with colourful teen room decor.

“We try to guide teens in the direction of using neutrals as their core selection,” says Lynda. “Then we incorporate their ideas into pieces that are removable and easily replaced.”

Keeping the room’s underlying colour palette neutral will set the scene for a space they can grow into, rather than out of. It’s also an economical decision that will prevent you from having to renovate again just a few years down the track.

On the flipside, when the Three Birds were designing the teen bedrooms for House 15, they based their design decisions and colour palette on the vision for the home overall, which was ‘Modern Mallorca’. “Each room of the house needed to work with this holistic vision,” says Lana.

“The band they love this week won’t still be their favourite this time next year, so stay away from posters,” says Lana. “There’s so much fabulous age-appropriate artwork that will last a lot longer.” (Credit: Photography: Three Birds Renovations)

4. Focus on easy-to-update accessories

With design boundaries established, give your teen (almost) carte blanche over easy-to-replace styling decisions, says Lana. “Perhaps some fairy lights and cushions that are less expensive to replace when they get bored of them. Curtains, carpet and paint are less simple to update regularly,” she says.

She also recommends parents invest in two sets of bed linen. “Two sets of linen or a double-sided doona allows them to mix up the styling of their bed each time the linen is washed for a fresh new look.”

Some of Three Birds’ favourite places to shop for teen bedroom accessories include: Adairs, Freedom (for rugs), Kip and Co and Bonnie and Neil (for cushions).

5. Thoughtful bedroom furniture

Aside from colours and accessories, the furniture you select can also have an impact on how ‘grown up’ the room feels. A larger bed and a desk for studying might be the first furniture upgrades that come to mind, but if your budget allows, consider purchasing furniture that fosters relaxation, self-expression and an opportunity for your child to sit and chat with friends.

Some ideas include:

  • A hanging chair for reading books or listening to music
  • Floor cushions or a day bed to sit and chat with friends
  • A bookshelf for books and to display art and objects
  • A dressing table with light-up mirror
  • A bedside table with a lamp for a screen-free evening wind down

“Generally, boys still want a bit more colour and places to hang their music equipment, where as girls want a dressing table and chair, an ottoman at the end of the bed for when friends come over to sit and chat in private,” says Lynda.

6. How to make wallpaper work

If your teen has their heart set on wallpaper, Lynda says there are two ways to make it work: think long term and emphasise texture.

“A lot of our selections are based around adding texture and patterns that are indistinct, rather than using a theme such as sailing or animals which are usually kept for kids’ bedrooms.” She also says stripes or small repeated patterns are safe choices that won’t date quickly.

7. Updating a teen room on a budget

If you’re on a budget, Lynda recommends focussing on these five cost-effective updates that can quickly transform a child’s room into a teen’s dream retreat.

  • Paint or add wallpaper for instant wow factor
  • Add a colourful rug
  • Install an upholstered bed head
  • Add new table lamps
  • Update bedding, cushions and throws

Why bamboo sheets are a godsend for hot sleepers https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/shopping/bamboo-sheets/ Fri, 31 Jan 2025 05:49:39 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1053800 Soft, sustainable and cool to the touch.

The post Why bamboo sheets are a godsend for hot sleepers appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
If you find yourself waking up in a puddle of sweat each morning, it’s a surefire sign that you’re a hot sleeper.

And if you’re currently sleeping on budget sheets woven from synthetic fabrics such as microfibre or polyester, it’s also a sign that your bedding needs a serious upgrade.

Hayley Worley, founder of Sheet Society, says bamboo sheets are a great choice for those who tend to overheat at night, “Bamboo sheets are cooling and super comfy — it’s kind of a no brainer.”

But why is bamboo so good? Well, apart from being a natural fibre (with excellent moisture-wicking and thermal insulation properties) bamboo, when produced using the Lyocell process, results in fabric that feels light, silky and slippery against the skin. “Bamboo has a unique softness that’s unlike any fabric,” says Hayley. “It’s one of those fabrics that even the pickiest sleepers can get around.”

What are the benefits of bamboo bed sheets?

Bamboo comes with many benefits but key ones include the following:

  • Bamboo is a natural fibre that has excellent moisture-wicking and thermal insulation properties
  • Bamboo is the fastest-growing renewable fibre and requires less water than cotton or linen to grow
  • It has a silky smooth feel that is cool against the skin

Are there any downsides to bamboo bed sheets?

According to Hayley, even the fussiest sleepers will enjoy sleeping in bamboo bed sheets, but there is one exception. “If you’re a fan of a crisp or structured bed, then it’s probably not the right fabric for you.” If this is you, we recommend cotton sheets or linen sheets instead.

How do you care for bamboo bed sheets?

Bamboo bedding requires some special care when laundering to ensure it stays soft and lasts as long as possible. “We recommend washing it inside out and on its own,” says Hayley who also recommends selecting a cool water temperature and a mild detergent.

What are the signs of good quality bamboo bedding?

Hayley says it’s important to check the sheets you’re considering purchasing are labelled as”hypoallergenic” and indicate that they’re soft to the touch. She also advises you to opt for sheets made using the Lyocell process. “This method uses organic solvents which results in a more environmentally friendly fibre – one that is high-strength and has natural antibacterial properties.”

How to turn a small bedroom into a grand guest suite https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/bedroom-ideas/guest-bedrooms/small-guest-bedroom-ideas/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 04:02:42 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/small-guest-bedroom-ideas Make your guests feel completely at home.

The post How to turn a small bedroom into a grand guest suite appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Despite what you might think, a grand guest bedroom doesn’t have to be gigantic. If you only have a small room available to accommodate visitors, you’ll be glad to know that it’s not the size of the room that matters, it’s the way you use it. Small guest bedroom design ideas that promote a welcoming atmosphere, privacy, creature comforts and thoughtful decorative touches will be enough to earn the room five-star feedback. The ultimate goal is to make your visitors feel at home.

Setting up a welcoming guest bedroom can also be accomplished on a modest budget. Good quality bedding, fluffy bath towels and some thoughtful accessories (we’ll get to those later) are the core components of every successful guest bedroom.

Here are 6 things every cosy and comfortable guest bedroom needs in order to be ready for overnight visitors at a moment’s notice.

