You Can Do It!

There are a lot exciting things about the end of the school year. There are celebrations and field days. However, there can also be some stressful and scary things, like tests and presentations. Did you know that we are also constantly trying new things. It can feel stressful and scary to us too. Amber has spent the school year taking a class to improve her confidence and ability to clearly speak and read ‘out loud.’ She said that it was scary. She’s looking to learn something new and to improve, not to be perfect. Take a look at one of her year-end projects. We want you to say congratulations on completing another year. Have a great day! – Amber and Erin : )

Mother’s Day is Just Five (5) Days Away! <3

Mother’s Day is 5 days away. How are you planning on showing your mom how thankful you are to her? How about a handwritten note? Flowers cut from the yard? How about her favorite dessert? These are just a few ideas. We were having fun the day we recorded “Maple.” Let us know if you notice anything changing as you watch us read this story. When Maple was a brand new baby, her parents planted a brand new Maple tree in her honor. Even though a Maple tree is not the perfect playmate, it was for Maple. They were the best of friends. Maple tree did not mind when Maple was too loud. When winter arrived, Maple shared her coat with Maple Tree. Unfortunately, Maple Tree could catch snow balls or play tag. So, the Maple Tree was not ideal for all games. Maple’s parents had a big surprise for her. Maple had a big surprise for Maple Tree. Please remember, to like, comment and subscribe to our channel. How are these teaching practices benefiting children? By Erin Hendrix

“Today’s child has become the unwilling, unintended victim of overwhelming stress-the stress borne of rapid, bewildering social change and constantly rising expectations.” –David Elkind

Our children are under immense pressure to perform, both Will Picture Sego Lilybehaviorally and academically, beyond their physical years in age. As a parent and educator, I feel outraged by these developmentally inappropriate standards and have chosen to not subject my children and students to them. Not only do today’s developmentally inappropriate standards make our children miserable and cause unnecessary stress on our teachers and caregivers, they have yet to prove how they are benefiting any of our children. Yet, we have policy makers, enough teachers, and caregivers buckling under the pressure and buying into the false idea that “earlier is better”. Frankly, I am getting tired of reading about  those happy, illiterate children of Finland whose parents
image
and teachers confidently dare to allow their children and students more time in the day to play without fear of society judging for not pushing them to be little early readers and number crunchers. I want the rest of the world to start reading about the happy, illiterate children of the United States of America.

Ireland: Creative Movement for Any Learning Space

Creative Movement is a fun way to get your students out of their chairs to explore concepts and the elements of time, space, and energy through natural body movements. Creative Movement activities help to refine gross motor skills and facilitate the exploration of movement and musical elements. In a classroom setting, Creative Movement works best as a quiet activity

Creative Movement Idea: Focus on the theme of Ireland and pose the following creative movement questions for your students to answer with their bodies.

Movement Questions: Students are posed a series of questions and are encouraged to move their bodies in ways that express their answers to the questions you pose. This type of creative movement approach encourages students to think for themselves, connect the mind and body, move in ways that feel appropriate to their bodies, and engages the students in creative thinking.

Teacher Tip: As the children are moving their bodies to answer your creative movement questions, talk about how you see them moving their bodies. Example: I see Robbie is crouching low and moving in a sneaky way to hide his pot of gold. I see Cheri is moving her feet quickly and doing an Irish jig.

Question 1: If you were a leprechaun, how would you move? Move your body like a leprechaun for 32 counts.

Question 2: If you were a four-leaf clover, how would you move? Will you start off as a seed and sprout? Will you pretend to be picked from the clover patch? Move your body like you are a four-leaf clover for 32 counts.

Question 3: If you were storm clouds, how would you move? Move your body like a storm cloud for 32 counts.

Question 4If you were raindrops, falling from a storm cloud, how would you move? Move your body like raindrops for 32 counts.

How to Implement Process-Oriented Art to Promote Self-Confidence in Your Child by Erin Hendrix

It is commonly expressed, among parents, that what they want most for their children is to grow up with a positive sense of self, along with an abundance of self-confidence. Parents have a profound impact on their children’s self-confidence throughout their daily exchange of interactions. Self-confidence is the belief an individual has in his own abilities. Parents who consciously choose to send their children positive messages through uplifting language and unconditional love can help their children to form a positive sense of self, along with self-confidence. One fun activity, that easily facilitates the use of uplifting language and unconditional love, is an activity called process-oriented art.

Process-oriented art focuses on the process of discovery, not the final aesthetics of the project. It is one of those special activities that facilitates endless possibilities and can bring a lot of joy into children’s lives. No matter the outcome of the art, parents can praise their children for what their artwork is, not what it isn’t. Continue reading

Who Stole the Gold From the Leprechaun? Community Circle – Irish Folktale

Have your students sit in a circle and show them the talking stick. The talking stick can be any object safe to pass around the circle that does not make any noise. When anybody is holding the talking stick, it indicates that it is their turn to talk and everybody else’s turn to listen. Every Community Circle can have a different focus and it can be short or long, depending on what experience you want your students to have on any given day.

Community Circle Idea: Focus on the theme of Irish Folklore and pose the following question for your students to answer during Community Circle. It is an effective way to create a sense of community among your students by taking the time to start the day, in a circle formation, where everybody’s presence is acknowledged and welcomed. Extend the lesson and listen to the read aloud “Too Many Leprechauns.”

My Students DON’T Like to Read!!!

Happy Thanksgiving week friends. Lately I’ve been asking each of my students what they enjoy doing. I learned something surprising about most of my students. My students say that they DON’T LIKE TO READ! This surprised. So, this week as you leave your schools for your Thanksgiving holiday, pick one of our books and listen to it. Listen to it as your driving to your grandparents’ home, as you’re sitting in the airport, or as you sit in your pj’s wrapped in a blanket at home. Just listen and enjoy! Nothing more. And, when you finish one choose another to listen to. Listen and enjoy all holiday long. Safe travels and have a great Monday! You can also find us at: Facebook, InstagramPinterest, and TwitterWe are two sisters on a mission to make a difference by spreading fun and engaging literacy experiences across the globe. Animals begin to hibernate as a storm arrives today!

Yesterday while exploring Liberty Park in Salt Lake City, Utah, we found files of pinecones at the base of most trees. I learned that squirrels have been busy gathering food for the approaching winter. I awoke early this morning to an approaching storm which I’m sure will motivate most animals living in this area to begin hibernating. How About Reading a Good Book During Fall Break?

Fall Break! How you spending your time? One teacher wrote yesterday that she’s spending her two days off swimming, with family, cleaning the house, and reading a good book. I think it’s interesting that most of us find time to read an enjoyable book only on vacation and holidays, and not during our normal day-to-day routine. What would happen to our literacy rates if we changed this norm? Let’s Go Digital: Developing Learning for Today’s Child!

It is possible to use technology to inspire interest in literature in our children, tweens and teens. Our mission is to make a difference by spreading fun and engaging literacy experiences across the globe, via the digital world, as evidenced by our literature Youtube channel, Story Time with Amber and Erin. As we enter our second year on this project, we are incorporating some of the basics. Shakespeare’s works has had a huge influence on the creation and evolution of the English language. In addition, for centuries nursery rhymes have served the purpose of telling history, and now is considered the foundation of prereading for children. As are some other educators, we are meshing the two to give learning a different look and experience for today’s children. Thanks for tuning in and please remember to subscribe to our channel on Youtube.
