Why Are There No Floats in a St. Patrick’s Day Parade?

St. Patrick’s Day parades are more of a march, than a parade with floats. The reason why, is that from about 1845 – 1852 approximately 1 million Irish came to live in the United States, due to a potato famine in Ireland. To show the U.S. that they were here to stay, the Irish banded together marched up the main avenue in New York City! So, when you attend a St. Patrick’s Day parade, in cities across the U.S., you can expect that everyone marches! There are few to no floats. Traditional Irish bands and dancers fill the streets with music and dancing. Finally, families of Irish descent, march with their clan.

So, celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by listening to “There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Clover” read aloud by Story Time with Amber and Erin.

History of St. Patrick’s Day Food

Did you know that a traditional Irish meal of corn beef and cabbage isn’t really traditional? It actually is an Irish-American meal. From 1845 – 1852 there was a potato famine in Ireland that brought approximately 1 million Irish to the United States. Corned beef was the cheapest meat, that Irish living on the east coast of the U.S., and specifically, in New York City, could buy. They paired the corned beef with cabbage, one of the cheapest vegetables, to purchase.

If dining in Ireland today, we could expect the traditional dish of boiled bacon and potatoes, or a potato, onion, and lamb stew.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we invite you to listen to “Jamie O’Rourke and the Big Potato” read aloud by Story Time with Amber and Erin.