1. Make the bed beautiful

If you have a small guest room then the bed will naturally become the focal point. For this reason, it’s worth investing in some good quality bed linens and if possible, a headboard to really add a sense of luxury to a small space.

Mattress

If you don’t already have a bed frame and mattress, that’s the first order of business. There are so many good quality, comfortable beds available for minimal cost. Boxed mattresses are a fantastic budget option, and can usually be delivered on short notice.

Bed frames and headboards

A classic headboard and stylish bed frame will instantly make a small guest bedroom more luxurious. Check Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree for affordable second hand bed frames and headboards – what’s great about this method is that you won’t have to waste time putting together a flat pack!

Bedding

Nothing says ‘make yourself at home’ quite like a freshly made bed. Beautiful bedding will make the room inviting to your guests and allow them to have a restful night’s sleep. Ensure the bedding is appropriate for the season (don’t forget the winter doona and electric blanket if you live in a cold climate) or lightweight, breathable sheets in summer. Having extra blankets and a set of soft and supportive pillows on hand will also allow your guests to adjust the bedding exactly the way they like it.

Since this room is for guests, it’s a good idea to invest in washable pillow, mattress and duvet protectors that will keep the bedding clean long-term and from guest to guest. If you don’t expect to use your guest bedroom frequently, make sure you also place linen in dust-proof storage bags so they’re fresh and ready to go at a moment’s notice should family or friends drop by unannounced.

2. Add some soft furnishings

If you have hesitated to add too many ‘extras’ to your small guest room because you don’t want to crowd the space, you might be unintentionally making the room feel a little bare. While its a good idea to limit the amount of furniture you bring into the room, some carefully selected soft furnishings will instantly make a small room feel cosy. In fact, a set of sheer curtains are often the key to bringing some much-needed light into a small room, while a classic floor rug and couple of pretty pillows complete the space.

3. Get the lighting right

A bedside lamp is an important addition to any guest bedroom. (Credit: Photography: Louise Roche / Styling: Studio Haus Co)

Natural light always makes a room feel bigger than it is so try to maximise the light available in your small guest bedroom. You can do this by adding a mirror to the wall (which is also a necessary item for guest rooms don’t happen to be attached to bathrooms) and by making sure your window coverings are light. Adding a skylight to the room can also solve this problem for rooms that don’t receive much light.

Once you have your natural light sorted, it’s also important to add bedside lamps to your guest room. These don’t only make a midnight bathroom-trip more comfortable but also allow guests to stay up and read at their leisure.

4. Maximise storage options

In this bedroom, a chest of drawers acts as a bedside table and storage opportunity. Photographer: Sue Stubbs, Stylist: Bree Oliver

A small guest bedroom can quickly become overwhelmed by suitcases, clothing, shoes and the like. Make sure there’s a place for your guests to put it all. If you’re really short on space, you can opt for under-bed storage, roomy bedside drawers or embrace wall-mounted storage to maximise floor space. Multifunctional furniture, such as using a chest of drawers as a bedside table, can also solve this problem.

If there’s a built-in wardrobe, make sure it’s completely clear of clutter or, if you use it for storing bits and bobs, clear a generous section for your guests to use during their stay. Don’t forget to place spare coathangers in the wardrobe!

3. Fresh towels

Towels don’t travel well. Not only do they take up precious space in a suitcase, once damp, they need to be laundered pretty quickly before they begin to smell. Your guests will be so grateful that you have fresh towels that they can use during their stay. Make sure you give your guests ‘the good towels’ – aka the soft and fluffy bath towels, not the crunchy threadbare ones, and if they’re staying for more than a few days, offer to replace them regularly.

4. Toiletries

Forgetting something when travelling is almost inevitable. Usually it’s something small, but very important – like toothpaste, or a toothbrush! Placing a set of toothbrushes, toothpaste, spray deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, moisturiser, hair brush, hair dryer and tissues in the room will fill a forgetful traveller with gratitude.

5. Mod cons

In the days of old, getting into bed and switching off the light was pretty much the standard bedtime routine. These days, most people probably get into bed, plug their phone into the charger, scroll mindlessly for a few minutes (or hours – we’re not judging), before finally dozing off. Make it easy for your guests by placing a couple of multi-device chargers in the bedside drawer.

On the topic of devices, if you’ve ever had to ask to connect to somebody else’s home Wifi, you’ll know how awkward that conversation can feel. Eliminate the awkwardness by leaving a card with the name of your Wifi network and password in it on their bedside table. Your guests will appreciate it.

6. Nice to haves

A guest room with a reading nook.

Once all of the basics have been covered, feel free to prove your status as the ‘hostess with the mostest’ with additional (optional) creature comforts. If there’s enough space in the room, set up a tea and coffee station – perfect for guests who prefer not to interact before they’ve been caffeinated. Swap out a bedside table for a bar fridge that you can stock with snacks and drinks for your guests to enjoy at their leisure.

Creating a reading nook with a comfy armchair, books, lamp and a stack of magazines will also send the message that this room is a place your guests are welcome to retreat to any time they need privacy or simply just alone time.

Multi-purpose guest bedroom ideas

If you live in a small house or an apartment, dedicating an entire room to the sole purpose of welcoming guests may not be feasible. Here are some ideas for creating a storage room or home office that can quickly be transformed into a guest bedroom.

Ideas for a home office guest bedroom combination

In a small home office that needs to do double duty as a guest bedroom, selecting compact, multi-purpose furniture is key. Desks that can fold down into a bedside table are an excellent choice. Today’s sofa beds are so stylish and comfortable, your guests won’t even be able to tell they’re sleeping on a fold-out. Dedicate one drawer in the room to storing away electronic work devices like laptops, keyboard and mouse when guests are using the space.

A bouclé bed is the ultimate way to add cosy, chic vibes to your bedroom. If you’ve been following interior design trends over the last few years, you’ve probably noticed that bouclé is everywhere. From plush armchairs to sumptuous cushions, bouclé has become the fabric of choice for those who want to add a little texture and a lot of sophistication to their spaces.

But what exactly is bouclé? It’s actually a French word meaning “curly”, derived from boucler, which means “to curl”. It refers to a tightly woven fabric made from looped yarn, which gives it that signature soft, nubby texture.

Bouclé combines timeless elegance with unbeatable comfort. The warm, tactile feel helps achieve a more cosy bedroom. Bouclé doesn’t just sit pretty, it invites you to run your fingers over it. So, if you’re after a statement piece that combines comfort, style and a touch of effortless luxury, a bouclé bedhead is the upgrade your sleep space deserves. What’s French for Zzzzz?

Storage solutions that will stop kids’ toys taking over the house https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/bedroom-ideas/kids-bedrooms/kids-toy-storage/ Thu, 16 Jan 2025 06:18:18 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/clever-ways-to-keep-kids-rooms-clutter-free Storage is the key to keeping play zones fun and clutter-free.

The post Storage solutions that will stop kids’ toys taking over the house appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
One of the many unspoken roles you take on as a parent of young children is something I call ‘toy inventory manager.’ It basically involves overseeing (with wide-eyed horror) all of the toys coming into your storage-lacking home, keeping track of current stock and devising toy storage solutions to prevent it all from avalanching out of cupboards at any given moment. I’m told the role will eventually come to a natural close, culminating in the sigh of relief (and a few tears) as old, forgotten and outgrown toys are boxed up and marched out the door in search of a new loving home.

But if, like me, you’re in the thick of your ‘toys are everywhere’ era and haven’t been able to see the actual carpet beneath the carpet of toys that gobbled up your home some time ago, it could be time to brainstorm some kids’ toy storage ideas that will help you reclaim a sense of order. It can be an overwhelming task, but we’re here to help!

Whether you’re clawing back your living room or looking for playroom storage ideas that actually keep the room tidy, we’ve got you covered!

neutral-kids-bedroom-window-seat
Toys taking over your home? Here’s how to reclaim your space. (Photography: Ema Peter)

1. It doesn’t really matter if toys are everywhere

Let’s normalise toys being everywhere in a happy home filled with little rascals. This is a statement you may not see scrolling through social media, so I say it now in case you feel like your home isn’t up to scratch just because not every cupboard in your home is organised within an inch of its life.

To be frank, I ask myself daily whether waging a war against all of the toys in my home is even worth it. The truth of the matter is that your house is lived in and an oversupply of toys is a privileged problem to have. If you’re fine with toys being out and about, don’t change a thing! For some reason, I can’t relax when there are things all over the floor and the robotic vacuum mop I rely on to keep my floors tidy can’t handle lots of little obstacles – so these two factors are enough to motivate me to pick up stray toys where I can.

2. Part ways with outgrown items

The first step to getting kids’s toys to a manageable level is to say goodbye to items your kids no longer play with or that they’ve simply outgrown. Involve your kids in this process, if you can. Learning to let go of possessions is a valuable life lesson, but that it doesn’t make the task any easier, especially if your child is attached or unwilling to say goodbye.

Writing for The Conversation, psychology lecturers Shane Rogers and Natalie Gately of Edith Cowan University give the following tips for helping your child navigate the process:

  • Model the behaviour yourself by showing them how you part with your own possessions.
  • If a toy feels like their friend, encourage them to concentrate on other toys that are also special. Let them know that relationships can end, and that’s okay.
  • If a toy has sentimental value, remind them that the memories attached to that item will always stay with them.
  • If a child insists that they might need the item later, reassure them that you can always replace it if needed. But, it probably won’t happen.
How to help your child let go

If you’re wondering what to do with the toys you no longer need, consider donating them to charity or selling items in good condition on Facebook Marketplace.

3. Get a chuck-it bucket

Breathe a sigh of relief because the hard part is over. Now it’s time to create systems that help you stay on top of the toys worth keeping. Picture this: it’s the end of the day, you’ve battled the kids into bed and now it’s time to get yourself into bed … but wait, toys all over the living room is not the first thing you want to see in the morning. So what do you do? Arm yourself with a chuck-it bucket.

A chuck-it bucket can be a lightweight bucket, laundry hamper, woven basket or eve large canvas sack and the beauty of it is that all you need to do is grab it and start chucking any visible toys into it. It’s low-effort way to clear a room of toys quickly without having to muster up the energy to put everything back in its designated place. Devote one evening a week to putting all of the accumulated toys back where they belong, or, even better, delegate this job to the kids!

Toy storage baskets to shop

01

Loire round basket, Freedom

$71.95

If your child’s main play area also happens to be the living room, splurge on toy storage solutions that blend into your existing decor. A woven basket is a great option for traditional, coastal or Hamptons style homes, and this structured design from Freedom has two sturdy handles which make it great for tossing toys into at the end of the day.

Woven basket

02

Openook XL rope and water hyacinth basket with handle

$12, Big W

Woven baskets can cost a pretty penny so, if you’re on a budget, head over to Big W. This design is made from natural materials and has a wonderful contrast detailing around the base for added interest and is only $12! It’s a steal if you need to purchase multiple baskets to contain toy chaos across several rooms in the house.

4. Work with what you’ve got

Before rushing out to buy cult kids toy storage furniture unit (I’m talking about IKEA’s Kallax and Trofast units; if you know you know) see whether you can save cash by freeing up storage space in furniture pieces you already own.

This could involve donating the pile of DVDs taking up valuable real estate in the TV unit or stacking books slightly differently so you can turn one row of your bookshelf into a toy zone. Is there room under your sofa or under your child’s bed that could accommodate a slimline toy storage crate? Could you clear a shelf in a console or credenza for stashing away toys? Can you sacrifice one kitchen drawer for accommodating your child’s playthings?

Look for storage opportunities in unexpected places, too. Is there a corner of the garage you could use for keeping excess toys at bay? Is there a spot in the backyard you can set up a small store-out shed? If outdoor space is limited, a weather-proof outdoor storage box could also be a good option.

5. Toy storage furniture

If investing in toy storage furniture is a must, look for pieces that are easy for your child to open and close, have ample storage for both large and smaller items, can be reconfigured and repurposed as your child grows and suits the look and feel of your home. Multi-purpose toy storage furniture – think a desk with a hutch, or a table with hidden lego storage can also help prevent your home feeling cluttered.

Two of the most popular pieces of furniture in the kids toy storage category are IKEA’s Trofast and Kallax units – beloved worldwide for their affordability, customisability and versatility. But they’re not the only players!

6. Keep small toys together

Now it’s just a matter of keeping all of the little bits and bobs together and organised. Small storage baskets or stackable bamboo trays can help keep cupboards in order. Don’t limit yourself to the storage section when coming up with your plan of attack.

Clear makeup bags with zips, for example, are great for keeping smaller items like Lego, small dolls, dollhouse furniture, puzzle pieces and more organised yet visible when your kids go looking for them. Fishing tackle boxes can work as craft stations for beading projects, craft supplies, play makeup and Lego organisers (plus the handle is great for pulling them in and out of cupboards).

It’s great for toys like building blocks or magnetic tiles, because once your kids have finished with them, you simply pull on the rope and whoosh, everything is packed away and in a handy carry bag you can throw into the car or cupboard.

7. How to stay on top of toy clutter

Now that everything is in it’s place and you’ve showed all those toys who’s boss, it’s time to think about ways to slow the flow of toys that come into your home and maintain order.

Here are all the things I’m trying to implement:

  • Be purposeful with the toys you buy and encourage kids to record items they want on a wishlist that they can pull out for their birthday or Christmas.
  • Rather than buying new toys, consider hosting a ‘toy swap’ amongst close friends or family so items can be shared between cousins, friends and so forth.
  • Join a toy library and borrow toys, rather than buying them.
  • If you’re lucky enough to have really generous family and friends who make it their mission to spoil your kids, consider creating a gift registry using a platform like MyRegistry.com so they can clearly see exactly which items your child really wants and needs.
  • Set up a savings or investment account for your child and encourage family and friends to contribute to that rather than buying physical possessions.
  • Encourage your kids to take part in an annual toy declutter.

Do mattresses go on sale on Boxing Day?

Yes. Like most big-ticket items, it’s worthwhile to wait until Boxing Day sales to score a high-quality mattress at a fraction of the price. Boxing Day is similar in scale and popularity to Black Friday sales and is the last sale event before the new year. So, if you’ve missed out on scoring a new mattress during Black Friday mattress sales this year, this is your last chance to shop and save!

Every home needs a few beautiful basics that act as style foundations. Choosing the right bed linen that transcends trends, can be dressed up or down, and works with many moods can be tricky.

Sticking to white bed sheets is a fail-proof choice when finding bedding that works for most homes and bedrooms. However, there is always room for an elevated basic. Whether that’s by opting for a striped bed sheet rather than a plain one or choosing to go bold with fun graphic prints, choosing your bed linen for your bedroom is a personal journey – so it’s worth taking some time to choose one that suits your taste and needs.

Helpful bed linen tips:

  • Quality linen has natural thermal qualities keeping you cooler in summer and warmer in winter
  • Thread count can be confusing – the quality of the cotton used is more important than a high thread count
  • Hang freshly laundered linen in the sun to dry, then slip straight onto the bed for a relaxed, crumpled look
  • Allergy sufferers should wash bed linen in water heated to 55 degrees Celsius to kill dust mites effectively

Ready to refresh your bedroom? Below, we’ve curated a list of our favourite basic (and not-so-basic) bed linens that deserve a spot in your bedding collection year-round.

12 main bedroom ideas to make you swoon https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/bedroom-ideas/master-bedrooms/master-bedroom-ideas/ Mon, 09 Sep 2024 00:55:10 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/master-bedroom-ideas Whether your style is minimalist, maximalist, Hamptons or Scandi.

The post 12 main bedroom ideas to make you swoon appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Most rooms of a home are shared spaces, but the master bedroom? That one is (mostly) all yours. And if you think about it, you spend much of your life luxuriating in the main bedroom. However, the boudoir’s often not a top priority when designing a home or curating interiors.

It should be! From layout to decor, there are many wonderful ways to personalise your master bedroom so it suits your needs, is practical and gives you a serotonin hit every time you walk in.

Here are 12 master bedroom design ideas to help you be the master of your domain.

1. Create a cosy master bedroom nook

Sure, bedrooms are for sleeping, relaxing and, well, you know… But to really make the most of your master bedroom layout, carve out a nook for reading and contemplation. You don’t need a lot of space — just enough real estate for a plush chair, a side table and a piece of inspiring artwork.

2. Make your main bedroom dark and moody

There’s nowhere better suited to a slightly gothic interior than the master bedroom — opting for dark and rich colours, velvety bedlinen and mood lighting makes a bedroom feel like an enveloping hug and somewhere to retreat to. The master below focuses on a striking panelled feature wall, painted in Dulux Monument. “We chose it instead of a bedhead,” explains the owner and designer, Veronica, a.k.a. the ‘Builder’s Wife’.

3. Add a makeup station to your bedroom layout

Turn a corner or nook of your master suite into a makeup station or dressing table: a space that’s just for you. “I will sit down here to do my makeup and hair if I have a big event on,” says owner, Christal, interior and design consultant at Zou Build, of the space below. It can also boost the value of your home.

“In a luxury house at the higher end, it’s good to have these features for resale purposes. Personalise your master suite, but think about making the makeup station versatile; it could also be a study nook,” explains Christal. Keep the joinery tones timeless and neutral, she adds, and you can introduce colour through soft furnishings and artwork.

4. Look to nature for bedroom ideas

Make your master bedroom soothing and inviting by getting on the Australiana trend bandwagon. No, we’re not talking about hanging Ken Done paintings (as lovely as they are) or stuffed crocodiles, but evoking the colours, tones and textures of the Aussie landscape and sunset.

“It’s about bringing a slice of the Australian countryside home with you, even when you’re a city dweller,” explains Home Beautiful style forecast director, Fiona Gould. Think, a palette of dusky rose, sand, ochre and gum leaf-like green.

5. Create calm with minimalism

If you’re from the ‘less is more’ camp, then you’ll want a perfectly pared-back master bedroom, such as the one below, in the vein of minimalism and Scandinavian (or ‘Japandi’) design. The wall-to-wall oak timber bedhead by Intermain in American oak veneer spans more than five metres and is super functional.

“The bedhead houses electrical components to power the (Örsjö Belysning ‘Lean’) bedside lamps, USB chargers in the bedside tables and a recessed LED light along the top,” says owner, Nikki, an interior designer. Letting just the right amount of light in is the ‘Bottom Up’ honeycomb blinds by Veneta.

6. Add sumptuous details to your master bedroom

More of a maximalist? Then you’ll be needing details — lots of ’em. Layer your main bedroom with cosy cushions, draped curtains, tiers of bedlinen, an upholstered bedhead, a plush rug and bedroom decor that makes you smile. This is achievable if you’re renting, as well.

According to eBay, purchases of rent-friendly homewares are up, such as artificial plants (sales have increased by 280 per cent), removable mirrors (up 110 per cent) and Command strips for hanging art (up 65 per cent). Updating your bedding is an easy win.

“Replace your old pillows and quilts with thick plush inserts that will fill out bedlinen,” suggests stylist Nikki Hoskins. “And change the layout of your cushions. All of this will make you feel like you’ve got a completely new bed while only updating a couple of items.”

7. Think outside the box

The master bedroom doesn’t need to be in a bedroom. When it comes to creating your dream sanctuary, colour outside the lines! Nothing’s stopping you from setting up a sleep space in what’s typically a living room, attic or even a shed. That’s what the owners of this Spanish villa-inspired Byron Bay home, below, did.

They created a separate parents’ retreat by converting a shed that used to house trucks. The walls were insulated, lined and painted in fresh Ecolour Builder’s White and the oil-stained concrete floor was painted and softened with Turkish rugs.

8. Add a window seat or daybed to your bedroom

Nothing says laid-back luxury like a daybed. A banquette can hide storage underneath and you can update the upholstery when boredom strikes. The delightful daybed, below, features VJ panels for added character, nautical striped fabric and cushions from Coco Republic and Few & Far plus a Papaya linen throw.

9. Colour-drench your master bedroom

For a really enveloping space, strongly consider colour-drenching your bedroom (we dare you). According to Homes To Love, this new-ish trend involves making every surface of your room the same-ish colour: walls, window frames, ceilings, doors, soft furnishings and even decor items. It’s not for the faint of heart but it’s striking and can actually make your bedroom seem bigger because the lines in the space are ‘blurred’.

The mostly-blue master bedroom, below, in a home on the NSW South Coast was thoughtfully put together by interior designer Melinda Hartwright. While the walls are shrouded in Schumacher ‘Khilana Floral’ wallpaper in Peacock and the bedhead and lamp err towards blue, the ceiling and cornice are painted in a muted silvery green, Dulux Antarctica Lake Half. But an overall colour-drenched feel is certainly achieved.

10. Create wonder with wallpaper

The master bedroom is the ideal place the play with wallpaper. “If there is a chance to use wallpaper in any room, I will grab it,” says Melinda. “If you don’t want pattern, you can add glorious texture, interest and depth of colour.”

If using patterned wallpaper, opt for simple upholstery, plainer curtains and a smaller scale print or texture on the bedhead, advises Penny Sheehan, interior designer at Anna Spiro Design. “This is to not over-complicate the room and to let the wallpaper sing.” Penny isn’t a fan of feature walls, however.

“Always wallpaper all walls — feature walls cut up the room and can make it feel smaller and piecemeal,” she explains. “Wallpaper above and below picture rails for the same reason; it allows your eye to travel to the highest point of the room and makes the room feel larger.”

11. Make it a little bit country

Last year, Block host Shaynna Blaze embarked on the restoration of this 120-year-old cottage in Keyneton, in regional Victoria — the subject of a six-part series, Country Home Rescue. And the romantic master bedroom has all the decorative trimmings that make a country home feel snug: custom bee-inspired wallpaper, a vintage chandelier, furs, luxe bed linen, a rattan bedhead and an original fireplace.

12. Incorporate a headboard into your master bedroom

A built-in headboard serves a few functions: it adds another layer to your main bedroom layout, provides a spot for keeping books, vases, candles and other accoutrements close by, and it can accommodate electrical facilities for lights and power points. This nixes the need for bulky bedside tables and table lamps, which is great if your master bedroom is on the smaller side.

The problematic history of the term ‘master bedroom’ https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/bedroom-ideas/main-or-master-bedroom-history/ Sun, 01 Sep 2024 11:23:00 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1255464 Should we still be using the term?

The post The problematic history of the term ‘master bedroom’ appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
The debate over whether ‘master’ is an appropriate term for bedrooms and bathrooms is far from settled. In recent years, it’s largely fallen out of favour, with many opting for ‘main’ instead.

Still, old habits die hard. The word slipped back into use on The Block again this year – just as it did last year. In a 2024 episode, it even sparked an on-air discussion about whether we should be using ‘master bedroom’ at all.

The debate began when the judges were talking about one of the rooms during main ensuite week — and judge Marty Fox shared the importance of the room when it comes to a sale.

“With a master ensuite, this is a real money room,” he explained. “This is where buyers judge a house – the master ensuite.”

This prompted judge Shaynna Blaze to raise the issues that come with the term.

“We’re so used to saying ‘master ensuite’, but do you think that’s the right term to use in this day and age?” she asked. “No one’s the master of me, so this is the main bedroom ensuite.”

Shaynna isn’t the only one advocating for a different term. Many real estate agents and industry professionals have also leaned away from using the term to describe the main bedroom.

Here, we take a deep dive into the term’s problematic history and explain why people are starting to use ‘main’ instead of ‘master’.

The history behind the term ‘master’ bedroom

A pastel green main bedroom with a floral bedhead and vintage furniture.
The term ‘master bedroom’ feels outdated. (Credit: Photography: Brigid Arnott)

The term ‘master’ bedroom isn’t as old as you might expect, with the first recorded mention of a ‘master’s bedroom’ found in a 1926 Sears mail order catalogue in the United States. Before then, the word ‘chamber’ was used to describe bedrooms.

However, the word ‘master’ comes with its own problematic connotations. In almost all cases, ‘master’ is a male identity, and one that comes with power and privilege. Historically, the ‘master of the house’ ruled over the other members of the household — usually women, servants and in many cases, slaves as well.

They would have also occupied the home’s largest bedroom: the ‘master’s’ suite.

The master versus main debate

Considering the word’s history, it’s clear that the term comes with sexist, racist and classist connotations that many people are, understandably, uncomfortable with.

The movement away from the term began back in the 1990s. At the time, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development stated that the term ‘master bedroom’ was not discriminatory.

This, however, was not the end of the discussion around the word, which flared back up in the 2010s and with the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. In 2020, The Houston Association of Realtors became the first U.S. industry group to stop using the term, choosing to use the label ‘primary bedroom’ instead.

Many other industry groups have since followed suit — in the States as well as in the UK and here in Australia.

So, is it ‘main’ or ‘master’?

Different people may have their own preferences, but as a whole, the industry seems to be shifting away from the word ‘master’. In Australia, it has definitely become more common to use the term ‘main bedroom’ and ‘main bathroom’.

The movement has also opened up questions about the use of other interior terms, such as ‘his and hers’, which aren’t exactly inclusive of LGBTQIA+ couples.

And while it might just feel like semantics, it’s worth considering that our language carries weight and that words really can create change.

Beat the chill with a duck-down duvet on cold winter nights https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/bedroom-ideas/bedding/best-duck-down-duvet/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 06:39:55 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/best-duck-down-duvet Cosy up and under these duck-down duvets.

The post Beat the chill with a duck-down duvet on cold winter nights appeared first on Home Beautiful.

Duvets, also known as doonas or quilts, are one of the biggest investments you can make in your bedlinen to ensure total cosiness at night, even in the middle of winter. When looking for options for a duck-down duvet, one question that lingers is: what is duck-down? And, more importantly, how is it made? Duck-down, known for its superior insulating properties, is often found in winter essentials such as puffer jackets or a cosy duvet. And, contrary to popular opinion, down and feathers are actually different. A duvet made of duck feathers will feature plumage, from the fluffy part of the feather to the hard quill. Meanwhile duck-down is the softer undercoating of these birds. Duck-down is comprised of fluffy filaments, growing out from a central quill point. As such, duck-down duvets are superior in terms of insulation and provide more warmth than feather duvets.

Is duck-down ethical?

The question on everyone’s lips: is duck-down ethical? Or further, is ethical duck-down available? In short, yes, ethical duck-down is available, and eiderdown takes the crown in this regard. Sourced from the Eider species of duck, eiderdown is hand-collected from nests. This collection of down feathers that have already fallen off a duck is the most ethically sourced from an animal welfare point of view. However, due to its labour-intensive process, duvets filled with eiderdown are expensive and hard to come by.

The good thing is, even a small percentage of duck down will improve the insulation of your duvet. Many duvet fillings are made from a blend of duck-down and duck feathers. The higher the percentage of feathers, the more budget-friendly the blanket is likely to be. Meanwhile, the higher the percentage of duck-down, the warmer (and often more expensive) the result.

Real Talk: Olympian Libby Trickett spills the tea on home life https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/home-ideas/libby-trickett-home-target/ Fri, 26 Jul 2024 04:08:11 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/?p=1253103 The 4 x Olympic gold medallist and Mum of 4 shares her favourite home hacks.

The post Real Talk: Olympian Libby Trickett spills the tea on home life appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
As all eyes turn to the coming Paris Olympics and we prepare to tune in to watch our nation’s finest athletes on the world stage, Olympic gold medallist swimmer Libby Trickett opens her home to Home Beautiful. She shares her tricks to fuss-free, family friendly styling.

It has been 12 years since Libby retired from swimming – she scooped gold medals at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympic games. Her style is rich in heritage and is quintessentially Australian, and she even co-designed the Olympic uniforms with Sportscraft for her last Olympic stint.

Four young children now bring their unique, adorable chaos to Libby’s home life, and she says she loves finding durable homewares and decor that work with her pared-back style. “We don’t want to feel anxious about expensive items breaking or if my four-year-old decides to draw on everything,” she says.

The family home was built 12 years ago, and with young kids running around and “continually dropping things on the floor”, she is looking forward to freshening up the inside and creating a new blank canvas. “The walls have seen better days,” she says.

Libby Trickett swears by a mix-and-match approach to homewares for a luxe look.

Libby loves to mix luxe items with affordable options when styling her home. “It also means I can trial different colours and textures to see what works best in our space.” She often scours the homewares range at Target, utilising their in-season pieces in a neutral colour palette. Here are Libby’s top tips to styling a home that is as beautiful as it is durable.

1. Give only key rooms your focus when hosting

There’s nothing like a panic clean to get the house in order when you’re expecting guests, but a complete overhaul can also be a stressful and time consuming process. Libby keeps things real (and her sanity!) with a “sneaky hack” before guests arrive. Focus only on the rooms that are visible to guests, she says, giving them a general tidy and wiping down surfaces. “My advice is to also recognise that homes are for living and to be lived in, so you don’t have to put all of your toys and belongings away to make your house look presentable for guests. I generally focus on the areas I know that we’ll spend the most time.”

2. Use this hot tip for seamless, sexy entertaining

Libby jokes that she feels “a long way from seamless and sexy at this point in my life”. But her hot tip to get close is setting the table with matching plates and cutlery when she’s hosting. It’s a hack she says “really elevates the space and makes me feel like an adult”.

3. Put ‘judgy’ social media away

Anyone familiar with the power of doom scrolling knows that the stunning and perfect interiors on Instagram are – on most days – a world away from real life. Yours is not a show home, Libby reminds us, and she says she has learned to let go of expectations and judgement. “I think we all get caught up in what our homes should look like and whether or not it’s instagrammable,” she says. “We’re constantly on social media seeing all of these beautiful houses showcasing the way people seemingly live … Most of us don’t live like that 100 percent of the time”. While Libby loves having a beautiful home and nice things, she believes friends and family should understand that real houses get messy, particularly with a young family.”

4. Keep it real (and beautiful) with art

Libby’s home has walls filled with photos of her family and friends, a style tip she feels makes it feel like a daily home. “I’ve also discovered the joy in artwork to help elevate a space. While artwork can be expensive, it doesn’t have to be and it makes a home feel super warm and inviting. It’s also a beautiful way to express yourself in a creative way,” she says.

5. Mix luxe with budget designs

Libby loves finding durable decor and furnishings for her home, and she says she is always on the lookout for functional pieces that will withstand the family’s lifestyle. Her go-to style tip when decorating is to mix luxe items with affordable options, she says. “I love to mix and match products as this makes styling so much easier and more affordable.”

Updating a bed for the cooler months often starts with switching out summer linen for a heavy winter quilt and fuzzy flannelette sheets, but one bedding component that often gets overlooked is the quilt cover itself.

Investing in a warm quilt cover for winter in a rich hue will not only create a moody, wintry ambience, it’s also super important if you’re a bedding renegade who prefers to sleep without a cumbersome top sheet. Because the quilt is directly in contact with your body, it’s important to select a cover in a material that feels soft and cuddly without making you feel stuffy and overheated.

A warm quilt cover in a material like jersey cotton, flannelette, cotton velvet, chenille or even corduroy will boost the weight and insulating properties of an existing doona. When buying a warm quilt cover, it’s always a good idea to opt for 100% natural fibres such as cotton, linen or Tencel, where possible, to ensure your bedding feels cosy yet entirely breathable.

While summer bedding is often light, white and airy, it’s an unspoken rule that winter bedding can be a bit more daring in terms of colour palette, pattern, fabric and texture. Tartan, checks, prints and waffle weaves are all welcome at this time of year for creating a layered bed that feels plush and inviting.

Literally meaning ‘long chair’ in French, modern iterations of the chaise lounge generally come as either a sofa extension (creating the perennially popular L shape), or as a standalone one-person lounge. Either way, the appeal of a chaise lounge is undeniably the way it encourages the user to recline, making relaxation imperative rather than optional. While the freestanding chaise conjures the idea of idle relaxation, the L shape lounge cocoons households, availing them of face-to-face interaction as a by-product of the inward-facing arrangement. In a pinch, a chaise can also double as a guest bed for short-term visitors.

A worthy addition that’s sure to make your living room the cosiest room in your home, a chaise lounge is as much an aesthetic investment as it is a practical addition. However, we understand navigating the myriad of colour, fabric and shape options available, both instore and online, can be overwhelming. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. The Home Beautiful team has handpicked the best of the best when it comes to chaise lounges. Keep reading to discover the pros and cons of this living room staple.

Do you look at a beautifully styled bed on Pinterest or Instagram and wonder how it’s done? It seems so simple, but making a bed is almost an art – especially if you want it to look straight from the pages of a magazine.

Enter Jordan Prainito, managing director of soft furnishing company Canningvale and Phoebe Bell, owner and director of Sage x Clare as they take us step by step, pillow by pillow, through styling a luxurious bed you’ll never want to stop looking at.

1. The foundation: sheets

“Starting with good quality sheets, I like to choose linen in a colour that works with the rest of the look,” says Phoebe. “It doesn’t need to look deliberately matched, but sheets in a neutral or a soft colour often work well and will give your bed a great foundation without being the main player.”

Jordan agrees and says, when styling a bed, it’s important to ensure the top sheet is actually facing the right way up. “If you use a flat sheet a little higher up the bed and the wrong side up (that is, with the brand tag facing the mattress) you’ll have plenty of room at the top to fold it over the quilt cover,” he explains.

2. Add height with softness

Even if you have a bedhead, it’s always a good idea to add height with pillows as these will frame the rest of your styling. Opt for two European square pillows. with a featured pattern or texture cover that matches your quilt cover. Stylist’s tip? Use the “hand chop” to create an indent in the top for added style. “I think it’s a bit of fun,” says Jordan.

3. Style your bed with plush pillows

For a classic ‘luxury hotel’ look, Jordan recommends placing standard pillows in front of European cushions and selecting pillowcases with a five-centimetre sham (a fabric border) on them. “I think it gives a little more of a styled, opulent look rather than just plain pillowcases,” he says.

For a consistent look, he suggests matching the standard pillowcases with the flat and fitted sheets. If you have a queen or king-sized bed you can also add another set of standard pillows for even more luxury. For these, Jordan recommends using pillowcases that are the same pattern or colour as the quilt.

4. Playful pattern and colour

More of a clashing colours and patterns type of person? Try Phoebe’s advice instead. “Gone are the days when bedlinen must be in a set.- we now have lots more freedom around mixing and matching, which is also a really easy and affordable way to mix up the look of your bedroom,” she says.

“At Sage x Clare, we tend to choose four individual pillowcases with a common thread across the colour palette. If you have patterned pillows, make sure you have them in a variety of print scales – this is the secret to pattern-on-pattern looking curated rather than a mish-mash.

“Depending on your style, you may like to choose a plain or patterned quilt cover that ties in with one or two of your pillowcases. Again, your colour palette is really important here as it will bring the look together.”

5. Blanket bliss

‘Beds always look more finished with either a blanket or bedcover draped across the end,” says Phoebe. “This will break up the expanse of bed and keep it feeling layered. When considering a blanket or bedcover, keep the t exture at the forefront of your mind.”

Want a chunkier look? “Fold your quilt cover in thirds at the foot of the bed,” says Jordan. “Then, in between the top of the bed and where the quilt cover is placed, you can introduce a new texture or colour, such as a throw. It’s a really nice way to get that three complementary layers that make a bed look stunning and opulent.”

6. Comfy cushions

Cushions are surprisingly contentious – you either love them or hate them. “We always get asked how many cushions are too many!” says Phoebe. “There’s no right or wrong answer here but we do love a cushion or four. Two large Euro size cushions in block colours to place behind your standard pillows and a couple of smaller textural cushions at the front will certainly complete the look.”

Mitch and Mark create ace bedroom with Big W’s new kids’ collection https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/bedroom-ideas/big-w-kids-collection/ Mon, 15 Apr 2024 04:41:21 +0000 https://www.homebeautiful.com.au/big-w-kids-collection Plus tips to create a room that's stylish and sparks imagination.

The post Mitch and Mark create ace bedroom with Big W’s new kids’ collection appeared first on Home Beautiful.

Ever since they debuted on the 2019 season of The Block, Mitch and Mark, aka Australia’s most stylish grandads, have been sharing their brand of contagious fun and zest for life through home renovations and colourful, vibrant decor. But their latest challenge – styling up a kids’ room using only products from Big W’s new homewares range – is perhaps their funnest yet. “Ask us grandads to create a playroom to delight kids – we are all over it!”

As you’d expect, the final result completely bucks the all-neutral trend, instead combining playful plaids with dinosaur-print sheets and plush cushions with a menagerie of stuffed animals. “Who can go past a snuggly, plush elephant?” says Mitch.

“Our Big W kids play area is exactly about that, lot’s of zones and areas for kids to play, have fun and learn about the world,” says Mark. “Seeing it all come together made us eager to invite the grandkids over to dive in and explore every corner!”

Here, Mitch and Mark share 5 tips for styling a bedroom that will spark imaginations, stay relatively tidy and won’t cost a bomb to recreate.

1. Mix and match

If you’re a design-savvy parent, you’ll know how difficult it can be to create a bedroom your kids love but that feels in keeping with the rest of your home. Dinosaur sheets may not be your first pick, but for a Jurassic Park-obsessed child, they can mean the world. It may be tempting to style busy sheets with something plain, but Mitch takes an entirely different tack – adding even more pattern to the mix. “Geometrics make [the bed] not only fun, but a little bit stylish,” says Mitch. The key to successfully clashing patterns is to select fabrics in similar colours.

2. Stylish storage

Keeping kids’ rooms tidy is a never-ending battle, which is why incorporating toy storage into the design from the get-go is so important. “To pack away the kids’ toys we’ve added the Opennook rope baskets and storage cubes,” says Mitch. “They’re practical and very attractive.”

Bookshelves, cube storage and woven baskets are all ways to keep toys contained when they’re not in use.

3. Let there be light

One of the most overlooked elements when styling a kids’ room is the lighting. Including a variety of lights can help support your child’s bedtime routine. A friendly night-light can keep monsters at bay, while dimmable lamps can help signal to your child that it’s time to wind down for the night. “Lighting is important and we’ve added a touch of fun with amazing night lights,” says Mark.

4. Create zones

The key to creating a bedroom your kids will really love is to divide it into distinct zones. Of course the primary zone will be for sleeping, but an otherwise empty corner can be transformed into a reading nook with little more than a comfy beanbag, a bookshelf and a reading lamp. “We’re loving the beanbag in the floral print,” says Mitch.

It’s also a great idea to keep the centre of the room clear so there’s plenty of space to spread out and play. A child-sized table and chairs is multi-purpose and can be great for colouring in or hosting tea parties.

5. Shop beyond the kids’ section

Finally, think about how the room will evolve as your child grows. Even though Mitch and Mark have packed the room with soft toys, they’re supported by a collection of versatile throw cushions sourced from Big W’s main homewares range. “We’ve used more sophisticated cushions with the soft toys,” says Mark.

So next time you’re shopping for decor to makeover your child’s room, step outside the kids’ section and look for basic foundational elements that will provide a stylish backdrop for many years to come.

The post How to decorate with Hamptons style appeared first on Home Beautiful.

]]>
Hamptons-style decorating has taken Australian home interiors by storm. We know why – the fresh, airy palette of white-washed linens, natural textures, ocean-inspired blues and freshly painted white timber finishes work beautifully in Australian homes.

The look is inspired by the architecture and decorating of holiday homes in the luxury seaside communities of upstate New York’s neighbouring Long Island. The interior decorating style along the eastern beachside buildings brings forth a relaxed coastal atmosphere with generous proportions of sofas for reclining, substantial island benches for gathering and entertaining, and crisp blue-striped awnings over pools and outdoor entertaining areas.

Essentially, the fundamental element to Hamptons style is white, white and more white. Build on this with other key decorative elements and accent with touches of colour and texture where it counts. Here’s how to embrace Hamptons style and get the look in your own home.

Our favourite Hamptons homewares

The base

The Hamptons decorating palette is based on a crisp white paint colour choice in a low sheen finish. It is at once modern and classic, cool and welcoming. Try Dulux Natural White or White on White to achieve the look.

Window coverings are sparse and expansive areas of glass are essential, edged in semi-gloss painted timbers or clean aluminium frames or dressed with plantation shutters. Cross-ventilation and picture-perfect outdoor vistas come with bay windows, banks of louvred glass or oversized French doors to swing open and invite breezes.

Choose all-white finishes for kitchen cabinetry with featured areas of open shelving or glass-paned doors. Keep to marble, light-coloured engineered stone or crisp white laminates for benchtops and stools drawn up to the island bench are a must. Pendant lights are the mainstay of Hamptons-style in the kitchen – go for lantern styles in metal and glass, or shiny chrome showstoppers.

The layers

The ideal flooring choice for the Hamptons look inside your home is to go for timber floorboards. Pale timbers with grey undertones, pure white and painted or with a white-washed, distressed look are typical choices that give the air of effortless coastal style and easy living.

Layer with rugs in natural jute and sisal fibres or woven with natural cotton and bleached wool textures. Washed-out blues also work beautifully on timber floors. If carpet suits your lifestyle, look to natural tones and simple textures that evoke sandy shores and driftwood.

The furnishings

When it comes to furnishing a Hamptons-style home, generosity is key here. Think relaxed luxury resorts with deep, overstuffed sofas covered in washable white or linen slipcovers or upholstered in pale neutrals with ticking stripes.

Sideboards and side tables in natural- or white-painted timbers add an extra dimension to your Hamptons room, as do occasional tray tables and cane or rattan armchairs with plump upholstered cushions with piping edges.

The styling

Cushions piled on top are a must in Hamptons-style decorating and this is where you can add a little colour – china blues, chintz and Chinoiserie, ocean-inspired motifs are all evocative. Texture can play a part also with beautiful quality linens, jute edges or piping in complimentary tones. Create decorative vignettes around your living spaces, bathroom vanity and kitchen benchtops.

Table tops are a great place to introduce task lighting with plain linen shades atop stone and glass-based lamps, china bowls and coffee table books.

Look to a colour palette of blue and white china with touches of driftwood and bleached coral; vases and glassware bring in a little glamour in the colours of seaglass. Throughout your home styling, opt for ceramics in blue and white, patterns of light florals, geometric lattice and lace patterns.
